FAFSA correction started automatically - should I remove myself from correction?

I'm completely confused about this correction status on my FAFSA. Every time I log in, it shows "FAFSA Correction Started" from May 3rd, but I never actually started one myself! When I click on actions, it gives me an option to "remove myself from correction" which wasn't there before (I think it used to say something else but can't remember what). \n\nShould I remove myself from this phantom correction since I never actually made one? I'm worried it's holding up my application processing.\n\nAlso, under the Contributor section, I see a status that says "invite sent" - am I supposed to do something with that? Did I mess up by not responding to something?\n\nMy SAI hasn't been calculated yet and I'm getting nervous about missing out on financial aid for the 2025-2026 year. Anyone else dealing with this glitch or know what to do?

I haven't clicked it yet! That's exactly my worry too - what if removing myself somehow cancels my whole application?? The FAFSA system is so glitchy this year.

Thank you for explaining! I'm going to try removing myself from the correction right now. For the contributor part - I definitely sent the invite to my mom weeks ago but she swears she completed everything. Should she check her email again or is there some way to resend the invite?

Your mom should double-check if she fully submitted her portion. Sometimes contributors think they've completed everything but missed clicking the final submission button. \n\nTo verify her status or resend the invite:\n1. Go to the Contributors section\n2. Click on her name\n3. You should see an option to \

Try using Claimyr to skip the FAFSA hold times. I was dealing with the same correction glitch and spent days trying to reach someone. Then I found claimyr.com which got me through to an actual FSA agent in about 10 minutes. They have a video demo of how it works here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ - seriously saved me hours of frustration and the agent was able to clear the glitch on my account right away.

The whole FAFSA system is GARBAGE this year!!! I've had nothing but problems since day 1. First the website crashed when I tried to create my FSA ID, then my parent's tax info wouldn't import correctly, now this correction nonsense. How are they expecting students to get financial aid when they can't even make a working website?? And don't get me started on trying to call them - I was on hold for TWO HOURS yesterday before getting disconnected.

I had the exact same issue with the correction status and contributor invite! What worked for me was 1) clicking remove from correction 2) making sure my mom used the EXACT same email address that I sent the invitation to when creating her FSA ID. Apparently if there's even a slight mismatch between the email I entered and the one she used for her FSA ID, the system gets confused. My application was processed within 3 days after fixing both issues. Hope this helps anyone still struggling!

THANK YOU!! I found a message asking for my 2023 tax transcript. Didn't even see that before. Uploading it now!

This is such a helpful thread! I'm dealing with the exact same "FAFSA Correction Started" issue that appeared out of nowhere. Based on what everyone is sharing, it sounds like this is definitely a system glitch and not something we actually did wrong. I'm going to try removing myself from the correction like Lucas and Sophie did. Quick question for @Logan Chiang - you mentioned that sometimes there are additional verification documents requested after removing from correction. Where exactly should we look for those messages? Is it in the main FAFSA dashboard or somewhere else? I want to make sure I don't miss anything like Anita almost did with her tax transcript request. Also wanted to say thanks to everyone sharing their experiences - it's so reassuring to know we're not alone in this mess of a FAFSA year!

@Sophia Bennett Great question! From what I ve'seen, those verification messages usually show up in a few places: 1 Right) on your main FAFSA dashboard - there s'usually a section for To "Do items" or Action "Required 2" In) your email check (spam folder too! 3) Sometimes) there s'a separate Messages "or" Communications "tab" in your StudentAid.gov account. I d'recommend checking all three spots after you remove yourself from correction. The messages don t'always appear immediately either - sometimes it takes 24-48 hours for the system to generate them. And definitely agree this whole FAFSA rollout has been a nightmare for everyone!

I'm in the exact same boat as everyone else! That phantom "FAFSA Correction Started" status has been haunting my account for weeks now. Reading through all your experiences really helps - I was so worried I had somehow messed something up without realizing it. I'm definitely going to follow the advice here and click "remove myself from correction" since it sounds like that's what got most of you back to processing status. It's ridiculous that we have to deal with these system glitches when we're already stressed enough about getting financial aid sorted out. Has anyone who successfully removed themselves from correction seen their SAI calculated yet? I'm curious how long the processing takes after you get past this hurdle. Also crossing my fingers that my parents don't run into any contributor issues like some of you mentioned!

@Dmitry Ivanov I can share my timeline since removing myself from correction! I clicked remove "from correction about" 5 days ago and my status changed to processing "within" a few hours. My SAI was actually calculated yesterday so (about 4 days total ,)but I think that s'because my mom had already completed her contributor portion weeks ago. From what I m'seeing in other threads, if your parents still need to complete their part, that seems to be the bigger bottleneck right now. The contributor invites are working better than they were a month ago, but some parents are still having trouble with the FSA ID creation process. Definitely remove yourself from that phantom correction though - it seems like that s'the first step for everyone to get unstuck. Just make sure to check back in 24-48 hours for any verification requests like others mentioned!

Just wanted to give everyone an update - I finally bit the bullet and clicked "remove myself from correction" after reading all your experiences here. You were all right! My status changed to "processing" within about 2 hours and I can already see some progress on my application. For anyone still hesitating like I was - this really does seem to be a widespread system glitch and not something we caused. The fact that so many people are experiencing the exact same phantom "FAFSA Correction Started" status that appeared out of nowhere is pretty clear evidence it's on their end. @Logan Chiang thanks for the professional insight - it's really helpful to hear from someone who works in financial aid and can confirm this is a known issue. I was getting so stressed thinking I had somehow messed up my application without realizing it. Now I just need to make sure my dad actually completed his contributor portion (he swears he did but we all know how that goes lol). Fingers crossed I'll have my SAI calculated soon!

@Victoria Jones That s'awesome news! So glad clicking remove "myself from correction worked" for you too. It s'such a relief to see your status actually change to something that makes sense, right? I was in the same boat - kept staring at that phantom correction status wondering what I could have possibly done wrong. The dad contributor situation is so relatable 😅 Mine kept insisting he finished everything but turned out he never actually hit the final submit button. You might want to have him double-check that he got a confirmation email after completing his part. If not, he probably needs to go back and actually submit it. It s'been really helpful reading everyone s'experiences here - makes you realize how many of us are dealing with the exact same FAFSA glitches this year. Hopefully your SAI gets calculated quickly once your dad s'portion is truly done!

This thread has been SO helpful - I was literally losing sleep over that same phantom "FAFSA Correction Started" status! Mine appeared around the same time as everyone else's (early May) and I've been too scared to touch anything. Reading all your updates has given me the confidence to finally click "remove myself from correction." It's clear this is a widespread system glitch and not something we did wrong. The fact that so many people are seeing the exact same issue with the exact same date is pretty telling. @Logan Chiang your professional insight really helped ease my anxiety about this whole situation. And @Miles Hammonds that tip about making sure the contributor email addresses match exactly is something I hadn't thought of - definitely going to double-check that with my parents. Going to remove myself from correction right now and then keep checking for any verification requests over the next few days. Fingers crossed I can finally get my SAI calculated and move forward with my financial aid applications. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - this community has been a lifesaver during this stressful FAFSA year!

@Leila Haddad I m'so glad this thread helped you too! I was in the exact same position - that phantom correction status was keeping me up at night wondering what I had done wrong. It s'such a relief to know it s'just another FAFSA system glitch and not our fault. I just wanted to add that after removing myself from correction yesterday, I noticed my application moved to processing pretty quickly, but then I got a message today asking for additional tax information. So definitely keep checking your account every day or two after you remove yourself - those verification requests seem to pop up at random times. The email matching tip from @Miles Hammonds is really important too! My mom had to redo her contributor portion because she used a slightly different email format than what I originally entered. Such a small detail but apparently it matters a lot to their system. Good luck with everything - hopefully we ll all'have our SAIs calculated soon and can finally move on from this FAFSA nightmare year! 🤞

Wow, I'm so relieved to find this thread! I've been dealing with the exact same "FAFSA Correction Started" phantom status since early May and have been too nervous to do anything about it. Reading everyone's experiences makes it clear this is definitely a system-wide glitch and not something we caused. I'm going to follow the advice here and click "remove myself from correction" right now. It's reassuring to see that so many of you successfully got your status changed to processing after doing this. The consistency of everyone's experiences really proves this is a FAFSA technical issue. @Logan Chiang thank you so much for the professional insight - it really helps to have confirmation from someone who works in financial aid that this is a known problem. And @Miles Hammonds that email matching tip is super helpful, I'm definitely going to verify that with my parents. I'll make sure to check back regularly for any verification requests that might pop up after removing the phantom correction. Fingers crossed I can finally get my SAI calculated and move forward with my aid applications. This whole FAFSA year has been such a mess but at least we're all figuring it out together!

@Ingrid Larsson You re'absolutely right to feel relieved! I was in the exact same situation just a few days ago - staring at that phantom correction status and being too scared to click anything. It s'amazing how consistent everyone s'experience has been with this glitch appearing around the same time in early May. I actually removed myself from correction about a week ago after reading through this thread, and it was the best decision! My status changed to processing within hours, and I just got my SAI calculated yesterday. The whole process moved much faster once I got past that phantom correction hurdle. One thing I d'add to everyone s'great advice - after you remove yourself from correction, don t'panic if your status seems to change a few times over the next day or two. Mine went from correction "started to" processing "to" requires "attention for" (a verification document and) then back to processing "before" finally completing. The system seems to go through several updates as it catches up. Good luck with removing the correction! You ve'got this, and hopefully you ll'see progress just as quickly as the rest of us did. This thread really has been a lifesaver during this chaotic FAFSA year! 💪

I'm dealing with this exact same issue! That phantom "FAFSA Correction Started" status showed up on my account around the same time as everyone else (early May) and I've been so confused about it. I definitely never started any correction myself, so it's such a relief to read that this is a widespread system glitch and not something we did wrong. Reading through all these experiences has been incredibly helpful - it's clear that clicking "remove myself from correction" is the way to go. I was hesitant before because I didn't want to mess up my application, but seeing so many success stories here gives me confidence to finally do it. @Logan Chiang thank you for the professional insight! It really helps to know this is a recognized issue from someone who works in financial aid. And @Miles Hammonds that tip about email addresses matching exactly is something I need to double-check with my parents. Going to remove myself from correction right now and then keep an eye out for any verification requests over the next few days. Hopefully I'll finally be able to get my SAI calculated and move forward with my aid applications. Thanks everyone for sharing - this thread has been such a lifesaver during what's been a really stressful FAFSA year!

@Ryder Ross I m'so glad you found this thread too! I was in the exact same boat last week - that phantom correction status had me so stressed out. It s'honestly crazy how many of us experienced this glitch at the exact same time in early May. Definitely proves it s'on their end and not something we did. I removed myself from correction about 4 days ago after reading everyone s'advice here, and it was the right call! My status changed to processing almost immediately, and now I m'just waiting on my mom to finish her contributor portion she (keeps saying she did but I m'not convinced lol .)One thing I d'add - make sure to check your account every day after removing the correction because verification requests can pop up randomly. I almost missed one that appeared 2 days later asking for additional documentation. You re'definitely making the right choice clicking remove "myself from correction -" everyone here who did it saw improvement pretty quickly. Good luck and hopefully you ll'have your SAI soon! This FAFSA year has been absolutely brutal but at least we re'all helping each other through it! 🙌
