What is 602a unemployment in Washington ESD system?
I've been trying to figure out what this 602a code means on my Washington ESD unemployment claim. It showed up in my account last week and I can't find any clear explanation anywhere. My weekly claim is showing pending and there's this 602a reference but no one at Washington ESD can explain what it actually means when I try calling. Has anyone else seen this code before? I'm worried it's going to delay my benefits.

I think 602a might be related to wage verification issues? I had something similar last year but it was a different code. Did you work for multiple employers recently?

•Yes I worked for three different employers in the last 18 months. Two were W-2 jobs and one was contract work. Could that be causing the issue?

•That could definitely be it. Washington ESD sometimes needs to verify wages from multiple sources which can trigger these review codes.

602a typically refers to a wage and employment verification hold. It means Washington ESD is reviewing your employment history and wage records to ensure your benefit calculation is correct. This often happens when there are discrepancies between what you reported and what employers reported, or when you have complex employment situations like multiple jobs or out-of-state work.

•How long does this verification process usually take? I really need these benefits to start coming through.

•It can take anywhere from 2-6 weeks depending on how quickly employers respond to Washington ESD's requests for wage information. Unfortunately there's not much you can do to speed it up from your end.

•That's way too long! The whole Washington ESD system is so slow. I've been waiting 4 weeks for my adjudication and still nothing.

I had the exact same problem trying to get through to Washington ESD about confusing codes on my claim. Spent literally hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to actual Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It actually got me connected to someone who could explain what was happening with my claim.

•Really? How does that work exactly? I'm so frustrated with trying to call Washington ESD myself.

•Basically they handle the calling process for you and get you connected to a real person at Washington ESD. Much better than sitting on hold for hours or getting the busy signal over and over.

•Sounds too good to be true honestly. What's the catch?

The 602a code specifically indicates that Washington ESD is conducting a benefit year earnings review. This happens when their automated system flags potential issues with your base year wages or when there are questions about your work history. Common triggers include: working in multiple states, having employers that report wages late, discrepancies in your reported work dates, or complex employment situations like seasonal work or contract positions.

•That makes sense. I did work in Oregon for about 3 months before moving back to Washington. Could that complicate things?

•Yes, out-of-state work definitely complicates the wage verification process. Washington ESD has to coordinate with Oregon's employment department to get your wage records, which adds time to the review.

•ugh why is everything with unemployment so complicated?? just give people their money

While you're waiting for the 602a review to complete, make sure you keep filing your weekly claims! Even though your payments are on hold, you still need to maintain your claim. Missing weekly certifications can cause additional delays once the wage verification is resolved.

•Good point, I'll make sure to keep doing my weekly claims. Should I still be doing job searches while this is pending?

•Yes, absolutely continue your job search activities and log them in WorkSourceWA. The work search requirements don't stop during adjudication or wage verification processes.

This whole system is such a mess. I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months and it's just one delay after another. First it was adjudication, now it's wage verification, what's next?? They make it impossible to get help when you need it most.

•I feel you. Lost my job in December and still fighting with them about my claim. It's like they don't want to pay anyone.

•Same here, the whole process is designed to frustrate people into giving up

For what it's worth, I had a 602a hold last year and it did eventually resolve. Took about 5 weeks but I got all my back pay once it cleared. The waiting is awful but it usually works out in the end.

•That's reassuring to hear. Did you have to provide any additional documentation during the process?

•They asked for pay stubs from one of my previous employers to verify some wage information, but that was it. Most of the delay was just waiting for employers to respond to Washington ESD's requests.

I actually used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it really does work. Got connected to a Washington ESD rep in like 10 minutes instead of calling all day. The agent was able to look up my account and explain exactly what was happening with my wage verification. Worth it just for the peace of mind of talking to someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

•How much does something like that cost though?

•Honestly just being able to get answers was worth it for me. Better than spending days trying to get through on my own.

make sure you keep screenshots of everything in your account showing the 602a status. if there are any issues later you'll want documentation of when this all started

•Good idea, I'll start taking screenshots of my account status regularly.

The 602a wage verification process is actually pretty thorough once it gets going. Washington ESD contacts all your base year employers to confirm your wages and work dates. If any employer doesn't respond within a certain timeframe, they'll use the wage information you provided when you filed your claim. The review ensures you're getting the correct weekly benefit amount based on your actual earnings.

Drew Hathaway
•So there's a chance my benefit amount could change once this review is complete?
0 coins
Dana Doyle
•Yes, it could go up or down depending on what the wage verification reveals. If additional wages are confirmed, your weekly benefit amount would increase. If some wages can't be verified, it might decrease.

•That's actually kind of scary. What if it goes down significantly?

I had a similar situation and what helped was gathering all my own wage documentation - pay stubs, W-2s, 1099s, etc. Even though Washington ESD is doing their own verification, having your own records ready can be helpful if they need additional information from you.

•That's smart. I should dig up all my old pay stubs just in case they ask for them.

Does anyone know if you can still get emergency food assistance while waiting for unemployment benefits to start? This whole process is taking forever and bills don't stop.

Khalid Howes
•Yes, you can apply for SNAP benefits and other emergency assistance while your unemployment claim is processing. Check with DSHS for food assistance programs.

•Thanks, I might need to look into that if this takes much longer.

Just want to add that the 602a code doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem with your claim. It's often just a routine verification process, especially for claims that involve multiple employers or complex work histories. Try not to panic about it.

•That's good to know. I was starting to worry that I had done something wrong when I filed my claim.

I tried that Claimyr thing too after seeing it mentioned here and it actually worked great. The Washington ESD agent I spoke with was really helpful and explained that 602a reviews are super common right now because they're being extra careful with wage verification after all the fraud issues from the pandemic. She said most of them resolve without any issues.

Drew Hathaway
•That makes me feel better. I was worried this was going to turn into a huge problem.

•Yeah the fraud stuff really messed up the system for everyone. Now they're extra cautious about everything.

Keep checking your account regularly for updates. Sometimes the 602a status will change without them sending you a notification. Mine went from wage verification to approved over a weekend and I almost missed it.

Drew Hathaway
•How often should I check? Daily?
0 coins
Darren Brooks
•I checked mine every couple days. Daily might be overkill but definitely check a few times a week so you don't miss any status changes.

For future reference, you can also check your wage and employment history in the WorkSourceWA system to see what information Washington ESD has on file for you. Sometimes discrepancies there can trigger these verification reviews.

Drew Hathaway
•I didn't know you could check that in WorkSourceWA. I'll take a look and see if there are any obvious issues with my work history.
