Washington ESD unemployment maximum weekly benefit amount - what's the max?

I'm about to file for unemployment and trying to figure out what the maximum weekly benefit amount is in Washington state. I've been making good money at my tech job and want to know if there's a cap on how much I can get. Does anyone know what the max weekly benefit is for 2025? Also wondering if the maximum changes each year or stays the same.

The maximum weekly benefit amount in Washington for 2025 is $999 per week. This gets adjusted annually based on the state's average weekly wage. To qualify for the max, you need to have earned at least $74,925 in your base period (the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed).

Thanks! That's higher than I expected. Do you know if that includes the additional federal benefits or is that just the state portion?

0 coins

That's just the regular state unemployment insurance. There aren't any federal add-ons right now like there were during COVID.

wow $999 a week thats almost $4000 a month! i thought unemployment was supposed to be like $300 or something

0 coins

The amount depends on your previous earnings. Most people don't get the maximum - it's calculated as 50% of your average weekly wage up to that $999 cap.

0 coins

oh ok that makes more sense. so if i was making like $40k a year i wouldnt get nearly that much

Just a heads up - actually getting through to Washington ESD to file your claim can be a nightmare. I spent weeks trying to call them when I needed to resolve an issue with my claim. If you run into problems reaching them, there's a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

Good to know about the calling issues. Hopefully I won't need to call but it's good to have a backup plan.

0 coins

Is that Claimyr thing legit? Seems weird to pay someone to make a phone call for you.

0 coins

Yeah it's legit. They don't make the call for you - they help you get through the phone system faster. When you're dealing with adjudication issues or need to talk to someone urgently, it's worth it.

The calculation is based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. So if you had one really good quarter but the others were lower, that could affect your weekly benefit amount even if your total earnings were high.

0 coins

That's interesting. I had some stock options vest in one quarter that made it really high compared to the others. Wonder if that will help or hurt me.

0 coins

Stock options usually count as wages for unemployment purposes, so that high quarter should work in your favor for calculating your benefit amount.

don't forget you still have to do your job search requirements even if you're getting the maximum. washington requires 3 job search activities per week and you have to keep a log

0 coins

Yeah I saw that on the Washington ESD website. Do you know what counts as a job search activity?

0 coins

Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, informational interviews with employers. You can also do things like career counseling or skills assessments through WorkSourceWA.

I was getting close to the maximum when I was laid off last year. One thing to watch out for - if you have any issues with your claim that require adjudication, it can take forever to get resolved. Mine took 6 weeks because they had to verify my employment history.

0 coins

Six weeks? That's crazy long. Did you eventually get backpay for those weeks?

0 coins

Yes, once it was approved I got all the backpay. But it was stressful not knowing when it would come through.

0 coins

This is exactly why I used Claimyr when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Being able to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD made all the difference.

Just remember the maximum is before taxes. They'll withhold federal and state taxes if you choose to have them taken out, which I'd recommend so you don't get hit with a big tax bill later.

0 coins

Good point about taxes. What percentage do they typically withhold?

0 coins

10% for federal and I think around 5% for state, but you can choose different amounts or opt out completely.

0 coins

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE IT HARD TO GET YOUR BENEFITS!! They hope you'll just give up and stop filing. The maximum sounds great but good luck actually getting it without jumping through a million hoops.

0 coins

While the system can be frustrating, most people do eventually get their benefits if they're eligible. The key is staying on top of your weekly claims and responding quickly to any requests for information.

0 coins

EASY FOR YOU TO SAY! I've been fighting with them for months over a simple wage verification issue.

0 coins

The $999 max is pretty generous compared to other states. Some states cap it way lower. But like others said, most people won't hit the maximum unless they were making really good money.

0 coins

Yeah I looked it up and some states max out at like $400-500 per week. Washington seems more reasonable.

0 coins

Quick question - does severance pay affect your unemployment benefits? I'm getting a severance package and wondering if that impacts the weekly amount or delays when I can start collecting.

0 coins

Severance can affect your benefits depending on how it's paid out. If it's paid as a lump sum, it typically doesn't delay benefits. If it's paid out over time, it might be considered wages and could reduce your weekly benefit amount.

0 coins

Thanks! It's a lump sum so sounds like I should be good to file right away.

0 coins

i've been on unemployment twice and never got close to the max lol. my jobs were all retail and restaurant work so the benefits were pretty low. but hey, something is better than nothing

0 coins

Same here. I think I was getting like $350 a week when I was laid off from my restaurant job. Still helped cover some bills though.

0 coins

One more thing about the maximum - you can only collect benefits for up to 26 weeks in most cases. So even if you're getting $999/week, that's still a limited time period to find new work.

0 coins

26 weeks seems reasonable for finding a new job, especially in tech. Hopefully won't need anywhere close to that long.

0 coins

In some economic situations they extend the benefit period, but right now it's the standard 26 weeks in Washington.

0 coins

Pro tip: file your claim as soon as possible after you become unemployed. There's a one-week waiting period, and benefits are only paid from the date you file, not from when you actually lost your job.

0 coins

Good to know! I'm not unemployed yet but my company announced layoffs so I'm preparing just in case.

0 coins

Smart to prepare ahead of time. Having all your employment history and wage information ready will make filing much smoother.

0 coins

Does anyone know if the base period calculation ever changes? Like what if your highest earnings were more than a year ago?

0 coins

Washington uses a standard base period (first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters) but there's also an alternate base period if you don't qualify under the standard one. The alternate uses the 4 most recently completed quarters.

0 coins

That's helpful to know there's a backup option if the standard base period doesn't work out.

0 coins

Just want to echo what someone said earlier about Claimyr - I was skeptical at first but it really does work. When my claim got flagged for additional review and I couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD for weeks, Claimyr got me connected to an agent in like 20 minutes. Worth every penny when you're stressed about your benefits.

0 coins

How much does it cost? And do you have to give them your personal information?

0 coins

They don't ask for personal info - you make the call yourself, they just help you navigate the phone system. Check out their video demo to see exactly how it works.

0 coins

Word of warning - make sure you report any part-time work or gig work while collecting unemployment. Even small amounts can affect your weekly benefit, and not reporting it can cause big problems later.

0 coins

Good reminder. I do some occasional consulting work so I'll need to be careful about reporting that accurately.

0 coins

Yeah, they cross-reference with tax records so they'll find out eventually if you don't report income.

0 coins

thanks for all the info everyone! this thread has been super helpful for understanding how the maximum benefits work in washington

0 coins

Agreed! Lots of good detailed information here. Feeling much more prepared now if I do end up needing to file.
