FAFSA 2025-2026 still processing after 6 weeks - submitted in early January
I'm getting seriously worried about my FAFSA application. I submitted everything on January 3rd, literally the first week applications opened, and here we are in mid-February with NOTHING to show for it. My application status just shows 'processing' when I log in to studentaid.gov. No SAI calculation, no emails, nothing. My college financial aid deadlines are coming up fast, and I'm panicking because some of them need the FAFSA info by March 1st. Has anyone else been waiting this long? Is this normal for the new FAFSA system? I've tried calling FSA multiple times but keep getting disconnected after waiting for 45+ minutes. At this point I don't know what to do!

•Wait, your brother applied LAST WEEK and already got results? That's so frustrating! Did he do anything different with his application?

This is unfortunately very common with the new FAFSA system this year. The Department of Education announced processing delays due to the FAFSA Simplification Act changes. Early applications are taking 4-6 weeks minimum, with many taking 8+ weeks. However, I recommend you contact your college financial aid offices ASAP to explain the situation - most schools are aware of the delays and have extended their priority deadlines or will mark your file as "FAFSA pending" if you can show you've submitted it. Take screenshots of your submission confirmation as evidence.

•Thank you so much for the information. I'll definitely reach out to my schools today. Do you know if there's any way to expedite the processing? I'm really worried about losing scholarship opportunities.

I work in financial aid at a university, and we're seeing this across the board. The FSA promised faster processing with the new FAFSA, but the reality is many early filers are waiting longer than those who filed later. Your best approach is to: 1. Contact each school's financial aid office to notify them of your situation 2. Check if they have internal forms you can complete while waiting 3. Ask about provisional aid packages based on previous year data 4. Document every attempt to resolve this (screenshots, call logs, etc.) Schools know this is happening and most are being flexible with deadlines for circumstances beyond student control.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I'll start documenting everything right away. Do you think I should also try to contact my state grant agency since they have separate deadlines?

•Yes, absolutely contact your state grant agency! Many states have strict deadlines that are separate from schools, and they may have alternative procedures in place. Some states are extending deadlines while others are creating provisional eligibility processes. Document that contact as well.

This happend to my daughter too but hers just went through yesterday after almost 7 weeks!!! the wierd thing was she didnt get any email about it, she just happened to check her account and saw the SAI was finally there. Maybe check your account even if you havent gotten a notification?

•I just checked again right after reading this and still nothing 😞 But that gives me hope that it might just appear randomly! Did your daughter do anything to make it go through or did it just happen on its own?

After dealing with the same thing for nearly 7 weeks, I finally reached a live person at Federal Student Aid who told me my application had an error flag that wasn't showing up in my online account. They fixed it in 5 minutes and my SAI showed up 2 days later. Problem was trying to reach someone - I spent hours getting disconnected. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that holds your place in the phone queue and calls you when an agent is ready. Saved me hours of time and got my problem fixed. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that shows how it works. Might be worth trying since you're on a deadline.

•This is really helpful! I had no idea there could be error flags that don't show up online. Did the agent say if this is a common problem? I'm going to check out that service right now - at this point I'll try anything!

•Yes, the agent said it's super common this year! Apparently the new system has a bunch of verification flags that don't display in your online account. She said they're getting thousands of calls about this exact issue. Hope you get through to someone soon!

I was skeptical too at first, but it worked for me. They just need your phone number to call you back when an agent is available. You don't give them any FAFSA info or anything sensitive. Definitely better than being on hold for hours and getting disconnected repeatedly.

•Update: I tried the Claimyr service yesterday, and it actually worked! Got through to an FSA agent who found an issue with my parent contribution section that was causing the delay. She fixed it on the spot, and my SAI calculation should be coming through in the next 48-72 hours. Thank you all for the help and suggestions!

the whole fafsa system is a JOKE!!! I applied Dec 30 (literally the day it opened) and STILL processing. Meanwhile my roommate applied feb 1 and got her SAI in 10 days. HOW DOES THAT MAKE ANY SENSE?? The dept of education is completely incompetent and doesn't care that they're ruining students' futures. I've called 9 TIMES and can't get through to anyone. This is my last chance at affording college and they're screwing me over.

•I understand your frustration completely. One thing that might help: check if your application has any parent/contributor sections that are incomplete. We're seeing many early applications stuck because contributors haven't completed their sections or there's a mismatch in the tax information. The system doesn't always clearly notify you about these issues.

Final update for anyone finding this thread later: My SAI finally came through this morning! Total processing time was 6 weeks and 5 days from submission. For those still waiting - try calling FSA directly as there might be hidden issues with your application that don't show up online. And definitely notify your schools about the delay - mine were all understanding and said they're seeing this with lots of students.

•That's great news! For others reading this thread, here's what we're consistently seeing with the 2025-2026 FAFSA processing times: • Applications with parent/contributor sections: 4-8 weeks • Applications with special circumstances: 6-10 weeks • Applications with no complications: 2-4 weeks The Department of Education has acknowledged these delays and stated they're working on improvements, but students should plan accordingly for next year's cycle.
