When do you become eligible for unemployment benefits in Washington state?
I'm trying to figure out the exact requirements for getting unemployment benefits here in Washington. My job ended two weeks ago and I've been putting off filing because I'm not sure if I qualify yet. Do you have to work a certain number of hours or earn a specific amount before you're eligible? Also heard something about a waiting period - is that still a thing? Really need to get this figured out since my savings are running low.

You need to have earned wages in at least two quarters during your base period, which is typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file. The minimum is around $3,800 in your highest quarter and total wages of at least $4,800 during the entire base period. There's no waiting week anymore - they eliminated that a few years ago.

•Thanks! What counts as wages though? I had some freelance work mixed in with my regular job.

•Only wages where unemployment taxes were paid count toward your base period. Freelance work usually doesn't unless you were paying into the system as self-employed.

Don't wait to file if you think you might qualify! Even if there are issues with your claim, it's better to get the process started. The Washington ESD can take forever to process things.

•Good point. I'll probably file this weekend then.

I had trouble reaching anyone at Washington ESD when I had questions about eligibility last year. Kept getting busy signals and when I did get through, I'd get disconnected. Eventually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to actual agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Never heard of that before. Did it actually work for you?

•Yeah, got connected within like 20 minutes instead of spending all day redialing. They explained my wage requirements clearly.

You also have to be unemployed through no fault of your own. If you quit or got fired for misconduct, you might not qualify right away or at all.

•My position was eliminated due to budget cuts, so that should be fine.

•Perfect, that's definitely qualifying separation. You should be good to go.

ugh the whole system is so confusing. why can't they just make this stuff simple???

•I know it seems complicated but once you understand the basics it's not too bad. The wage requirements are pretty standard across most states.

One more thing - you need to be able and available for work, and actively seeking employment. That means registering with WorkSource Washington and doing job search activities each week you claim benefits.

•How many jobs do you have to apply for each week?
0 coins
Sofia Torres
•It's 3 job search activities per week, but it doesn't have to be just applications. Can include networking, job fairs, training, etc.

•They're pretty strict about the job search thing now. Keep good records of everything you do.

Also make sure you have all your employment history ready when you file. They'll need employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation for every job in the last 18 months.

•Good to know. I'll gather all that info before I start the application.

My cousin applied and it took like 6 weeks to get approved because they had to verify her wages. Start early!

•Yikes, 6 weeks? That's a long time to wait for money.

•That's unusual. Most claims are processed within 2-3 weeks unless there's an issue that requires adjudication.

What if you worked in another state before moving to Washington? Do those wages count?

Sofia Torres
•Yes, you can combine wages from other states. You'll need to file an interstate claim and Washington ESD will contact the other state to get your wage information.

•That's helpful! I moved here from Oregon about 8 months ago.

Just wanted to add that if anyone runs into issues getting through to Washington ESD for eligibility questions, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but it beats spending hours on hold.

•How much does something like that cost though?

•Not sure about exact pricing but it was worth it to actually talk to someone who could answer my questions properly.

Don't forget you can't collect unemployment if you're receiving other benefits like workers comp or pension payments. There might be offsets.

•Good point. I'm not getting anything else right now so should be clear.

The Washington ESD website has a good eligibility quiz that can help you figure out if you qualify before you file. Might be worth checking out.

•I'll look for that. Thanks for the tip!

•It's under the 'Am I Eligible' section. Pretty straightforward questions.

anyone else think its weird that you have to prove you're looking for work when you literally just lost your job? like obviously im looking

•I get the frustration but the job search requirement makes sure benefits go to people who are actually trying to get back to work vs just collecting.

•i guess that makes sense but still feels like extra hoops to jump through

One last thing for the OP - when you do file, make sure to file for the week you became unemployed, not the week you're actually filing. You can backdate your claim but it's easier to get it right from the start.

•So I should put the date my last day of work was, not today's date?
0 coins
Sofia Torres
•Exactly. Your claim should start the Sunday of the week you became unemployed.

Final reminder - even if you're not sure you qualify, it doesn't hurt to apply. Worst case they say no, but you might be surprised. The wage requirements aren't as high as some people think.

•True. Better to try and find out for sure than just assume I don't qualify.

Good luck OP! The process seems scary at first but Washington's unemployment system is actually pretty decent once you get through the initial filing.

Hope everything works out! And remember, if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your specific situation, don't waste time on hold. That Claimyr thing really is a game changer for getting through to agents.

•I'll keep that in mind if I run into any issues. Thanks again!
