FAFSA email response took 5 months - what's even the point?

I seriously can't believe this. I emailed the Federal Student Aid office back in JANUARY about my dependency override documentation for my 2024-2025 FAFSA. Just checked my inbox today and FINALLY got a response... in MAY!!! What exactly am I supposed to do with this information now? My SAI calculation is already messed up, I've missed priority deadlines at two schools, and their response basically just directed me to a webpage I already found months ago. Has anyone else dealt with these ridiculous response times? I'm about to lose my housing stipend because my financial aid package is incomplete, and I'm starting to think these people don't actually want us to get through college.

Unfortunately that's pretty standard for FAFSA email responses. They're completely overwhelmed with the new system rollout. Your best bet is to call the FSA Information Center directly at 1-800-433-3243. If you get them on the phone, they can usually resolve dependency override questions in one call.

I've tried calling like 20 times and either get disconnected or sit on hold for hours! Did you actually manage to get through to someone? What time of day did you call?

lol welcome to government efficiency at its finest... same thing happened to me last yr when I needed verification help. by the time they responded i had already figured it out myself

This happened to me twice during my FAFSA journey! I found out that calling is the only way to get timely help, but it's nearly impossible to get through. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that held my place in line and called me back when an agent was available. Saved me hours of hold time. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ\n\nOnce I actually talked to someone, they fixed my dependency override issue in about 10 minutes. The email system is basically useless for time-sensitive FAFSA problems.

Never heard of this before... does it actually work? I'm getting desperate enough to try anything at this point.

Yeah, it worked for me. I was skeptical too but I was in a similar situation with deadlines approaching. Got connected to an agent in about 30 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. The agent was able to process my dependency override documentation right away.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!!! I had same issue with emails AND CALLS. They don't care about students AT ALL. My son lost his scholarship because FAFSA couldn't get their act together with the verification process. This is INTENTIONAL to discourage people from getting aid!!!

While the system certainly has issues this year with the FAFSA Simplification Act implementation, I don't believe it's intentional. The Department of Education is dealing with massive system overhauls while staff shortages continue. For dependency overrides specifically, it's better to work directly with your school's financial aid office than waiting for FSA responses, as schools have the final authority on dependency overrides anyway.

have u tried going to ur schools financial aid office? they helped me with my override faster than fafsa did

I talked to them first actually. They're the ones who told me to contact FAFSA directly about the SAI calculation issue since they can't override that part. The whole system is a mess.

Financial aid counselor here. You're absolutely right to be frustrated. Email responses are at historically slow times this year due to the system changes. For your specific situation with the dependency override affecting your SAI calculation, here's what you should do:\n\n1. Contact your school's financial aid office and request a professional judgment review based on the delayed FAFSA response\n2. Bring documentation of when you initially submitted your inquiry to FSA\n3. Ask for a priority deadline exception due to the federal system delays\n4. If the school won't budge, request a formal appeal through their financial aid committee\n\nSchools have been instructed by the Department of Education to make accommodations for these exact situations this year. They have the authority to process aid packages with incomplete FAFSA information while corrections are in process, especially for dependency override situations.\n\nRegarding your housing stipend - make sure to specifically mention the housing deadline to the financial aid office. They can often issue a temporary housing clearance while your full package is being processed.

Thank you so much for this detailed response! I didn't realize there was a formal appeal option. I'll try this route tomorrow and see if I can get that temporary housing clearance. Really appreciate the help.

When I was trying to do my FAFSA last month for 2024-2025, I had a similar issue with trying to get information on how to handle my parents' contribution situation after my parents separated. I emailed in April and still haven't heard back. I gave up and just called my school's financial aid office directly. They helped override some things on their end even though my FAFSA is technically still

is it just me or has fafsa gotten way worse this year?? my 2023 application was smooth but this 2024-25 one has been a nightmare

It's not just you. FAFSA launched a completely redesigned system for the 2024-2025 application (called the FAFSA Simplification Act). It was delayed by months and has had significant technical issues. The new SAI calculation replaced the old EFC formula, and many of the systems that schools use haven't been properly updated to work with the new format. It's causing headaches for everyone.

UPDATE: I took the advice from this thread and managed to get through to someone at FSA using that callback service someone mentioned. The agent was actually super helpful and confirmed there was an error in how my dependency override was processed. They're expediting a correction and said it should be updated in 5-7 business days. \n\nI also went to my school's financial aid office in person (thanks for that suggestion) and they issued me a temporary housing authorization while we wait for the SAI recalculation. Apparently lots of students are having similar issues this year.\n\nThanks everyone for the help! Still ridiculous it took 5 months for an email response though.

Great to hear! Make sure to follow up if you don't see the correction in 7 days - sometimes you need to keep pushing. And for anyone else reading this thread with dependency override issues, remember that you need to resubmit your override documentation each year. The override doesn't automatically carry forward, even though many other FAFSA elements now do.
