Washington ESD unemployment how much will I get weekly - need to know benefit amount

So I just got laid off from my warehouse job last week and I'm trying to figure out how much my unemployment benefits will be. I was making about $18/hour working 40 hours a week for the past 8 months. I know Washington ESD calculates it based on your wages but I can't find a clear answer anywhere on their website. Does anyone know roughly how much I should expect? I need to know so I can budget for rent and bills while I'm looking for work.

It's roughly 60-70% of your average weekly wage up to a maximum. For 2025 the max weekly benefit is $999 but most people don't get that much. You'll need to look at your highest earning quarter from the past year.

Thanks! So if I was making around $720/week that would be like $400-500 maybe?

0 coins

Yeah somewhere in that range, but Washington ESD uses a specific formula based on your base period wages. You won't know the exact amount until they process your claim.

0 coins

i think its like half your paycheck or something? mine was way less than i expected when i got laid off last year

0 coins

It's not just half your paycheck though. They look at your earnings over 4 quarters and use the highest quarter to calculate it. Plus there's a minimum and maximum amount.

0 coins

oh ok that makes sense why mine was so low then

The Washington ESD benefit calculator on their website can give you an estimate if you have your wage information. But honestly, calling them directly is the fastest way to get accurate info about your specific situation. I had trouble getting through their phone lines though - kept getting busy signals for days.

I had the same problem trying to call Washington ESD! Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Actually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to them faster. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

0 coins

Interesting, never heard of that. Did it actually work for you?

0 coins

Yeah it did! Got connected to an actual person within like 20 minutes instead of calling for days. Worth it when you need answers about your claim.

0 coins

The system is so confusing! I've been trying to figure out my benefit amount for weeks. My claim is still in adjudication and I can't get anyone on the phone to explain anything.

0 coins

Adjudication can take forever unfortunately. If you're in adjudication it means they're reviewing something about your claim before they can determine your benefit amount.

0 coins

Do you know what they're usually reviewing? I reported everything correctly when I filed.

0 coins

Could be anything - verifying your employment, checking if you quit vs got laid off, making sure you meet the work requirements. They have to verify all the details before approving benefits.

0 coins

For 2025 the benefit calculation is based on your highest quarter earnings during your base period. The formula is: (highest quarter wages ÷ 26) + $15. But there's a minimum of $295/week and maximum of $999/week. Your $18/hour job should put you somewhere in the middle range.

0 coins

This is really helpful! So if my highest quarter was like $9,400 that would be around $376 plus $15 = $391/week?

0 coins

That sounds about right based on the formula. Remember you'll also need to do your weekly claims and job search requirements to keep getting benefits.

0 coins

wait so everyone gets different amounts? i thought it was the same for everyone

0 coins

No it's based on what you earned at your job. Someone who made $15/hour gets less than someone who made $25/hour. That's why they ask for all your wage info when you apply.

0 coins

Just went through this whole process. The amount they give you is way less than what you actually need to live on. I was making decent money and my UI barely covers my rent. The system is broken.

0 coins

Yeah the replacement rate isn't great but it's better than nothing. Are you doing the job search requirements? That's the part that really gets me - having to apply to jobs just to keep getting benefits.

0 coins

Yeah I'm doing the 3 job contacts per week thing. It's annoying but I need the money so whatever.

0 coins

One thing to keep in mind is that your benefit amount is set when your claim is approved. Even if you find part-time work, you might still be eligible for partial benefits as long as you report your earnings on your weekly claims.

0 coins

Good to know! I might try to pick up some gig work while I'm looking for full-time jobs.

0 coins

Just make sure you report all earnings honestly. Washington ESD will find out anyway and you don't want to deal with an overpayment situation.

0 coins

This is all making me more anxious about my claim. I still don't know how much I'll get and it's been 3 weeks since I filed. Should I be worried?

0 coins

3 weeks isn't that unusual unfortunately. But if you're worried about the status, that's exactly when I used Claimyr to get through to someone at Washington ESD. They explained what was happening with my claim and gave me a timeline.

0 coins

Maybe I should try that. I'm just worried something went wrong with my application.

0 coins

The benefit amount really depends on your work history. I had a job that paid well but I only worked there for 6 months, so my benefit was lower than expected because my base period included quarters when I wasn't working.

0 coins

That's a good point. The base period is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. So recent job changes can definitely affect your benefit amount.

0 coins

Exactly. I wish I had understood that better when I filed. Would have saved me a lot of confusion.

0 coins

so if i made like $30k last year what would that be per week?

0 coins

It's not based on your yearly total, it's based on your highest quarter. So if you made $30k evenly across the year, your highest quarter would be around $7,500, which would be roughly $288 + $15 = $303/week.

0 coins

oh ok that actually sounds about right for what i got

0 coins

Has anyone had luck with the online benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website? I tried using it but kept getting error messages.

0 coins

Their website has been having issues lately. Sometimes it works better if you try it during off-peak hours like early morning or late evening.

0 coins

I'll try that, thanks. Just want to get a rough idea before my claim gets processed.

0 coins

Don't forget that unemployment benefits are taxable income! I learned that the hard way when I did my taxes last year. You can have taxes withheld from your weekly benefits if you want.

0 coins

Oh wow I didn't think about that. How much do they withhold if you choose that option?

0 coins

I think it's 10% federal withholding. You can change it in your online account or when you file your weekly claims.

0 coins

The whole process is just designed to make you give up. Between figuring out the benefit amount, doing weekly claims, job search requirements, and dealing with their terrible phone system, it's like they don't want you to get benefits.

0 coins

I feel the same way! It's so stressful when you're already worried about money.

0 coins

That's exactly why I started using Claimyr when I need to talk to someone. Takes the stress out of trying to get through their phone lines.

0 coins

Just a quick success story - I was worried about my benefit amount too but it ended up being fair. Took about 2 weeks to get my first payment after filing. The key is just being patient and making sure you do everything they ask for.

0 coins

That's encouraging! What was your experience like with the weekly claims?

0 coins

Pretty straightforward once you get used to it. Just answer the questions honestly and report any work or earnings. The job search log is kind of a pain but not too bad.

0 coins

One final tip - make sure you understand the difference between your weekly benefit amount and your maximum benefit amount. Your weekly amount is what you get each week, but there's also a total maximum you can receive over the entire benefit year (usually 26 weeks worth).

0 coins

So if my weekly amount is $400, my maximum would be $400 x 26 = $10,400 total?

0 coins

Exactly. And if you find work before using up all 26 weeks, you don't lose the remaining balance - you just stop filing claims.

this thread helped me understand way more than the washington esd website did lol

0 coins

Government websites are notoriously confusing. That's why forums like this are so helpful for getting real answers from people who've been through it.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! I feel way more prepared now to deal with whatever my benefit amount ends up being. This community is amazing.

Good luck with your claim! Hope it goes smoothly for you.
