When do you get unemployment checks from Washington ESD - payment schedule?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits after being laid off from my warehouse job last month. My claim status finally changed from 'adjudication in progress' to 'approved' but I'm confused about when I'll actually receive my first payment. I've been filing my weekly claims on time every Sunday but haven't seen any money hit my account yet. Does anyone know how long it takes for Washington ESD to start sending out the actual unemployment checks? I'm getting really stressed about rent being due next week.

Usually takes about 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim for the payment to show up in your account. Make sure you're checking both your bank account and the payment history section on your Washington ESD account to see if it's been processed.

•I checked my payment history and it just shows 'pending' for last week's claim. Does that mean it's still processing?

Anita George
•Yeah pending usually means it's in the system but hasn't been released yet. Should update within the next day or two.

In my experience, the first payment always takes longer than the regular ones. I think it took almost a week for my first check to come through after approval, but after that it was pretty consistent - usually got paid by Tuesday or Wednesday if I filed my weekly claim on Sunday.

•That's reassuring to hear. I was starting to worry something went wrong with my claim.

•First payments can definitely be delayed while they verify everything is set up correctly in the system.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for three weeks about my payment delays and can never get through! The phone system is absolutely terrible. Anyone else having trouble reaching them?

•Oh man, I found this service called Claimyr that actually helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It's way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•Really? That sounds too good to be true. How does it work exactly?

•They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an actual agent picks up. Saved me so much time and frustration.

Make sure you're filing by the deadline each week! If you miss the Sunday deadline, it can delay your payment or you might lose that week entirely. Washington ESD is pretty strict about the weekly claim filing schedule.

•I've been filing every Sunday morning, so that shouldn't be the issue. Thanks for the reminder though!

•wait i thought the deadline was monday?? ive been filing monday mornings this whole time

•You need to file by 11:59 PM on Sunday for the previous week. Monday might still work but you're cutting it close and risking delays.

The payment schedule depends on when you file and if there are any issues with your claim. Regular weekly payments are typically processed Monday-Tuesday and arrive by Wednesday for most banks. However, if Washington ESD needs to verify your job search activities or if there's any flag on your account, it can delay the payment.

•I've been logging all my job search activities in WorkSourceWA like they require. Could that be causing a delay?
0 coins
Logan Chiang
•Probably not, but sometimes they do random audits of job search logs which can temporarily hold up payments. It usually resolves within a few days.

ugh the whole system is so slow. took me 6 weeks to get my first payment last year even though my claim was approved. washington esd is just understaffed and behind on everything

•Six weeks?? That's terrifying. I really can't wait that long.

•That seems extreme. Most people I know get their first payment within a week of approval unless there's a specific issue.

Are you signed up for direct deposit? That's usually the fastest way to get your unemployment payments. If you're waiting for a physical check in the mail, that adds several more days to the process.

Austin Leonard
•Yes, I set up direct deposit when I first applied. My bank info shows correctly in my Washington ESD account.

•Good, that should speed things up. Physical checks can take up to 10 business days to arrive.

I remember when I first got on unemployment, I was checking my bank account like every hour waiting for that first payment lol. The waiting is the worst part, but once it starts coming regularly it's much less stressful.

If your payment doesn't show up by Thursday, I'd definitely try to contact Washington ESD. When I had payment issues, using Claimyr made it so much easier to actually speak with someone instead of getting stuck in their phone system maze.

•I might have to try that if nothing comes through this week. Thanks for the tip!

•I was skeptical about services like that but honestly anything is better than trying to call Washington ESD directly. Their phone system is designed to make you give up.

check your spam folder too!! sometimes the payment notifications from washington esd end up there and you might miss them

Austin Leonard
•Good point, I'll check that. I haven't been getting any email notifications at all actually.

•yeah definitely check your email settings in your account. you want to make sure you're getting all the notifications about payments and claim status

One thing to keep in mind is that Washington ESD processes payments in batches. If you filed your weekly claim early Sunday morning, you might be in the first batch and get paid Tuesday. If you filed later in the day, you might be in the Wednesday batch. It's not a huge difference but can explain some variation in timing.

Austin Leonard
•I usually file around 8 AM on Sunday, so hopefully that puts me in the earlier batch.

Daniel Rivera
•I never knew they did batches! That explains why my payments sometimes come Tuesday and sometimes Wednesday.

The waiting is horrible but hang in there. Once Washington ESD gets into their rhythm with your claim, the payments become very predictable. I've been getting mine every Tuesday like clockwork for the past two months.

•That's what I'm hoping for - just want to get past this initial uncertainty phase.

•Exactly, the first few payments are always nerve-wracking but then it becomes routine.

Make sure your address is correct in the system too. I had a friend whose payments got delayed because there was a typo in his address that messed up the direct deposit setup somehow.

•I double-checked everything when I set up the account, but I'll verify again just to be safe.

•Yeah it's worth confirming. Sometimes even small things like abbreviating 'Street' vs writing it out can cause hiccups.

Update on my calling situation - I tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned and actually got through to Washington ESD in about 20 minutes instead of the usual hours of busy signals. They confirmed my payment should process tomorrow. Definitely worth it if you need to talk to someone quickly.

•That's great to hear! I'm definitely keeping that option in mind if I don't see my payment by Thursday.

•20 minutes is amazing compared to the 3+ hour waits I usually deal with when calling Washington ESD directly.

just wanted to add that if you're getting any kind of partial unemployment or if you worked any hours during the week you're claiming, that can sometimes slow down the payment processing while they calculate the exact amount you should receive
0 coins
Austin Leonard
•I haven't worked any hours since I was laid off, so that shouldn't be an issue for me.

Brady Clean
•good that should keep things simple then. partial claims definitely add processing time

The anxiety of waiting for that first unemployment check is so real. I remember living off ramen and checking my account balance obsessively. It does get better once the payments start flowing regularly!

If it helps ease your mind, Washington ESD has gotten much better about payment timing over the past year. The system used to be way more unpredictable, but most people I know are getting their payments within 2-3 days of filing their weekly claims now.

Austin Leonard
•That's reassuring to hear. Hopefully my experience will be similarly smooth once things get rolling.

•Yeah they definitely improved the processing times. Still not perfect but way better than it used to be.

Pro tip: set up account alerts with your bank so you get notified immediately when any deposit hits your account. That way you don't have to obsessively check the app and you'll know right away when your unemployment payment comes through.

Austin Leonard
•Great idea! I just set up text alerts for any deposits over $100. That should catch the unemployment payments.

•Smart move. Those alerts are a lifesaver when you're waiting for important payments.

Hope your payment comes through soon! The waiting game is the worst part of the whole unemployment process. Once you get into the routine of filing weekly and receiving regular payments, it becomes much less stressful.
