FAFSA status stuck on 'In Review' - can't access parent signature section before deadline
I'm totally panicking right now. My daughter completed her part of the FAFSA yesterday and submitted it, but now when I try to log in to complete the parent section, it shows 'In Review' status and I can't access anything to sign! We have a January 15th deadline for her dream school (which is FOUR DAYS away!!), and everything online just says it takes '1-3 days to process' before we can edit or add signatures. Did we mess up the order? Was I supposed to sign something before she submitted her part? She clicks through everything so fast I couldn't keep track of what she was doing. Has anyone dealt with this before? Will we miss the deadline? I'm so stressed about this whole process.

Deep breath! This is actually normal. When the student submits their section first, the FAFSA does go into a processing state that can last 1-3 days before the parent can access and complete their signature section. The good news is that schools generally consider the FAFSA "submitted" based on the student's initial submission date, not when all signatures are complete. So as long as your daughter submitted her part before the January 15th deadline, you should be fine even if your signature comes a day or two later.

•Thank you for responding! That's a huge relief. I just wish they made this clearer in the instructions. So you're saying the school will see that she submitted on time even if my signature isn't completed until after the deadline? Is there anything I should do in the meantime? Should I contact her school's financial aid office?

•Really? I wish I'd known that was the better way to do it! Did you find instructions somewhere that said parents should submit first? I couldn't find clear guidance anywhere about the right order.

This exact thing happened to us! My son submitted his section and then it locked me out for almost 48 hours. I called the Federal Student Aid number like 15 times and could never get through - kept getting disconnected or was on hold forever. I finally just had to wait it out, and eventually I got an email saying I could go in and complete my section. We missed his school's priority deadline by a day, but they still counted it as on time when I explained what happened.

•Oh no, 48 hours?! That's cutting it WAY too close for us. Did you try anything to speed up the process? I'm already imagining all the phone calls I'll have to make to explain this situation.

The system is definitely confusing. For what it's worth, when I called my daughter's school about this exact issue last year, they said they consider the FAFSA submitted based on the student submission date, not the parent signature date. But definitely follow up with your specific school to confirm their policy.

•That's reassuring. I'll definitely call her school tomorrow to make sure they handle it the same way. This process is so stressful!

This seems to be a design flaw in the new FAFSA. What's happening is that after student submission, the system has to calculate preliminary eligibility before allowing parent contribution. The technical term is that the SAI (Student Aid Index) calculation needs a preliminary run before parent data can be integrated. If you're desperate to reach Federal Student Aid quickly, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they helped me get through when I was dealing with a similar processing issue. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. They basically hold your place in line so you don't have to stay on hold for hours.

•Claimyr was a lifesaver for me too! After trying for days to get through to FSA, I used them and spoke to someone within 20 minutes. The agent was able to tell me exactly when I'd be able to access my parent section.

•Thank you for this suggestion! I might try that if I don't see any movement in the next day. Has anyone had FSA speed up the processing time by calling them?

My daughters school actually told us its fine as long as the student portion is submitted by the deadline. They know about the processing delay thing. I wouldn't worry too much but maybe email the financial aid office just to be safe?

•That's a good idea. I'll email them right now just to document that we're aware of the issue and trying to resolve it. Thanks!

UPDATE: After 2 days, I finally got the email that I could complete my parent section. Finished my signature and now we're all set. Thanks everyone for the reassurance!

•That's great news! I'm hoping ours gets processed just as quickly. Did you do anything to speed it up or just wait?

For anyone in this situation in the future: I learned from an aid advisor that the reason this happens is because the new FAFSA system needs to run the student's information through the income verification process with IRS data before they open up the parent contribution section. The delay is built into the system design. Just an explanation for why it works this way - doesn't make it less frustrating!

•Thanks for explaining that! I wish they would just tell us these things upfront instead of making us panic.

In my experience, the deadline refers to when the student submits - not when all signatures are complete. My son's college explicitly told us this. The parent signature can come a few days later without affecting your place in line for financial aid. The school cares about when you initiated the FAFSA, not when every last step was completed.

•Thank you! I've emailed her school just to be safe, but this makes me feel much better about the situation.
