Will reporting my part-time job ended cause ESD benefit delays? Worried about next weekly claim
Just found out my part-time job is ending this week (the position is being eliminated completely). I've been claiming partial unemployment while working this job, but now I'll be fully unemployed again. I'm really stressed about my weekly claim tomorrow - when it asks if I'll be working for the same employer next week, I'll have to say no. Will this trigger some kind of review that delays my benefits? I really can't afford any payment gaps right now. Also, does anyone know if my current benefit year will be extended now that I'm fully unemployed again? I was only getting partial payments while working part-time, so I still have a decent balance showing in my account. Thanks for any help!

when u say no to the question about working for the same employer it will probly trigger adjudication cuz ESD needs to figure out why you're not working there anymore. Be ready to wait atleast a few weeks for them to review it. happens to everyone

•Oh no, that's exactly what I was afraid of! I can't go weeks without money. Do you know if there's any way to avoid the adjudication? The company eliminated my position, it wasn't my fault.

Just to clarify some misinformation: saying your job ended doesn't automatically trigger adjudication. When you file your weekly claim, ESD will ask why you're no longer working there. Select "laid off/lack of work" since your position was eliminated. As long as you weren't fired for misconduct or quit voluntarily, it shouldn't create a delay. Regarding your benefit year - it doesn't get "extended" because you're fully unemployed again. Your benefit year lasts for 12 months from when you first applied, and you have a maximum benefit amount. If you haven't used all your benefits, you'll just start receiving full weekly benefits instead of partial ones until either your benefit year ends or you exhaust your maximum benefit amount.

•Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! That makes me feel better. So I should be able to just keep filing weekly like normal? And yeah, I definitely wasn't fired - they just eliminated the position completely.

this happened to my cousin last month his part time ended and ESD still flagged his account for review even tho he selected lay off. took like 3 weeks to fix!!!

•That can happen if there's any discrepancy between what the claimant reports and what the employer reports. It's important that both match to avoid issues. The employer has 10 days to respond to ESD when employment ends.

Make sure you keep really good documentation about why your position ended. Ask your employer for something in writing if possible. I got stuck in adjudication for SIX WEEKS last year because my employer reported I quit but I reported layoff (they basically forced me to quit by eliminating hours). ESD is so frustrating to deal with!!!!!

•That's smart advice, thanks. I'll email my manager today and ask for something in writing about the position being eliminated. I seriously hope I don't end up in adjudication - I can't believe they made you wait six weeks!

If you do get stuck in adjudication and need to reach ESD urgently, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was in a similar situation last month - stuck in adjudication after my seasonal job ended - and couldn't get through to anyone at ESD. Claimyr got me connected to an ESD agent within 30 minutes instead of spending days redialing. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 I was able to explain my situation to the agent, and they cleared the hold on my account that same day. Just something to keep in your back pocket if you do end up with payment delays.

•Thanks for the tip! I've never heard of Claimyr before but I'll definitely look into it if I run into problems. The video looks helpful. Hoping I won't need it, but good to know there's an option if I get stuck.

I went thru this in January! Just make sure when it asks for separation reason you pick "laid off" not "job ended" - they sound similar but ESD treats them differently. Job ended sometimes makes them think contract work. Laid off is clearer for position elimination. Good luck!!

•Oh that's a really good distinction I wouldn't have thought about. I'll definitely select "laid off" then. Did your benefits continue without interruption when you did that?

•Yep! No interruption for me. Got paid on time same as always.

Everyone's giving advice but nobody answered your question about extensions. Your benefit year doesn't get "extended" automatically when a part-time job ends. You get the same benefit year (52 weeks from initial claim). What changes is you'll now receive your full weekly benefit amount instead of the partial amount you were getting while working part-time. If you exhaust all benefits before your benefit year ends, that's when extension programs might come into play, but those are rare now (unlike during COVID). Standard UI is capped at 26 weeks of benefits within your 52-week benefit year, regardless of whether those are full or partial payments.

•Thank you for addressing that part of my question! That makes sense. So basically I'll just go back to getting my full weekly amount until either my benefit year ends or I use up all 26 weeks of benefits (whichever comes first). I appreciate the clarification.

one more thing make sure u keep doing ur job search activities!!! now that ur fully unemployed u need to do all 3 job contacts every week. ESD is super strict about that

•Good reminder! I was still doing the 3 job search activities even with my part-time job (my WorkSource advisor told me I had to), but it's definitely important to keep up with those.

Final tip: After you submit your weekly claim with the job separation, call ESD within 2-3 business days to confirm everything looks good on their end. This proactive approach can save you weeks of waiting if there is an issue. The earlier you catch any potential problems, the faster they can be resolved. You'll want to have your separation details and last day of work ready when you call.
