I was worried about the same thing! But I've logged in like 50 times (I'm obsessive lol) and my application has processed normally. Got my SAI calculation after about 3 weeks. Just don't click on any "edit" or "update" buttons while you're in there if you're worried!
Does anyone else think it's RIDICULOUS that we're all scared to even check our applications? The whole FAFSA system is such a disaster this year. My son's college financial aid office told us they're seeing TONS of students with unexplained corrections and delays. They actually advised us not to touch the application unless absolutely necessary!
It's definitely been a challenging rollout with the FAFSA Simplification Act changes. While I understand the caution, official FSA guidance doesn't support the "don't log in" approach. The issues are related to system processing, not user logins. Your son's school is likely being cautious due to the high volume of problems they're seeing.
THIS WHOLE SYSTEM IS RIDICULOUS!!!! They make it SO HARD to just get money for school that we're ELIGIBLE for!!! My daughter had same problem and we ended up having to DRIVE TWO HOURS to a FAFSA help event at a community college just to get help with the stupid contributor signature!!! The whole system is designed to PREVENT people from getting aid!!!!!
UPDATE: Success! I used Claimyr to get through to a FAFSA agent this morning and they were super helpful. Turns out my stepdad's SSN was entered with a transposed digit in the original FSA ID creation. The agent helped us correct it and verify his identity on the spot! No paper form needed after all. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!
Update on private loan fraud cases: Several states (CA, MA, NY, IL, PA) have reached settlements with private lenders over loans connected to fraudulent schools. These settlements included loan forgiveness for many borrowers. Florida hasn't been as aggressive in this area, but you should definitely contact your state AG about whether your school is under investigation. Also - Florida has the Consumer Collection Practices Act which gives you additional protections beyond federal law. If they're calling repeatedly or making threats, document everything and report them.
Has ne1 tried those debt settlement companies?? My cousin used one for his private school loans and they got it reduced by 40% but im not sure if they work for everyone or if its a scam
Be extremely cautious with debt settlement companies. While legitimate ones exist, the industry is filled with predatory practices. Many charge high fees and direct you to stop paying loans (damaging your credit) while they supposedly negotiate. This damages your credit significantly. If you're genuinely unable to pay, you're often better off negotiating directly with the lender or working with a nonprofit credit counseling agency approved by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling.
So wait, is it normal to get your SAI score but not hear from schools yet? I got my SAI calculation like 3 weeks ago (really confused by the number tbh, seems way higher than what my family can pay???) but haven't heard from ANY schools. I'm so stressed I can't even sleep. My parents keep asking me where I'm going but I DON'T KNOW because I have no idea what we can afford!!!!
Yes, that's completely normal. Your SAI (Student Aid Index) is calculated directly from your FAFSA data by the federal system. Schools then use that SAI number, along with their own financial aid policies and available funds, to create your specific aid package. The SAI is just one component of how schools determine your aid - each school might offer very different packages even with the same SAI number. The timeframe between receiving your SAI and getting aid offers varies widely by school.

•Yes, you can make corrections to your FAFSA after submitting. Log in to studentaid.gov with your FSA ID, select your FAFSA application, and click on 'Make FAFSA Corrections.' You can update most information except your Social Security Number. After submitting corrections, it takes about 3-5 days to process. However, some changes (like dependency status) might require documentation through your school's financial aid office.

One final tip - since you mentioned nursing specifically, be sure to carefully answer the question about interest in federal TEACH grants. These aren't relevant for nursing programs and selecting 'yes' by mistake can cause confusion in your aid package. Also, once you submit your FAFSA, immediately contact your school's financial aid office to let them know you're a returning student. Sometimes they can flag your file for special consideration or point you toward additional nursing-specific campus scholarships that don't appear in the general application process. Good luck with your nursing program!

•Thank you! I'll definitely avoid the TEACH grant question. I'm going to call the financial aid office tomorrow to introduce myself. Just hoping I can get everything submitted correctly. Still nervous but feeling much more prepared now!
