Why would I not be eligible for Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I just got laid off from my job after 2 years and when I tried to file for unemployment, I'm seeing all these eligibility requirements that are confusing me. I worked full-time making $18/hour at a warehouse but I'm worried there might be something that disqualifies me. What are the main reasons people get denied for Washington ESD benefits? I don't want to waste time filing if I'm not going to qualify anyway.

The main eligibility requirements for Washington ESD are: you must have worked and earned wages in Washington state, you must be unemployed through no fault of your own, you must be able and available for work, and you must be actively seeking work. Since you were laid off and worked for 2 years, you should meet most of these requirements.

•That sounds like I should qualify then. I was definitely laid off due to company downsizing, not fired for cause.

•Don't forget you also need to have earned enough wages during your base period. For most people that's the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file.

Common reasons people get denied: quit without good cause, fired for misconduct, not available for work, not actively job searching, or didn't earn enough wages. If you were laid off from a regular job, you're probably fine.

•What counts as 'enough wages'? I made about $37,000 last year working full time.

•That should definitely be enough. You need wages in at least 2 quarters of your base period and total wages of at least $3,850 in your base period.

I was in a similar situation last year and had trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check my eligibility. Ended up using Claimyr.com to get connected to an agent who walked me through everything. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made the whole process so much easier than trying to call on my own.

•Never heard of that service. Is it legit?

•Yeah it's real. They just help you get through to an actual Washington ESD agent instead of sitting on hold forever. I was able to get my questions answered and file my claim properly.

•That might be helpful. I've been dreading trying to call Washington ESD directly.

Be careful about the job search requirements! You have to be actively looking for work and register with WorkSource Washington. Some people think they can just collect benefits without job searching and that will disqualify you.

•How many jobs do I need to apply for each week?

Miguel Diaz
•You need to make 3 job search activities per week and keep a detailed log. This can include applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking activities, etc.

ugh the washington esd system is so confusing. i got denied my first time because i didnt understand the base period thing and apparently didnt work enough quarters or something

•Did you try to appeal the decision? Sometimes there are alternate base periods they can use if you don't qualify under the standard one.

Other things that can disqualify you: receiving certain types of pension payments, being enrolled in school full-time without approval, being out of the country, or having an outstanding overpayment from previous claims.

•None of those apply to me thankfully. Sounds like I should be eligible.

•What about if you're getting severance pay? Does that affect eligibility?

•Severance can delay when your benefits start but usually doesn't disqualify you completely. You need to report it when you file.

The Washington ESD website has an eligibility quiz you can take before filing. It's not 100% accurate but gives you a good idea if you'll qualify.

•I'll check that out. Thanks for the tip!

Just file already! The worst they can do is say no. I waited weeks wondering if I qualified and should have just applied right away.

•True, I guess there's no harm in trying.

•Plus if you wait too long to file, you could miss out on benefits for weeks you were eligible. There's no retroactive payments for delays in filing.

I work for a temp agency and was worried I wouldn't qualify but I did. As long as you have enough wages reported to Washington ESD, the type of employment doesn't matter much.

•That's good to know. I was a direct employee so that should be even better.

Make sure you file within the first week of being unemployed! I made the mistake of waiting and lost a week of benefits because there's a waiting week requirement.

•I was laid off on Friday so I should file this week then?

Miguel Diaz
•Yes, file as soon as possible. You can file for the week you became unemployed.

Had a friend get denied because he quit his job to move states. Even though he moved back to Washington, they said quitting without good cause disqualified him. But since you were laid off you should be fine.

•Yeah I definitely didn't quit. Company eliminated my position due to budget cuts.

If you do run into any issues with your claim or need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, definitely consider using Claimyr. I tried calling on my own for days and kept getting disconnected. With Claimyr I was talking to an agent within an hour.

•How much does that cost though?

•It's worth it to avoid the frustration of trying to get through on your own. Check out their demo video to see how it works.

WASHINGTON ESD DENIED ME FOR NO REASON!!! I worked for 3 years and they said I didn't meet the wage requirements. The whole system is broken!!!

•Did you check which quarters they used for your base period? Sometimes wages from your most recent quarter aren't counted.

Malik Jackson
•No I have no idea what base period even means. This is all so confusing.

•You should definitely appeal that decision and ask them to explain exactly why you were denied. They have to provide specific reasons.

my cousin got denied because he was working under the table at his last job and wages werent reported to washington esd properly

•My job was definitely legitimate with proper tax withholding so that shouldn't be an issue for me.

The most common reason I see people get denied is the able and available requirement. You have to be physically and mentally able to work and available for work during normal business hours.

•I'm definitely able and available. No health issues or other commitments preventing me from working.

If you have any doubts about your eligibility, you can always call and ask before filing. Though good luck getting through... when I needed help I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and it actually worked.

•Seems like several people have mentioned Claimyr. I might try that if I can't get through to Washington ESD directly.

Don't let them intimidate you with all the requirements. Most people who lose their job through no fault of their own and worked regularly will qualify. The system makes it sound more complicated than it is.

•That's reassuring. I was starting to think maybe I wouldn't qualify for some reason I didn't know about.

One thing to watch out for - if you have any side gig work or freelance income, you need to report that too. Even small amounts can affect your benefits.

Ava Rodriguez
•I don't have any side income, just my regular warehouse job that I lost.

Bottom line - if you worked regularly for 2 years and were laid off, you almost certainly qualify. Don't overthink it, just file your claim.

Just remember you'll need to certify for benefits every week and keep looking for work. The job search requirements are strictly enforced.
