How to edit or delete an incomplete FAFSA form as a parent contributor?
I'm in the middle of completing my daughter's 2025-2026 FAFSA as a parent contributor, but I realized I made some major errors in the income section. I need to either go back and edit those sections or just start fresh with a new application. When I log in, I can't figure out how to navigate back to those sections or find any option to delete and restart. I've spent THREE HOURS trying to find a way to edit or delete this incomplete application. I called the FAFSA helpline twice, but both times the representatives gave me completely different (and unhelpful) advice - one told me to wait 3 days for the system to "reset" which makes no sense, and the other just kept transferring me until I got disconnected. Has anyone successfully edited or deleted an incomplete FAFSA application? I'm seriously frustrated and my daughter's priority deadline is coming up next month.

You absolutely can edit an incomplete FAFSA! When you log into StudentAid.gov and access the FAFSA form, look for the "FAFSA Review" option in the navigation sidebar. This will show you all sections of the form with checkmarks next to completed sections. You can click directly on any section to go back and edit it, even if you've already completed that section. The form stays editable until you've actually submitted it with signatures. As for deleting the entire application to start over, there's an option labeled "Delete FAFSA form" at the very bottom of your dashboard after you log in. You'll need to confirm the deletion. Just be aware that if you delete it, you'll lose ALL information you've entered and will need to start completely from scratch.

•Thank you SO MUCH! I found the FAFSA Review sidebar exactly where you said it would be. I had been looking at the top navigation only and completely missed that sidebar option. I was able to go back and fix the income information. This has saved me so much stress! I'm not going to delete it since I've already completed about 75% of the application correctly.

I had the exact same problem last yr with my sons app. Their website is sooooo confusing!! I ended up just waiting until it timed out after like 30 days I think?? Then I started over. But thats probably not helpful if u have a deadline coming up soon :

•Thanks for sharing your experience. I definitely can't wait 30 days with the priority deadline coming up. I'm going to try the FAFSA Review option that was suggested above. The website really is horribly designed though!

The most efficient way to edit an in-progress FAFSA is to: 1) Log into studentaid.gov 2) Click "Complete the FAFSA Form" 3) Select "Log Into 2025-2026 FAFSA" 4) On the left navigation panel, click "FAFSA Review" 5) This displays all sections with completion status 6) Click any section heading to edit that section 7) Make your corrections 8) Click "Save" at the bottom of each page For your income section specifically, look for the "Financial Information" section in the review panel. Common errors include entering cents (don't use decimal points), inputting commas, or entering retirement account values incorrectly. If this doesn't work, try clearing your browser cache or using a different browser altogether. For some reason, Firefox tends to work better than Chrome for the FAFSA site.

•This step-by-step guide is incredibly helpful! I found the section I needed to edit and fixed my errors. You were right about the decimal points - I had included cents in several dollar amounts and that was causing issues. I also switched from Chrome to Firefox and the site seems to be running much more smoothly now. Thank you!

•OMG yes!!! I got disconnected 3 times after waiting forever. Then when I finally got through the guy literally told me "I don't know" and transferred me to another department that never picked up!!

•Hey, I was having the same issue getting through to FSA last month when I needed help with verification. Someone on another forum recommended using Claimyr.com to connect with FSA agents without the wait. It actually worked - they got me connected in about 10 minutes when I had been trying for days. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ I was skeptical at first but it saved me from having to keep calling and getting disconnected. Might be worth checking out if you still need to talk to someone at FSA.

I think there's some confusion in the replies. The correct way to edit a saved FAFSA depends on whether you're the student or the parent contributor. If you logged in with your FSA ID as a parent: 1. Go to https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid 2. Click on "Start or Complete Aid Application" 3. Select "Fill Out Parent Portion" 4. Enter the student's information 5. On the next screen, you should see an option for "Make Corrections" if the form is partially completed The Delete option is only available to the student, not to parent contributors. Parents cannot delete the application, only students can with their own FSA ID. Also, heads up - the new FAFSA uses the term SAI (Student Aid Index) instead of EFC now, so any guides from before 2024 might use outdated terminology.

•This actually explains why I couldn't find the delete option! I'm logged in with my parent FSA ID, not my daughter's student account. I'll stick with editing since that's working now. And thanks for the heads up about SAI vs EFC - I'd been confused by that terminology change too.

•Wait, so if I'm helping my son with his FAFSA and I need to delete something, I have to use HIS account? That's so confusing! Why would they design it that way? I thought once I had parent access I could make any changes needed... no wonder we're all struggling with this system.

Just a tip - take screenshots of EVERYTHING as you go through the FAFSA. I learned this the hard way. Their system glitched on me twice and I lost information. Having screenshots saved me from having to guess what I had entered previously.

If you're specifically having issues with the income section, make sure you're entering the correct tax year information. The 2025-2026 FAFSA requires 2023 tax information, not 2024. Many parents make this mistake and need to edit their applications. Also, remember these key points: • Don't include retirement accounts (401k, IRA) in the asset section • Home equity in your primary residence is NOT reported • Use AGI from line 11 of your 1040 tax form • Report untaxed income correctly (this trips up many parents) If you do need to speak with FSA again, call early in the morning (right when they open) or try midweek which tends to have shorter wait times.

•You're absolutely right - I had included some retirement account values that shouldn't have been there. That's exactly what I needed to fix. I also double-checked my AGI from line 11 as you suggested and found another discrepancy. Thanks for these specific points - they were exactly what I needed!

Did you solve this? I'm having the same issues with my son's FAFSA right now. I noticed some fields are grayed out after you save them the first time, which seemed strange to me. Is that what you're experiencing too? I wonder if certain sections lock after completion while others remain editable.

Zoe Papadopoulos
•Yes, I was able to solve it! The FAFSA Review sidebar menu was the key - it lets you jump to any section. I did notice some fields were grayed out, but when I clicked the "Edit" button at the bottom of those sections, they became editable again. Hope that helps with your son's application!

•Thank you! I'll try that right now. This whole process has been so much more complicated than when I filled out FAFSA years ago for my older daughter. All these changes to the system are not user-friendly at all.

Glad you found the solution! One additional thing to keep in mind: if your family situation is complex (self-employment, farm income, multiple properties, etc.), you might want to save the partially completed form and consult with your child's school financial aid office before final submission. Many colleges offer free FAFSA review services where they can look for common errors before you submit. This can prevent having to do corrections later, which can delay your SAI calculation and potentially affect aid packages.

•That's excellent advice. We do have some self-employment income that I was unsure how to report correctly. I'll reach out to the university's financial aid office to see if they can review it before we submit. I definitely don't want to delay the SAI calculation since that could affect my daughter's aid package. Thank you!

I'm so glad to see this thread because I'm currently stuck in the exact same situation! My daughter and I started her 2025-2026 FAFSA last week and I made several mistakes in the parent financial section. I've been trying to figure out how to go back and edit those sections for days. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful - especially the detailed steps about using the FAFSA Review sidebar and the tips about not including decimal points or retirement accounts. I'm going to try these solutions right now. It's frustrating that the FAFSA helpline seems so unreliable, but I'm grateful for this community sharing their experiences and actual working solutions. Thank you everyone for taking the time to help fellow parents navigate this confusing system!

•Welcome to the FAFSA struggle club! I'm so glad this thread helped you too. The detailed step-by-step instructions from other community members here literally saved my sanity. I was about to give up entirely before finding the FAFSA Review sidebar option. Just a heads up - when you're making your corrections, double-check that you're using 2023 tax info (not 2024) and definitely switch to Firefox if you're using Chrome. The site seems to work much better in Firefox. Also, take screenshots as you go like someone mentioned - I wish I had done that from the beginning! Good luck with your daughter's application and feel free to ask if you run into any other roadblocks. This community has been amazing at helping each other through this process.

I'm dealing with a similar situation right now with my son's FAFSA application. After reading through all these responses, I'm feeling much more confident about being able to fix the errors I made. The step-by-step instructions for using the FAFSA Review sidebar are exactly what I needed - I had no idea that feature existed! I've been clicking around the main navigation for hours without finding it. One thing I want to add for other parents who might be reading this: if you're like me and made errors in multiple sections, don't panic. From what I'm understanding here, you can edit each section individually through the review panel without having to start completely over. That's a huge relief because I spent so much time on the sections I got right. Has anyone had experience with how long it takes for changes to save properly? I'm worried about making edits and then having them disappear due to system issues that others have mentioned.

•Hey Omar! I just went through this exact process yesterday and can answer your question about saving changes. Each time you make an edit in a section and click "Save" at the bottom, the system immediately shows a confirmation message like "Changes saved successfully" or something similar. The edits appear to save right away - I didn't experience any delays or lost changes. Just make sure you're clicking the "Save" button at the bottom of each section before moving to the next one. Also, I'd recommend doing one section at a time rather than jumping around between multiple sections, just to be safe. The system seems to handle it better that way. You're absolutely right that being able to edit individual sections without starting over is a lifesaver - I was in the same boat with multiple errors but most of my application was correct. Good luck with your son's application!

•Welcome to the community, Paolo! I completely understand your frustration - I just went through this exact same situation with my daughter's FAFSA a few days ago. This thread has been an absolute lifesaver for so many of us dealing with the same editing nightmare! The FAFSA Review sidebar method really does work perfectly. Just to add to the great advice already given here: when you log in and find that sidebar, you'll see all your sections listed with completion status indicators. The ones you need to edit will be clearly marked, and you can click directly on any section title to jump right to it. One additional tip that helped me - after you make your corrections in each section, scroll all the way to the bottom and look for both a "Save" button AND a "Save and Continue" button. I found that using "Save and Continue" seemed to work more reliably than just "Save" alone. Also, give the page a few seconds to process after clicking before moving to the next section. You're so right about the helpline being unreliable - it's honestly shameful that parents have to rely on community forums like this to get actual working solutions. But thankfully this community is amazing! You've got this, and don't hesitate to come back here if you hit any other roadblocks.
