FAFSA account validation taking longer than 5 days - should I be worried?
My son started creating his student account on the studentaid.gov site last Thursday and got a message saying it would take 3-5 business days to validate his identity. It's now been 6 days and we still haven't heard anything. No email confirmation, no updates when we log in. The status just says 'pending validation.' Is this normal wait time for FAFSA account creation or should we be concerned? We're trying to get his 2025-2026 application submitted by December for early consideration at his top schools. Anyone else experiencing delays with new accounts?

•Thanks, that's somewhat reassuring. Did you get an email when it was finally validated or did you just have to keep checking?

The FSA system is currently experiencing higher than normal validation times due to increased security measures. While the website says 3-5 business days, many students are currently seeing 7-10 business day processing times for new accounts. This is normal but frustrating. I recommend continuing to check the account daily. You'll receive an email once validation is complete, but sometimes these emails go to spam folders, so check there as well.

•Thanks for the detailed response. That makes me feel better about the timeline. We'll keep checking daily and I'll make sure he's watching his spam folder too.

OMG the FAFSA system is COMPLETLY BROKEN!!!! My daughter's account took FOURTEEN DAYS to validate last month and then when it was finally done, the system wouldn't accept her SAR review. We had to start ALL OVER AGAIN with a new email and everything. This whole process is a NIGHTMARE and no one at fsa seems to even care that students can't apply!!!

•While there have been some technical issues with the redesigned system, most account validations are being processed successfully, just with delays. If you encounter errors after validation, clearing your browser cache and using a different browser often resolves those issues. The FSA team is actually working overtime to address the backlog.

wait i'm confused, does validation mean they're checking his identity or they're reviewing the whole application? my brother is applying too and i'm trying to help him

•Validation just refers to verifying his identity during the account creation process. This happens before he can even start filling out the FAFSA application. The actual FAFSA review comes later after submission and is a separate process (which also takes time).

I was trying to reach FSA for 3 days straight about my daughter's account validation, kept getting disconnected or waiting for hours. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual person at FSA in about 20 minutes. They confirmed there was a flag on her account that needed manual review, which is why it was taking longer. You might want to check out their demo video if you want to talk to someone directly: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ

•I hadn't thought about calling them directly. If we don't see any updates by tomorrow, I'll definitely try this. Thanks for sharing!

This happened to me! It took about 9 business days for my account to finally get validated. I was getting really nervous because my school's priority deadline for scholarships is coming up. I think they're just totally swamped with the new FAFSA system changes. One thing I did notice - when my account was finally validated, the email notification went to my spam folder, so make sure your son is checking there too.

•That's good to know about the spam folder! I'll have him add studentaid.gov to his safe senders list right away. Did everything go smoothly after validation or were there other delays?

•The actual FAFSA application went pretty smooth after that initial validation wait. One small hiccup with the parent contribution section, but overall way better than the account setup wait. Just make sure you both have your FSA IDs ready and tax info handy!

While waiting for account validation, make sure your son has prepared everything else he'll need for the FAFSA submission: 1. His Social Security Number 2. Your latest tax return information (2023 tax year for the 2025-2026 FAFSA) 3. Records of untaxed income for both you and him 4. Information on savings, investments, and business assets 5. List of schools he's applying to (with their school codes) This way, once his account is validated, you can complete the application quickly. With the new FAFSA simplification, the process should be faster than previous years, despite the initial account validation delays.

•That's a good reminder. We've gathered most of this already, but I need to double-check if we have the school codes. Is there a place to look those up online?

•Yes, you can find school codes using the Federal School Code Search on studentaid.gov or directly at https://fafsa.ed.gov/spa/fsc/#/fsc. Just enter the school name and state, and it will show you the code. I recommend creating a document with all codes before starting the application.

btw has anyone noticed if these validation delays affect the SAI calculations? my cousin said his took longer because of some weird issue with his name spelling

•The account validation process doesn't affect SAI (Student Aid Index) calculations at all. Those calculations happen after the FAFSA is submitted and are based on the financial information provided in the application. The validation delay just pushes back when you can start completing the form.

UPDATE: His account was finally validated this morning! Took exactly 8 business days. For anyone having the same issue, definitely check your spam folder - that's where we found the confirmation email. Thanks everyone for the reassurance and advice. Now onto actually completing the FAFSA application!

•Great news! Remember to submit well before any priority deadlines, as there can sometimes be processing delays on the completed application as well. Best of luck!

Congratulations on getting through the validation process! This thread is really helpful for understanding the current timeline. I'm a new member here and my daughter is just starting her FAFSA journey for next year. It's reassuring to see that 8 business days seems to be pretty normal right now, even though it's longer than the official 3-5 days they advertise. The tip about checking spam folders is gold - I'll make sure she sets up her email properly from the start. Thanks for sharing your experience and keeping us updated!

•Welcome to the community! You're getting started at a good time to learn from everyone's experiences. One thing I'd also suggest is having your daughter bookmark this thread - there's so much useful info here about the whole process beyond just the validation delays. The preparation checklist from Maya and the troubleshooting tips will probably come in handy when you're actually filling out the application too.
