FAFSA CA deadline today but system errors blocking submission - any hope for state aid?
I'm freaking out right now. I have 6 students who've been trying to submit their FAFSA applications for WEEKS to meet California's March 2nd deadline (today!!!), but they keep hitting system errors at the final submission step. One student has tried 14 TIMES! They all have their SAI calculations complete, parent signatures done, everything - but the submit button just throws an error. If they miss today's deadline, they'll lose out on Cal Grants worth up to $13,000! That's life-changing money for these families. I've been on hold with the CA Student Aid Commission twice today but got disconnected both times. Has anyone heard if California is offering extensions due to the FAFSA technical issues? Or any workarounds to force the submission through? I've already had three parents in tears in my office today, and I don't know what to tell them.

omg this FAFSA disaster is criminal!! My daughter spent 3 weeks trying to get hers submitted too. We finally got through at 2am when the system wasn't so overloaded. Tell ur students to try submitting between 1-4am if they can. That worked for us after 8 failed attempts during normal hours.

•Thanks for the tip about late-night submissions! I'll definitely pass that along. Did you have to deal with the infamous "We cannot continue processing your FAFSA form at this time" error? That's what most of them are seeing.

California college financial aid counselor here - I just got off a call with the CA Student Aid Commission this morning. They're aware of the widespread FAFSA technical issues and while there's no official extension YET, they're documenting cases where students made legitimate attempts to submit before the deadline. Have your students take screenshots of their errors and the completed application pages. They should also use the FAFSA help center to report the specific technical errors. The Commission is collecting this data to potentially make accommodations for affected students. Also, if any of your students are undocumented or have DACA status, remind them they can use the CA Dream Act Application instead, which hasn't had the same technical issues.

•This is incredibly helpful information, thank you! I'll have all the students document their errors with screenshots immediately. Do you know if there's a specific email address or form where they should submit this documentation to the CA Student Aid Commission?

•There's no dedicated submission portal for the documentation yet, but have them save everything. If/when CSAC makes an announcement about accommodations, they'll likely create a verification process. One more thing - make sure they're still trying to submit! Some students are getting through eventually after multiple attempts. The system seems to work better in off-hours as the other commenter mentioned.

•We've tried Chrome, Edge, Safari, and even Firefox. Some students even tried on their phones after computer attempts failed. It seems like the issues are deeper than just browser compatibility, but I'll definitely suggest clearing cookies - we haven't systematically tried that yet.

As someone who works for a college financial aid office, I recommend documenting EVERYTHING. Take screenshots showing the completed application with timestamps, save confirmation emails from any successful parent signatures, etc. For Cal Grants specifically, I know CSAC is discussing potential accommodations, but students should also immediately contact the financial aid offices at each California college they applied to. Many institutions have emergency aid funds they can use to help students who miss state deadlines due to technical issues beyond their control. Also worth noting - even if they miss the March 2nd priority deadline, students should still submit ASAP. They may not get Cal Grants, but would still be eligible for institutional aid at many colleges, and the federal deadline is much later (June 30th).

•Thank you for the excellent advice. I'll make sure all affected students document everything thoroughly. It's a relief to hear that CSAC is considering accommodations. Great point about contacting individual college financial aid offices too - I hadn't thought of that angle. At least the federal aid should still be available if we can eventually get these applications submitted.

Why are people always waiting till last minute??? The FAFSA has been available since December! This happens every year with Cal Grants, people procrastinate then blame system.

•I understand your frustration, but these particular students have been actively working on their FAFSAs since January. They've dealt with the new FSA ID verification issues, parent contribution complications, and now submission errors. Many families needed time to gather tax documents or resolve FSA ID verification problems. The new FAFSA rollout this year has been exceptionally challenging.

•Seriously? This year's FAFSA rollout has been a documented disaster. The Dept of Education even apologized for it. My daughter started in December and still couldn't submit until February because of all the technical issues. Maybe learn the facts before judging people.

Just wanted to share that I had the EXACT same issue with my son's FAFSA last week. We were going crazy trying to submit! After being on hold with Federal Student Aid for over 2 hours (got disconnected twice), I discovered Claimyr.com which got us through to an actual FAFSA agent in about 15 minutes. They helped us troubleshoot the submission error and got it fixed on the spot. They have a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Might be worth it to get those applications submitted today. The agent we spoke with also documented in our file that we had been attempting to submit before the deadline in case there were any questions later.

•Thank you for sharing this resource! I'll definitely check out Claimyr. At this point, getting through to an actual human at Federal Student Aid seems like the best option. Did they help specifically with the final submission error, or did they have to make adjustments to the application first?

•The agent actually walked us through a specific fix - there was some kind of backend issue with how our tax information was being processed. Once they made the adjustment on their end, we were able to submit immediately. Definitely worth trying since time is so tight with today's deadline!

Update from someone with insider info: CSAC is meeting TODAY to discuss an extension for CA students facing technical issues. Nothing official yet, but the word is they're considering a 2-week grace period where students who can document attempts before March 2nd would still qualify for Cal Grants. Don't quote me, but announcement could come as early as tomorrow.

•This would be an absolute lifesaver if true. Thank you for sharing! I'll keep watching for an official announcement, but this gives me some hope to share with my students and their families in the meantime.

**EDITED TO ADD:** After being on hold for nearly an hour, I finally got through to the CA Student Aid Commission. For students who have both parent and student with SSNs but are having FAFSA submission issues, they said students can submit the CA Dream Act Application as a backup. They will still need to complete the FAFSA by June 30th and submit an Application Conversion Form (G-55), but this ensures they won't miss Cal Grant eligibility. Hope this helps!

•This is EXTREMELY helpful information! I had no idea the Dream Act Application could be used as a backup in this situation. Thank you so much for taking the time to call and share this workaround. I'm going to start helping students with this approach immediately.

•wait what?? i thought dream app was only for undocumented students? my daughter has SSN but hasn't been able to submit FAFSA. can she really do the dream application instead?? this would be huge if true!

•Yes, it's normally for undocumented students, but CSAC is making this exception due to the FAFSA technical issues. The key is they MUST still submit the FAFSA by the federal deadline (June 30) and file the G-55 conversion form afterward. It's basically a backup to ensure they don't miss Cal Grant consideration.

As a California parent who just went through this nightmare with my twins, I wanted to share what finally worked for us after days of submission errors. We kept getting the "cannot continue processing" error even though everything was complete. What saved us was calling the Federal Student Aid hotline at 1-800-4-FED-AID and specifically asking them to check for "backend data corruption" on our applications. Turns out there was some kind of glitch with how our tax information was being processed that wasn't visible to us. The agent fixed it on their end and we were able to submit immediately after. For anyone still struggling - make sure to mention "backend data corruption" when you call. The first-level support didn't know what that meant, but when I got transferred to a technical specialist, they knew exactly what to look for. Both my kids' applications went through within minutes after the fix. Also documenting everything is crucial - I took screenshots every step of the way showing our completed applications with timestamps, which the agent noted in our file as proof of our attempts before the deadline.
