Can I get FAFSA aid if I select 'none of the above' for foreign high school? Urgent with July 3rd classes

I'm stressing out because my classes start July 3rd and I've hit a roadblock with my FAFSA application. I completed my high school in another country, and when filling out the FAFSA, there was no option to list my foreign high school. My college financial aid office told me I have two options: either make corrections to my FAFSA or they can waive the high school requirement. The problem is I selected 'none of the above' for high school, and now my application is going through verification which seems to be taking FOREVER. The FAFSA website is showing maintenance for corrections today which makes everything worse. Does anyone know: 1. Will I still qualify for financial aid with 'none of the above' selected for high school? 2. How long do FAFSA corrections typically take to process right now? 3. Is there any way to speed this up since my classes start so soon? I'm worried I'll lose my financial aid and won't be able to start classes next week. Help!

i had this exact problem last year!! the fafsa system is so stupid when it comes to international schools. i selected "none of the above" and still got my aid but it took like 3 extra weeks for processing 😩 you should call them ASAP to explain ur situation

3 extra weeks?! I don't have that kind of time with classes starting next week. Did you do anything specific to speed up the process?

You should be eligible for aid with 'none of the above' selected - this is a common issue for international students. The key is getting your verification processed quickly. FAFSA maintenance can last 24-48 hours, but corrections typically process in 3-5 business days in normal circumstances. Since your classes start July 3rd, I recommend: 1. Contact your school's financial aid office TOMORROW asking if they can process a provisional financial aid package while verification completes 2. Bring documentation of your foreign high school completion for them to review 3. Ask if they can put an urgent flag on your verification Many schools have contingency plans for these timing issues.

Thank you! I'll contact my financial aid office tomorrow morning. Do you know if I can submit my high school documentation directly to them rather than through FAFSA?

None of the' above for high school will not automatically disqualify you from aid, but it does trigger verification which'we re seeing take 2-3 weeks currently. Since your school offered to waive the high school requirement,'that s likely your fastest option. I would recommend: 1. Get written confirmation from your school about this waiver 2. Ask them to proceed with your financial aid package using this waiver 3. Follow up with documentation of your foreign high school directly to your college The FAFSA correction system should be back online within 24 hours, but even expedited corrections are taking 7-10 days minimum right now due to the new FAFSArollout.

Thank you for the detailed answer! I'll get the waiver in writing ASAP. Do you know if this waiver might cause any issues with my aid amount or loan eligibility down the road?

Ive been dealing with FAFSA for 5 years (two kids in college) and let me tell you something - calling them directly is the ONLY way to get anything fixed quickly. I spent 3 weeks trying to fix my daughters verification stuff through the website and emails and got NOWHERE. then i found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual FAFSA agent in about 20 min instead of waiting on hold for hours. they have a video demo here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ the agent fixed everything in one call and told us exactly what to do about her foreign study program. worth it for the stress relief alone!

does that service actually work? i tried calling fafsa directly last week and gave up after being on hold for 2 hours 😤

Yes it really worked! I was skeptical but desperate. The agent even helped us figure out why her foreign education credits weren't being processed correctly.

Thank you for the recommendation! I'm going to try calling my school's financial aid office first thing tomorrow, but if I can't get anywhere with them, I'll definitely try this. At this point I'm desperate to get this resolved before classes start.

you might be overthinking this whole thing tbh. i didnt even graduate high school (got my GED) and i still got full financial aid. as long as your school is cool with it you should be fine. the verification stuff is annoying but your school can probably start processing your aid with a temporary status while the fafsa gets fixed.

This is NOT accurate information. A GED is recognized as an educational credential by FAFSA and is completely different from selecting "none of the above" with a foreign credential that hasn't been documented. Please don't spread misinformation that could affect someone's financial aid.

i was just trying to help, geez. my point was the school has a lot of power to make exceptions if they want to, especially with the waiver thing they mentioned

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm definitely hoping my school can process something temporarily while this gets sorted out.

I work in higher ed and deal with this issue frequently. Here's what you need to know: 1. FAFSA maintenance periods typically end within 24 hours, but sometimes extend to 48 hours during major updates. 2. The actual problem isn't selecting "none of the above" - it's that this selection triggers verification, which is currently taking 2-3 weeks due to the new FAFSA rollout. 3. Your school offering a waiver is EXCELLENT news. This means they can process your aid package using their institutional authority to waive the high school requirement verification. 4. You should immediately email your financial aid office requesting: - Written confirmation of the high school verification waiver - Request for a provisional aid package based on this waiver - Timeline for when you can expect your aid to disburse 5. Foreign high school credentials are perfectly valid for financial aid eligibility, but the FAFSA form simply doesn't handle them well. Your school's waiver is likely your fastest path to getting aid processed before July 3rd.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I'll email my financial aid office right now requesting exactly these things. This makes me feel much better about the waiver option.

same thing happend to my roomate last semester!!!! he's from colombia and fafsa was a NIGHTMARE for him. his finacial aid didnt come through until 3 weeks after classes started but the school gave him some kind of emergency loan to cover until then. ask ur school about emergency funding options!!!!

That's a great suggestion! I didn't even know emergency loans were an option. I'll definitely ask about that when I talk to them tomorrow.

Update: Just checked the FSA website and today's maintenance is scheduled to end at midnight Eastern time. So you should be able to make corrections tomorrow. However, I still recommend pursuing the school waiver as your fastest option, as FAFSA corrections are taking 7-10 days minimum to process right now.

Thank you for checking! That's helpful to know. I think I'll pursue both routes simultaneously - get the waiver from my school while also submitting the correction once the system is back up.
