FAFSA deadline question - Can my daughter's friend's immigrant mom still complete her parent portion?

My daughter's best friend is originally from Ghana but is now a US citizen. His mom is also a citizen but was born in Ghana. He completed his part of the FAFSA about 2-3 months ago, but his mom didn't fully understand what she needed to do, so she never completed the parent portion. Now she understands the process, but I'm worried they've missed some deadline. Can she still log in and complete her section? Or is it too late for the 2025-2026 school year? I don't know the exact date he submitted his part. The student is really stressed because some colleges are asking for his FAFSA and he doesn't know what to tell them.

Its not 2 late! The fafsa deadline is June 30, 2026 for the 2025-2026 yr so shes good. they should do it ASAP tho cuz some schools have way earlier priority deadlines for max $$$

Thank you! That's a relief. I'll let them know right away. Do you know if she needs anything special to complete her portion since she's a naturalized citizen?

It's definitely not too late! The federal FAFSA deadline for 2025-2026 is June 30, 2026. However, as the previous commenter mentioned, many colleges have priority deadlines that are much earlier - some as early as February or March. These priority deadlines determine eligibility for institutional aid, which is often first-come, first-served. Since the student's mother is now a citizen, she'll need her: - Social Security Number - 2023 tax information - Records of untaxed income - Current asset information She should log in using the parent FSA ID she created (or create one if she hasn't yet). The student should provide her with the Save Key that was created when he started the application.

This is so helpful! He says she does have an FSA ID but was confused about the Save Key part. I'll make sure they have the 2023 tax information ready.

I went through a similar situation with my nephew who's also an immigrant. While the federal deadline is June 30, 2026, PLEASE don't wait! Many schools give out institutional aid on a first-come, first-served basis. Also, some states have their own deadlines that are much earlier than the federal one. One thing I learned - since both your daughter's friend and his mom are naturalized citizens, they will need to provide their dates of citizenship. The FAFSA system sometimes flags applications with citizenship date discrepancies for verification, which can cause weeks of delays. Make sure they have those documents ready!

Oh gosh, I hadn't even thought about the citizenship dates. I'll definitely mention this to them. Do you know if there's any way to check which state deadlines might apply to them? They're in Illinois.

i work in financial aid at a college and see this ALL THE TIME! tell them to submit ASAP!! the parent just needs to use her FSA ID to log in, enter the student's save key, and she can complete her portion. the real issue isn't the federal deadline - it's that colleges can't complete his financial aid package without a completed FAFSA, and he might miss out on scholarships or grants. some schools won't even consider him for housing until FAFSA is done.

Thank you for this insider perspective! He's been stressing about housing too - now I understand why. I'll make sure they complete this this weekend.

When my daughter applied to college I waited too long because I didn't understand the FAFSA and she lost out on a $5,000 scholarship because we missed their priority deadline. Don't let that happen to your daughter's friend! The federal deadline isn't what matters - it's the school deadlines that really count. Every day they wait could literally cost them thousands in potential aid.

That's terrible about your daughter's scholarship! Thanks for the warning. I'm going to text his mom directly today to make sure she understands the urgency.

I'm dealing with the FAFSA nightmare right now too. If they're having trouble getting through to the Federal Student Aid helpline (which is ALWAYS busy), I found a service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual human at FSA in about 20 minutes instead of the hours I spent trying on my own. Saved me so much frustration! Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ In my experience, getting direct help from FSA was crucial for immigrant parents with citizenship questions. They guided us through exactly what documents were needed and how to properly report the citizenship status.

That's really helpful! The mom's English is good but she sometimes struggles with technical terms, so speaking directly with someone might be better than trying to figure it out online.

His mom needs to complete her portion IMMEDIATELY! The FAFSA itself has a June 30 deadline, but that doesn't mean anything if his colleges have earlier deadlines. My son missed out on so much aid because we were just a week late for one school's priority deadline. And make sure she enters her citizenship date correctly! My sister (naturalized citizen) put the wrong date and got flagged for verification which took FOREVER to resolve. Check, double-check, and triple-check all citizenship documentation before submitting.

Everyone's comments about the priority deadlines are really opening my eyes. I had no idea the actual federal deadline wasn't the main concern. I'll make sure they're very careful with the citizenship dates too.

Also make sure they put in the correct Asset Net Worth and don't include their primary residence in that amount!!! I see SO MANY FAFSA forms where people accidentally include their home value and it totally messes up their SAI (Student Aid Index) calculation. The system doesn't catch this error and it can make it look like they have WAY more assets than they really do for aid purposes.

That's a great tip. I'm not sure if they own their home, but I'll definitely pass this along. So much to keep track of with the FAFSA!

Illinois has a FAFSA priority date of December 1st for state aid through the MAP Grant program, so they've already missed that for full consideration. However, they should still complete it ASAP as MAP Grants are awarded until funds are depleted. For citizenship documentation, they need: - Dates of citizenship for both student and parent - Alien Registration Numbers (if they had them before citizenship) - Be prepared to provide copies of naturalization certificates if selected for verification One more tip: When entering the parent's information, she should use EXACTLY the same name as it appears on her Social Security card. Any discrepancy can cause processing delays.

This is so detailed and helpful! I didn't realize Illinois had its own deadline - that's concerning. I'll pass all this information along and hopefully they can get it done this weekend. Thank you all so much for the advice!
