FAFSA says processed with negative SAI (-1500) but schools not receiving it - what next?

Hey everyone, I'm seriously confused about our FAFSA status. My daughter and I started our applications back in January - I created my FSA ID first, then she made hers. We've both submitted everything, both accounts show as 'processed' and we even received an SAI number of -1500. But we keep getting these mysterious 'signature' emails even though we've signed everything multiple times! Does a processed status with an SAI mean our FAFSA is actually complete and should be going to schools automatically? We've reached out to several colleges on her list but they say they haven't received anything. I've called FSA like 20 times but can't get through to a human being. Anyone know what's going on or what we should do next? This is driving us crazy!

A negative SAI is actually good news! It means your daughter will likely qualify for maximum aid. But regarding your signature issue - have you checked both your FSA account AND your daughter's to make sure both show completed signatures? Sometimes parents complete their signature but the student hasn't completed theirs (or vice versa). Also, did you both use your separate FSA IDs and passwords when signing?

Thanks for responding! Yes, we both definitely signed with our separate FSA IDs and passwords. I've checked both accounts repeatedly and they both show 'processed.' That's why I'm so confused about these signature emails. They don't specify WHAT needs to be signed! And if we have an SAI number, doesn't that mean everything is done? Why would schools not be receiving it?

My son had this EXACT same problem last month. The FAFSA system is a complete nightmare this year with all the changes. Those signature emails are probably system glitches. If you got an SAI number, your application is technically complete, but there could be a data transmission problem to the schools.

Ugh, what a mess! Did your son's eventually go through to his schools? How long did it take? We're getting close to decision deadlines and I'm starting to panic 😰

Good point! I'll go back through all our email folders including spam. Maybe we missed something important in one of those signature emails. Thanks for the suggestion!

This is a common issue with the new FAFSA system. Here's what you need to do: 1. First, log into studentaid.gov and go to the "My FAFSA" section to check the exact status. Look for any yellow warning symbols or messages. 2. Verify that both you AND your daughter have completed all signature requirements. The system requires separate electronic signatures from both the parent and student. 3. Confirm that your daughter has listed all the school codes correctly. Sometimes schools don't receive the FAFSA because they weren't properly added to the school list. 4. For the schools that say they haven't received anything, ask them specifically to check for your daughter's FAFSA by her name and social security number. Sometimes there are delays in matching records in their systems. 5. If you've verified all of the above and still have issues, you'll need to speak with a Federal Student Aid representative directly. Keep trying the phone line at different times of day.

Thank you so much for these detailed steps! We've done steps 1-3 multiple times but I'll have my daughter double check all school codes again. For step 4, several schools have checked using her SSN and still say nothing's there. It's step 5 that's killing us - we CANNOT get through on the phone no matter what time we call. Is there any other way to contact a real person at Federal Student Aid?

I'm dealing with similar FAFSA nightmare right now... those signature emails are so frustrating because they don't tell you WHAT needs signing! My daughter's college financial aid office told us this year's FAFSA is a complete disaster and they're seeing tons of transmission errors. Have you tried asking one of the schools to manually download your FAFSA data? Apparently some schools can do that if you request it.

I didn't know schools could manually download FAFSA data! That's a great idea - I'll definitely ask about that. This whole process is so much more complicated than it should be. I'm sorry you're dealing with the same nightmare 😓

If you have an SAI number, your FAFSA is technically complete, but there could be a data transmission issue preventing schools from receiving it. The signature emails are a known glitch in the system this year - many families receive them even after everything is properly signed. To solve your issue: 1. Print screenshots of both your and your daughter's processed status with the SAI number 2. Email these screenshots directly to each school's financial aid office, including your daughter's full name and student ID number if she has one 3. To reach an actual human at Federal Student Aid, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They help you skip the phone queue and get through to an agent quickly. I was on hold for hours until I tried their service. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ showing how it works. The agent I spoke with was able to manually verify that my son's FAFSA was complete and properly submitted to schools. 4. Ask the Federal Student Aid agent to specifically check the data transmission status to your daughter's schools. Sometimes they need to manually release the data.

I tried calling FSA about 12 times with no luck, then used Claimyr and got through in like 20 minutes. The agent confirmed our FAFSA was complete but had a transmission flag preventing it from going to schools. They fixed it while I was on the phone!

Thank you so much for this detailed advice! I've already emailed screenshots to two schools, but I'll send them to all the others on my daughter's list too. I'll definitely check out Claimyr - at this point I'd do anything to talk to a real person who can help us. I really appreciate everyone's suggestions!

I had a similar issue and finally got it resolved last week. Even though the FAFSA shows as processed with an SAI, there can still be hidden issues preventing transmission to schools. In my case, there was a mismatch between how my daughter's name was entered in the FAFSA system versus her FSA ID profile. The only way I found this out was by eventually getting through to an agent who could see the internal error codes. Keep trying different times to call - I finally got through at exactly 8:00 AM Eastern when they opened.

That's interesting about the name mismatch! My daughter goes by her middle name but we used her legal first name on all the forms. I wonder if something similar could be happening. I'll try calling right when they open tomorrow. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Have you also checked if both you and your daughter fully completed the "Review & Submit" steps? Sometimes people think they've submitted when they actually just saved their progress. Also, did you receive email confirmations of submission from FSA? That would confirm both applications were fully completed.

Yes, we both went through all the Review & Submit steps and received confirmation emails back in January. That's what makes this so frustrating - everything seems to be done correctly! I'm going to try the suggestions about contacting an agent directly and having schools manually check for her information. Thanks for trying to help troubleshoot this!

UPDATE: We finally got this resolved! After trying for days, I used Claimyr to reach an FSA agent who discovered the problem. Even though our FAFSA showed as processed with an SAI number, there was a transmission block because my daughter's birth date was entered differently in two places (typo on my part - I put month/day reversed in one section). The agent fixed it immediately and confirmed our FAFSA is now being sent to all schools. Just wanted to update in case anyone else runs into similar issues. THANK YOU all for your help and suggestions!
