FAFSA account verification taking forever - is this normal?
I created my studentaid.gov account last Thursday to start my 2025-2026 FAFSA application, but I still haven't received an email confirming my information was verified. The site said I'd get an email within 3 days, but it's been almost a week now. Is this normal? I'm starting to worry something went wrong with my submission. How long did verification take for you guys? Should I try making another account or would that mess things up even more?

it took like 2 days for me but my friend waited almost 2 weeks lol. the system is super random this year with all the new changes they made to FAFSA

•Two WEEKS? Ugh, that's so frustrating. I was hoping to submit my actual application this weekend. Did your friend do anything to speed it up or just wait?

The verification time varies quite a bit right now. The new FAFSA changes have created some bottlenecks in the system. Here's what I recommend: 1. Check your spam/junk folder - the verification emails often end up there 2. Make sure the email you provided is correct (you'd be surprised how many people mistype) 3. Don't create another account - that will definitely complicate things and could flag your application for manual review, which takes even longer If it's been more than 7 business days, then you should contact FSA directly to check on your status.

•Thanks, I double-checked my spam folder and the email I used is definitely correct. Guess I'll give it a couple more days before panicking. What's the best way to contact FSA if I need to? Their phone system always seems impossible to navigate.

I called them about this EXACT problem last month when I was trying to help my daughter. Spent 3 hours on hold and then got disconnected. Total waste of time.

•Same thing happened to me! The FSA phone system is a nightmare. I finally got through by using Claimyr.com - it holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Totally worth it when you're dealing with account verification issues that can hold up your whole application.

The verification timing actually depends on several factors: 1. Time of year (it's slower during peak application periods) 2. Complexity of your personal information (unusual names, addresses, or citizenship status can trigger additional verification) 3. Whether your email domain is recognized by their system (some university emails and smaller providers can face delays) In my experience working with students, most verifications happen within 3-5 business days, but the 2025-2026 FAFSA rollout has been causing delays across the board. The Student Aid Index (SAI) calculation changes have put strain on their systems. If you need to contact them, prepare your FSA ID, full name, date of birth, and Social Security Number before calling. And be prepared to wait - call volumes are extremely high right now.

•what's this SAI thing?? i thought they still used EFC to figure out financial aid? is this another new change they made??

@user3 Yes, the Student Aid Index (SAI) replaced the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) in the 2024-2025 FAFSA. It's basically the same concept but with some calculation adjustments that better reflect a family's ability to pay for college. The change was part of the FAFSA Simplification Act.

•This is all so confusing. I didn't realize they changed from EFC to SAI. Does this mean they'll calculate my financial need differently? My parents' finances are complicated since they're divorced and I'm not sure which parent should be filling out the contributor information.

Whatever u do DONT make another account!!! I did that last yr and they flagged both accounts for fraud review and I couldn't apply for financial aid for 3 MONTHS!!!! Just keep waiting, the system is super backed up right now cuz everyone's trying to get their aid figured out for 2025.

•Oh wow, that's terrible! Thanks for the warning - definitely won't create another account. I'll just wait it out then.

Regarding your parent situation - for divorced parents, the FAFSA now requires information from the parent who provided more financial support during the previous year. If support was equal, then it's the parent you lived with more. If that was also equal, then it's the parent with the higher income. This is actually one of the FAFSA simplifications that should make things easier compared to previous years. The CSS Profile (used by some private colleges) still requires information from both parents in many cases.

•That's really helpful, thank you! I lived with my mom most of last year, so I think she's the one who should be completing the contributor section. One less thing to stress about while I wait for this verification email!

ok i still dont get how this affects my pell grant amount?? will the SAI thing give me more money or less than the old way?? and does anyone know if they fixed that stupid glitch where you had to make a seperate username and password for the mobile app vs the website??

•The SAI vs. EFC change doesn't directly increase or decrease your Pell Grant eligibility - it's just a different name and slightly adjusted calculation. The maximum Pell Grant amount for 2025-2026 is projected to be around $7,400, but your individual amount depends on your financial situation. As for the mobile app issue, they've integrated the login credentials so you should be able to use the same FSA ID for both the website and mobile app now. That was fixed in the latest update.

My daughter's financial aid office told us that they're seeing TONS of delays with the new system. Her verification took 11 days!!! Then she had to submit additional id verification after that which took another 2 weeks. The whole process is a MESS compared to when my older kids applied years ago.

•11 days just for the initial account verification? That's ridiculous! Did she have to do anything special for the additional ID verification or did they just request it automatically?

They just randomly asked for it! No explanation - just an email saying she needed to upload her drivers license and social security card. SO frustrating. And of course no one answers the phone when you call to ask WHY they need all this extra stuff.

•ya the new "enhanced verification" is hitting ppl randomly. my roommate had to send pics of his passport, SS card, AND a utility bill which made no sense cuz he lives in a dorm lmao

Just wanted to update everyone - I finally got my verification email this morning! It ended up taking 9 days total, so definitely longer than the "3 days" they originally said. For anyone else waiting, I think the key is just being patient (as frustrating as that is). The system really does seem overwhelmed right now with all the FAFSA changes. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - it helped me feel less anxious about the wait!

Congrats on finally getting your verification email! 9 days is definitely on the longer side but seems pretty typical for what everyone's experiencing this year. I'm still waiting on mine (day 6 now) but your update gives me hope that it's coming soon. Did you have to do anything special after getting the verification email, or were you able to jump straight into filling out the actual FAFSA application?

•Hey! Once I got the verification email, I was able to log in and start the actual FAFSA right away - no additional steps needed. The whole application process was pretty straightforward after that initial wait. You're on day 6 so hopefully you'll get yours soon! I know it's nerve-wracking but it sounds like most people are getting theirs within that 7-10 day window, even though they say 3 days. Good luck!

I'm in the exact same situation! Created my account 8 days ago and still waiting for verification. It's so stressful seeing all these different timelines - some people get it in 2 days, others wait weeks. I keep checking my email and spam folder multiple times a day. At least reading everyone's experiences here makes me feel like I'm not alone in this. The new FAFSA system really seems to be struggling with the volume. Fingers crossed we both get our emails soon!

•I'm on day 7 myself so I totally understand the stress! The waiting is the worst part, especially when you're trying to plan out your application timeline. At least it sounds like most people are getting their verification between 7-10 days now, so we should be getting close. I've been refreshing my email way too often too lol. Hang in there - based on what everyone's sharing here, it seems like the system is just really backed up but eventually everyone does get through!

I'm dealing with this same issue right now - created my account 5 days ago and still no verification email. It's honestly really frustrating because I was hoping to get my FAFSA submitted early this year to avoid any last-minute stress. Reading through everyone's experiences here is both reassuring and concerning at the same time. It sounds like the new system changes have really created a bottleneck, but at least it seems like most people eventually get through. I'm going to try to be patient for a few more days before reaching out to FSA directly. Thanks for posting this question - it's helpful to know I'm not the only one experiencing these delays!

•I'm in exactly the same boat! Day 6 here and constantly refreshing my email. It's really helpful seeing everyone's timelines - sounds like 7-10 days is becoming the new normal even though they still say 3 days on the website. I was also hoping to submit early to avoid stress but I guess we're all in the same situation with these system delays. At least we know it's not just us and that people are eventually getting through! Hopefully we'll both get our verification emails in the next couple days.

I'm currently on day 12 waiting for my verification email and honestly starting to panic a bit! Reading through everyone's experiences here is both comforting and terrifying - it sounds like most people get theirs within 7-10 days but some are waiting weeks. I've triple-checked my spam folder, confirmed my email address is correct, and I'm definitely not making a second account after reading about the fraud review nightmare. Has anyone who waited this long eventually gotten through, or should I start trying to contact FSA? The phone system sounds like a disaster but I'm worried something went wrong with my application.
