FAFSA dashboard shows processed but can't find my -$1500 SAI score anymore

I'm feeling completely lost with the FAFSA website right now. We submitted our application last week and when we submitted, we saw our SAI score was -$1500 (which I think is good?). But now we logged back in and I can't find that number anywhere! The dashboard shows 'processed' and there's some kind of checklist, but I cannot for the life of me figure out where to see our actual SAI score again. Am I missing something obvious? Also, the checklist is confusing me - does that mean we have more steps to complete? I thought once it said 'processed' we were done. Feeling like I'm missing something super basic here... sorry for the newbie questions! 😔

Don't worry, the FAFSA website can be confusing for everyone! When you see 'processed,' it means your FAFSA form has been successfully processed by Federal Student Aid. The -$1500 SAI (Student Aid Index) you saw initially is definitely good - negative numbers indicate higher financial need. To find your SAI now, click on 'View SAI and FAFSA Information' which should be under the 'You Are Here' section on your dashboard. The checklist you're seeing is likely showing next steps, which typically includes colleges receiving your information and them preparing aid packages. You don't need to do anything else with FAFSA right now unless they request verification.

Thank you so much for explaining! I've been looking all over for that 'View SAI and FAFSA Information' button but I swear it's not there. All I see is 'FAFSA Processing Information' but when I click that it just shows submission date and status. Is it possible they removed our SAI score for some reason?

i had literally the SAME problem last week, the website is so weirdly designed!! u have to go to menu > view your processed fafsa > click on the 2025-2026 application > student information > scroll all the way to the bottom. took me forever to find it!! 😫

OMG THANK YOU!!! I found it! You're a lifesaver! 🙏 Why do they make it so complicated??

The checklist is actually really important - it shows which schools have received your FAFSA data. Make sure all your schools are listed there. Sometimes you need to manually add schools if you didn't include them in your initial application. Also, check if any items say "Action Required" - that would mean you need to provide additional documentation. The -$1500 SAI score is good, but remember that each school will create their own financial aid package based on that score and their available funds.

Thanks for the explanation about the checklist. All our schools are listed but two of them say "Waiting for Processing" - is that normal? The others say "Information Sent" which I assume is good? None say "Action Required" thankfully!

Yes, "Waiting for Processing" is normal! It can take 1-3 weeks for all schools to receive and process your FAFSA information. "Information Sent" means those schools already have your data and are working on your aid package. You're in good shape - just keep checking occasionally to make sure nothing changes to "Action Required.

Dont feel bad, I have TWO kids in college and STILL get confused by the fafsa website every single time. It's like they deliberately make it complicated lol

I worked in a financial aid office for 3 years and I STILL find the design confusing sometimes! The system was supposedly "simplified" for 2025-2026 but they just moved everything around and confused everyone more. Classic government website design 🙄

When I was trying to check my son's FAFSA status last month, I kept getting disconnected from the FSA phone line after waiting 45+ minutes each time. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that held my place in line and called me back when an agent was available. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. The agent explained that the -$1500 SAI score disappears from the main dashboard after processing but is stored in the detailed application view (which is buried in the menus like someone mentioned). Super annoying design but at least I got answers!

Thank you for this recommendation! I might need this if I have more questions that I can't figure out from the website. Those long wait times are brutal!

Wait ur SAI is -$1500?? Mine is +$3890 is that bad?? I thought lower numbers were worse omg did I mess up my application?

0 coins

No, you didn't mess up! For SAI scores, lower (even negative) numbers indicate higher financial need, which often leads to more aid. A positive $3890 is still fairly low and you'll likely qualify for aid, just potentially less than someone with a negative score. Each school will use this number differently for their aid calculations - some schools are more generous than others with the same SAI score.

oh thank god, i was about to have a heart attack!! thx for explaining!

Just a heads up - make sure you check the "Communication Center" section of your FAFSA account weekly. That's where they'll notify you if they need any verification documents. About 30% of FAFSA filers get selected for verification, and if you miss those notifications, your aid could be delayed. The most annoying part of the new FAFSA system is how they hide important information in different places. And congrats on the -$1500 SAI - that typically qualifies for maximum Pell Grant eligibility!

Thank you! I didn't even know about the Communication Center. I'll check that regularly. And that's amazing news about possibly qualifying for maximum Pell Grant! My high school counselor mentioned that but I wasn't sure what a "good" SAI score was.

One more thing - now that your FAFSA is processed, you should start checking your actual college portals/accounts at each school. Many schools will post additional financial aid requirements there rather than through the FAFSA system. Some might require the CSS Profile in addition to FAFSA (mostly private colleges), and others might have institution-specific forms. Financial aid packages typically start coming out in March-April for the 2025-2026 year.

Great advice! I've created accounts on all the college portals but haven't been checking them regularly. Will start doing that. Two of the schools mentioned CSS Profile during application but I wasn't sure if that was required since we did FAFSA. I'll look into that immediately!
