What is the max unemployment pay in Washington state right now?
I'm about to file for unemployment and trying to figure out what the maximum weekly benefit amount is in Washington. I've been making decent money and want to know if there's a cap on how much I can get. Anyone know what the current max is for 2025?

The maximum weekly benefit amount in Washington is $999 per week as of 2025. This is based on your highest earning quarter from your base period. You'll get roughly 3.85% of your highest quarter earnings, but it caps at that $999 maximum.

•Thanks! So if I made $30k in my highest quarter, I'd get about $1,155 per week but it would be capped at $999?

Yeah $999 is the max. But remember you also have to meet the minimum requirements too. You need at least 680 hours of covered employment or earn at least $7,000 in your base period to qualify at all.

•Good point, I definitely meet those minimums though. Been working full time for years.

•what if you worked part time? do you still get the same calculation?

Just went through this myself and couldn't get through to Washington ESD to confirm my benefit amount. Kept getting busy signals for weeks. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an agent who explained exactly how my benefits were calculated. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How much did that cost? I'm already stressed about money.

•It's worth checking out their site for the details, but honestly getting through to ESD is nearly impossible without help. I tried calling for 3 weeks straight.

The $999 is just the max weekly amount. Don't forget you can only collect for 26 weeks maximum in a benefit year, so the total max you could theoretically get is around $25,974. But most people don't get the full amount or full duration.

•Right, and I'd be looking for work the whole time anyway. Hopefully wouldn't need the full 26 weeks.

•26 weeks goes by faster than you think, especially in this job market

wait so the max is based on what you made in one quarter? not your annual salary?

•Correct, it's based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. The base period is typically the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file.

•that seems weird but ok. so if i made $20k in my best quarter i'd get like $770 a week?

This system is so confusing. I filed 2 weeks ago and still don't know what my weekly benefit amount will be. My claim is stuck in adjudication and I can't get any information from ESD.

•That's exactly the situation I was in. Adjudication can take forever and they won't tell you anything while it's pending. Claimyr helped me get through to find out what was holding up my claim.

•I might have to try that. This waiting is killing me financially.

Just to clarify for everyone - the $999 max applies to regular unemployment insurance (UI). If you're on standby status or have other types of claims, the calculations might be different. Also make sure you're filing your weekly claims even if your initial claim is still processing.

•What's standby status? Is that different from regular unemployment?

Sean Murphy
•Standby is when you're temporarily laid off but expect to return to the same job within a specific timeframe. The benefit calculation is the same but the job search requirements are different.

I'm getting $847 per week and I thought that was the max until I saw this thread. Now I'm wondering if ESD calculated mine wrong?

•Your benefit amount depends on your actual earnings history. If you're getting $847, that's probably correct based on your highest quarter. Not everyone gets the full $999 max.

•Oh I see, so the $999 is just the ceiling. Makes sense now.

Does anyone know if the maximum changes every year? I swear it was lower last year.

•Yes, Washington adjusts the maximum benefit amounts annually based on average wage data. It's been increasing gradually over the past few years.

•That's good to know. At least it keeps up with inflation somewhat.

Quick question - do bonuses count toward your quarterly earnings for benefit calculation? I got a big bonus last year that would bump up my highest quarter significantly.
0 coins
Ravi Kapoor
•Yes, bonuses are included in your gross wages for the quarter they were paid, not when they were earned. So if you got a 2024 bonus paid in Q1 of 2025, it would count toward that quarter.

Luca Marino
•Perfect, that should help my benefit amount then. Thanks!

Just want to add that even if you qualify for the max $999, you still have to meet all the other requirements like job search activities and reporting any work or income. Don't forget about those requirements or you could get disqualified.

Isabella Oliveira
•Good reminder. I need to make sure I understand all the job search requirements before I file.

Nia Davis
•Yeah, you need to do at least 3 job search activities per week and keep detailed records. WorkSource has good resources for this.

I've been trying to get through to ESD for days to ask about my benefit calculation and it's impossible. The phone system just hangs up on you after being on hold forever.

•Same here! I've been calling every day for two weeks. Someone mentioned Claimyr earlier - I'm seriously considering it just to get some answers.

•I looked up that Claimyr service after seeing it mentioned. Their website shows they specialize in getting through to ESD agents. Might be worth a shot.

For what it's worth, I calculated my own benefit amount using the formula (highest quarter × 0.0385) and it matched exactly what ESD determined. So if you want to estimate yours, that's the math.

Isabella Oliveira
•That's helpful! So if my highest quarter was $25,000, I'd get about $962 per week?
0 coins
CosmicCrusader
•Exactly right! And since that's under $999, you'd get the full calculated amount.

Don't forget that your benefit amount also affects how much you can earn while on unemployment. You can earn up to your weekly benefit amount minus $5 before they start reducing your benefits.
0 coins
Isabella Oliveira
•So if I get $900 per week in benefits, I could earn up to $895 in part-time work without affecting my unemployment?
0 coins
Ethan Brown
•Yes, but you still have to report ALL earnings. After that threshold, they reduce your benefits dollar for dollar.

This is all super helpful. I'm filing tomorrow and at least now I have a realistic expectation of what my benefits might be. Thanks everyone!

•Good luck with your claim! Make sure to file your weekly claims on time even if your initial claim is still processing.

•Will do! Hopefully the whole process goes smoothly.

One more thing - if you think ESD calculated your benefit amount incorrectly, you can appeal the determination. You have 30 days from when they mail you the decision.

Isabella Oliveira
•Good to know there's an appeal process if something goes wrong.
0 coins
Carmen Ortiz
•Yeah, but make sure you have documentation to support your appeal. They'll want proof of your earnings.

The whole system seems designed to be as confusing as possible. At least this thread cleared up a lot of questions I had about benefit amounts.
