Washington ESD unemployment benefits - do they count as taxable income?
Just realized I might have messed up on my taxes last year. I collected unemployment from Washington ESD for about 6 months and didn't think about whether it was taxable income or not. My tax preparer never asked about it specifically. Do unemployment benefits from Washington state count as income that I need to report? I'm worried I might owe back taxes or penalties if I didn't report it correctly.

Yes, unemployment benefits are definitely taxable income at the federal level. Washington ESD should have sent you a 1099-G form showing how much you received. You'll need to report that on your federal tax return. The good news is Washington state doesn't have income tax, so you only need to worry about federal taxes.

•Oh no, I don't remember getting a 1099-G form. Where would I find that?

•You can log into your SecureAccess Washington account and download it from there. It should be under tax documents or forms section.

I made the same mistake my first year on unemployment. The IRS caught it and I had to pay back taxes plus interest. Not fun. You should definitely amend your return if you didn't report the unemployment income.

•How much extra did you end up owing? I'm scared it's going to be a huge amount.

•It wasn't too bad actually, maybe $400 in taxes plus like $50 in interest and penalties. Could have been worse.

Just went through this whole ordeal trying to get my 1099-G from Washington ESD. Their phone system is impossible to get through to talk to anyone. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me actually reach someone at Washington ESD. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Got my tax form issue sorted out in like 20 minutes after weeks of trying on my own.

•Never heard of Claimyr before. Is it legit or just another scam service?

•It's legit, they don't ask for any personal info or passwords. Just helps you get through the phone system to actually talk to a real person at Washington ESD.

•That sounds too good to be true but I'm desperate at this point. The wait times are insane.

Pro tip: You can also have taxes withheld from your unemployment payments when you're filing your weekly claims. Washington ESD gives you the option to withhold 10% for federal taxes. Saves you from owing a big chunk at tax time.

•Wish I had known that! I would have definitely chosen to withhold taxes.

•Wait, they give you that option? I've been on unemployment for 2 months and never saw that choice.

•It's usually buried in the weekly claim questions. Look for something about federal tax withholding when you're doing your weekly claim filing.

this is why the whole system is broken... they dont tell you unemployment is taxable then hit you with penalties later. makes no sense

•They actually do mention it in the handbook and on the website, but I agree it should be more prominent.

•who reads the handbook when you're desperate for money? they should make it super obvious

I collected unemployment in 2023 and my tax guy said I owed like $1,200 extra because of it. Almost gave me a heart attack. Had to set up a payment plan with the IRS.

•That's exactly what I'm afraid of happening to me. Did you not have any taxes withheld?

NightOwl42
•Nope, took the full amount each week because I needed every penny. Big mistake in hindsight.

•At least you can do payment plans with the IRS. They're actually pretty reasonable about it.

Check your online account at esd.wa.gov - all your tax documents should be there. I just downloaded mine yesterday for 2024 taxes. The 1099-G shows exactly how much you received and how much was withheld if you chose that option.

•Thanks, I'll check that right now. Hopefully I can find all the forms I need.

•Mine weren't showing up online for some reason. Had to call Washington ESD to get them mailed to me.

PSA: If you're currently receiving unemployment, definitely choose the tax withholding option! I learned this the hard way last year and ended up owing $800 at tax time. Now I always have 10% withheld automatically.

•How do you change that setting if you're already getting benefits?

•When you file your weekly claim, there should be a question about tax withholding. You can change it anytime.

Used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and finally got through to Washington ESD about my missing 1099-G. Turns out they had an old address on file. The representative was able to update it and send me a new copy. Saved me so much frustration compared to trying to call on my own.

•I think they have different options but it was worth it to not spend hours on hold anymore. Check their website for current pricing.

Unemployment is absolutely taxable income federally. Washington state doesn't tax it since we don't have state income tax, but the IRS definitely wants their cut. If you didn't report it, you'll want to file an amended return ASAP to avoid bigger penalties.

•Do I need to hire a tax professional to file an amended return or can I do it myself?

•You can definitely do it yourself with a 1040X form. Not too complicated if you have all your documents.

Just want to add that if you received unemployment during 2020 or 2021, there were special tax rules that might have applied. But for regular unemployment in recent years, it's all taxable income that needs to be reported.

Zoe Papadakis
•This was in 2024, so probably no special rules apply to me.

The hardest part about unemployment taxes is that they don't withhold enough even if you choose the 10% option. I still ended up owing money at tax time even with withholding. Might want to make quarterly estimated tax payments if you're getting significant unemployment benefits.

•That's a good point. 10% might not be enough depending on your total income and tax bracket.

•This is all so complicated. I just want to make sure I don't get in trouble with the IRS.

Another thing to remember is that if you received unemployment and then got a job later in the year, your total income might push you into a higher tax bracket. That could mean owing more taxes than you expect.

•Oh great, I did get a job in August. So I had unemployment income AND work income in the same year.

•That's actually pretty common. Just make sure both are reported correctly on your tax return.

For anyone who's worried about owing back taxes on unreported unemployment income - the IRS is usually pretty reasonable about setting up payment plans. Don't panic, just get it sorted out as soon as possible.

Quick reminder that you need to keep all your unemployment documentation for at least 3 years in case the IRS has questions. This includes your 1099-G forms and any correspondence with Washington ESD.
