Filled out 2023-2024 FAFSA instead of 2024-2025 - How do I fix my application?

I totally messed up my FAFSA application! I just realized I filled out the 2023-2024 form instead of the 2024-2025 form that I actually need for next fall. When I try logging back into studentaid.gov it won't let me create a new application for the correct year - it just shows my completed 2023-2024 form. Has anyone else made this mistake? How do I fix this without starting a whole new FSA ID? I need to get my SAI score for scholarship applications due next month and I'm seriously freaking out right now!

Don't panic! This happens more often than you'd think. You don't need a new FSA ID - you can have multiple FAFSA applications for different award years under the same account. When you log into studentaid.gov, look for the "Start a 2024-2025 FAFSA Form" option on your dashboard. It should be available as a separate application. The system allows you to have applications for multiple years active simultaneously.

Thank you so much!! I just checked and you're right - there's an option for the new year that I completely missed. Should I also cancel my 2023-2024 application since I don't actually need it? Or will having both cause problems with my financial aid package?

same thing hapenned to me last semester!! was SO confusing. had to call the financial aid office at my school and they helped me figure it out. def do the new application asap!!!

This is why the FAFSA system needs a complete overhaul!! It's DESIGNED to be confusing! They make these forms impossible to understand and then penalize students who make honest mistakes. I filled out THREE YEARS of wrong forms before someone told me I was using outdated applications. Cost me thousands in missed grants!!!

To directly answer your question: You need to complete a new FAFSA application for the 2024-2025 award year while logged into your existing FSA ID account. The previously completed 2023-2024 form will remain in the system, but it won't impact your new application. Regarding whether you should cancel the incorrect application: If you're not currently enrolled in school for the 2023-2024 year, you can leave it as is or contact your school's financial aid office to ensure they don't process it. If you are enrolled for 2023-2024 but have already received aid, no action is needed on the older form. Make sure when completing the new form that you're using the correct tax information year as well. For the 2024-2025 FAFSA, you'll need 2022 tax information (not 2023).

Thank you for such a detailed explanation. I'm currently in my gap year, so I don't need the 2023-2024 form at all. I'll definitely make sure I'm using 2022 tax info for the correct form. Do you know approximately how long it takes to get the SAI score after submitting? My scholarship deadlines are approaching fast.

Trying to contact anyone at Federal Student Aid about this is a NIGHTMARE. I made the same mistake last year and spent THREE WEEKS trying to get through to someone. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual FAFSA agent in under 30 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent was able to verify both my applications were in the system correctly and explained exactly what I needed to do. Saved me so much stress during a time when I couldn't afford to miss deadlines.

Ugh, I'm in the exact same boat! Just realized I filled out last year's form too. Question though - will filling out the old FAFSA mess up my current financial aid? I'm already getting funds for this semester and don't want to screw anything up by submitting a new form...

Completing a FAFSA for 2024-2025 won't affect your current 2023-2024 aid package. They're processed separately. Just make sure when you complete the new form you're using the right tax year information and carefully review before submitting to avoid further complications.

When i started college my mom filled out my fafsa forms for all 4 years and labeled a folder for each one lol but now im in grad school and had to learn all this myself. the whole system is way too complicated. my suggestion is to just make a spreadsheet to track which form is for which year, when you submitted, status etc. helps me keep everything straight especially with scholarships having different deadlines.

The spreadsheet idea is brilliant! I'm definitely going to do that since I'll need to keep track of this for the next 4 years. I wish they'd just make the interface more user-friendly in the first place though.

To answer your question about timing - typically you'll receive your SAI (Student Aid Index) score within 3-5 business days after submitting your FAFSA, assuming there are no errors or issues requiring verification. However, with the recent FAFSA Simplification Act changes, some applications are taking longer to process this year - up to 2 weeks in some cases. For your scholarship applications, I'd recommend two things: 1. Submit your correct 2024-2025 FAFSA immediately 2. Contact the scholarship providers to explain the situation and ask if they'll accept pending FAFSA status with follow-up documentation when you receive it Many scholarship providers understand these issues and will work with you as long as you're proactive about communication.

Just submitted the correct form! I'll definitely reach out to the scholarship providers tomorrow. I'm hoping since their deadlines are still about 3 weeks away, I'll have my SAI by then. Thanks for all your help - this community has been amazing.
