Can't access saved FAFSA application to make corrections before signing - help needed
I started my FAFSA for 2025-2026 yesterday and got about halfway through before I had to leave for work. I clicked save and logged out thinking I could easily pick up where I left off. Now I'm trying to get back in to make some corrections to my parent contribution section (realized I entered wrong W-2 amounts), but the system keeps taking me to a brand new application instead of my saved one! I've tried logging in through the studentaid.gov dashboard and clicking 'continue FAFSA form' but it's still starting me from scratch. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a specific way to access a saved-but-not-submitted application? Getting really frustrated and don't want to start over completely.

Check the upper right corner of your FAFSA dashboard. There should be a dropdown menu called 'My FAFSA' that shows all your in-progress applications. If you don't see it there, try clearing your browser cache and cookies - the site sometimes gets stuck in a weird state where it can't find your saved progress. Also make sure you're using the exact same login credentials you used when you started.

•Thanks for responding! I don't see any dropdown called 'My FAFSA' - just my name in the corner. Should that be where the dropdown is? I'm definitely using the same login because I only have one FSA ID. I'll try clearing cache now.

•Oh no, that's what I'm afraid of! Did you ever figure out what happened to your saved version?

There's actually a specific way to access saved applications. When you log in to studentaid.gov, don't click on "Start FAFSA Form" - instead look for "Returning User" or "Continue FAFSA Form" option. If that doesn't work, check if you might have accidentally created two FSA IDs. I've seen students create multiple accounts accidentally when they get frustrated with the login process. Also, if you can't see your saved application, check which aid year you're selecting. Make sure you're choosing 2025-2026 and not accidentally clicking on a different year's application.

•I'm definitely clicking "Continue FAFSA Form" but it still starts me over. The aid year selection is right (2025-2026). Is there maybe a specific timeframe where saved applications expire? I only started it yesterday so I can't imagine that's the issue.

I've been having EXACTLY the same problem today!!! So frustrating. I've tried everything - different browsers, clearing cache, etc. I think there might be a glitch in the system right now. Anyone know how to actually talk to a human at FAFSA? I tried calling the number on their site but I've been on hold for over an hour.

•I was stuck with the same issue last week and after hours on hold, I finally got through using Claimyr. It's a service that holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me so much time! You can check out how it works at claimyr.com or watch their demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. The FSA agent told me there's a 30-minute timeout for their system sessions even if you save, so sometimes data gets partially saved if the connection is interrupted. They had to help me recover my application.

The FAFSA system is ABSOLUTE GARBAGE. This happens EVERY YEAR and they never fix it!! I lost THREE different saved applications last cycle and had to complete everything from scratch. Their IT department is clearly run by monkeys. The whole system needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. Here's what I learned: their save function is basically broken. The only safe approach is to complete the entire application in one sitting and submit it. Even if you think it saved, it probably didn't. This is why thousands of students don't complete their FAFSAs - the technology is broken and unusable.

•While I understand your frustration, I don't think the save function is completely broken for everyone. There are usually specific triggers for these issues. @OP - one thing to check: did you receive a confirmation email when you saved your application? Sometimes the system sends a save confirmation with a special link to resume.

Check if ur using the mobile site vs desktop version. sometimes the saves dont transfer between them

•That's a good point! I started on my laptop but now I'm trying on my phone. I'll try getting back on my laptop and see if that helps.

Just to follow up, another consideration is that the FAFSA system sometimes creates a "save key" when you save your progress - it's different from your FSA ID password. It should have prompted you to create this when you first saved. Do you remember if you created a save key? If so, when you click "Continue FAFSA Form," it should ask for this key. Also, is it possible you might have inadvertently started filling out a paper FAFSA PDF rather than the online application? The paper version wouldn't save to your online account.

•I just checked and you're right! It's asking for a save key, but I don't remember creating one. Is there any way to recover the save key? And no, I definitely started the online application, not a PDF version.

UPDATE: Success! After trying different browsers, I found my saved application on Chrome (I originally used Safari). AND I found my save key written on a post-it note I had completely forgotten about. I'm now back in my application and can make the W-2 corrections before submitting. Thank you all for your help and suggestions!

•That's great news! For future reference (and anyone else reading this), I recommend keeping your save key in a password manager or notes app on your phone. The FAFSA system basically treats each browser as a separate user, which explains why you couldn't find your saved application initially.

•Congrats! I'm still working with FAFSA support to recover mine. So ridiculous that they make this process so complicated.
