What does open status mean on Washington ESD unemployment claim?
I just checked my Washington ESD account and my claim shows 'open status' but I'm not sure what this actually means. Is this good or bad? I filed my initial claim about 2 weeks ago and have been doing my weekly claims but haven't received any payments yet. Should I be worried that something is wrong with my claim? The website doesn't really explain what open status means compared to other statuses.

Open status is actually a good thing! It means your claim is active and you can continue filing your weekly claims. It's different from 'closed' or 'denied' status. The reason you haven't gotten payments yet is probably because your claim is still processing through the system.

•Oh thank god, I was panicking thinking something was wrong. So I should keep filing my weekly claims then?

•Yes definitely keep filing! Missing weekly claims can cause issues later even if you haven't been paid yet.

I had open status for like 6 weeks before I got my first payment. The system is just slow but open means you're good to go.

•6 weeks?? That seems really long. Did you have to do anything special or did it just eventually process?

•It was during a busy period so that might have been why. I didn't have to do anything extra, just kept filing weekly.

Open status means your claim is active and eligible for benefits, but there might still be processing steps happening in the background. Check if you have any 'to-do' items in your account that need attention. Sometimes there are verification steps that can delay payments even with open status.

•I checked and don't see any to-do items. My account looks pretty clean except for the open status.

•That's good then. Open status with no pending items usually means you're just waiting for normal processing.

God trying to get through to Washington ESD to ask questions like this is impossible. I've been calling for days and either get disconnected or sit on hold forever. There's got to be a better way to reach them.

•I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Really? How does that work exactly? I'm desperate at this point.

•They basically handle the calling process for you and connect you when an agent becomes available. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

open status just means its not closed lol pretty self explanatory

•Well yeah but I wanted to make sure it didn't mean there were issues or anything.

•Nothing wrong with asking! The Washington ESD website isn't always clear about what different statuses mean.

Just to clarify the different claim statuses you might see: Open means active and you can file weekly claims. Closed means no longer active (could be because you found work, exhausted benefits, or were disqualified). Pending usually means there's an issue being reviewed. Denied means your claim was rejected.

•This is super helpful! I was worried open meant there was some kind of problem.

•What about 'under review' status? I've seen that mentioned before.

Carmen Ruiz
•Under review typically means there's an adjudication issue being investigated. That's when you might need to provide additional documentation.

I remember being confused about this too when I first filed. Open status is definitely what you want. Just be patient with the payments - Washington ESD processes can take time especially if you're a new claimant.

•Thanks, that makes me feel better. I guess I just need to be more patient.

•Yeah the waiting is the worst part but once it starts flowing it's usually pretty consistent.

The Washington ESD system is so confusing with all these different statuses. I wish they would just explain things more clearly on their website instead of leaving people guessing.

•Agreed! For something so important they really should make the information more accessible.

•I think they assume everyone just knows what these terms mean but obviously that's not the case.

One thing to watch out for with open status - make sure you're still meeting all the requirements like job search activities and reporting any work or income. Open status can change quickly if you miss requirements.

Yuki Sato
•Good point. I've been logging my job searches and haven't worked since I filed so I think I'm good there.

•Perfect. As long as you stay compliant, open status should remain and payments should start flowing soon.

been dealing with this same thing. open status for 3 weeks now, no payments yet but everyone keeps saying be patient. starting to wonder if theres actually an issue they're not telling us about

Carmen Ruiz
•3 weeks isn't unusual especially for new claims. The system has to verify employment history, calculate benefit amounts, etc. If there were actual issues you'd typically see them in your account.

•i guess ill give it another week but this is really stressful when you have bills to pay

•I totally understand the stress. Maybe try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier if you want to talk to an agent directly about your timeline.

Open status has been consistent for me for months now. I file every week and get paid every week. Once the initial processing is done, open status just means business as usual.

Yuki Sato
•That's reassuring to hear from someone who's been through the whole process.

Dmitry Smirnov
•Yeah the beginning is definitely the most stressful part because you don't know what to expect.

Does open status ever change to something else automatically or does it stay open until you close the claim yourself?
0 coins
Carmen Ruiz
•It can change automatically if you become ineligible (like if you report income that makes you ineligible for that week) or if there are issues that need investigation. But typically it stays open as long as you're eligible and filing.

Ava Rodriguez
•Makes sense. So open is basically the normal ongoing status then.

I had open status and then it changed to 'pending' when I reported some part-time work. Scared me at first but it went back to open the next week after they processed it.

Yuki Sato
•Oh wow that would definitely freak me out too. Good to know it can change temporarily.

Miguel Diaz
•Yeah anytime you report changes it might temporarily affect your status while they process the information.

honestly the whole washington esd system is a mess. took me forever to figure out what any of these statuses meant and even longer to get someone on the phone to explain it

Mei Wong
•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. Got tired of wasting hours trying to reach someone the normal way.

•might have to look into that. this system shouldn't be this complicated

For what it's worth, I think open status is probably the best status you can have. It means everything is working as it should be.

Yuki Sato
•Yeah I'm starting to realize that. I was overthinking it because I was nervous about the whole process.

•Totally understandable! Unemployment can be really stressful when it's new to you.

Just wanted to add that you should still check your account regularly even with open status. Sometimes there are messages or requirements that pop up that you need to address to keep your claim active.

Yuki Sato
•Good advice. I'll make sure to log in regularly and not just assume everything is fine.

•Exactly. Better to be proactive than miss something important.
