Washington ESD - once you apply for unemployment how long does it take to get approved?
Just submitted my UI application through the Washington ESD website yesterday after getting laid off from my warehouse job. The system said my claim was received but I'm stressed about how long this whole process takes. I've got rent due in two weeks and really need to know what to expect. Has anyone gone through this recently? How long did it take from submitting your application to actually receiving your first payment? Also not sure if I need to do anything else besides wait - the website mentions weekly claims but I haven't gotten any instructions about that yet.

It typically takes 1-2 weeks for Washington ESD to process your initial claim if there are no issues. Once approved, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to continue receiving benefits. Your first payment usually comes about a week after your first weekly claim is processed, so expect 2-3 weeks total from application to first payment in your account.

•Thanks! That timeline helps me plan better. Do I need to wait for them to contact me about the weekly claims or should I be checking the website regularly?

•Check your account regularly - you should see instructions for filing weekly claims once your initial claim is approved. Don't wait for them to contact you as that could delay your benefits.

Mine took 3 weeks but I had some adjudication issues because my employer contested it initially. If your separation was straightforward (layoff, not fired for cause) it should be faster.

•It was definitely a layoff - they eliminated my whole department. Hopefully that means no complications.

•That should make it pretty straightforward then. Just make sure you file your weekly claims on time once you're able to.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status but their phone lines are impossible. If you need to speak with someone, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which actually gets you connected to ESD agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Interesting, never heard of that service. Is it legit? I'm worried about giving my info to third parties.

•Yeah it's legitimate - they just help you get through the phone queue system. You still talk directly to ESD agents, they just bypass the busy signals and long hold times.

•I used Claimyr last month when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Worked exactly as advertised - got connected to an actual ESD representative within an hour instead of calling for days.

The waiting is the worst part honestly. I applied 2 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything definitive. Keep checking your account daily because sometimes there are issues that need to be resolved that they don't always notify you about quickly.

•That's frustrating. Are you able to see any status updates in your account or is it just showing pending?

Isabella Silva
•It shows 'claim under review' but no specifics. I'm thinking about using that Claimyr service someone mentioned to actually talk to someone.

ugh the whole system is SO SLOW... I've been waiting 3 weeks and still nothing!! How are we supposed to pay bills while they take forever to process claims? This is ridiculous

Javier Morales
•I understand the frustration, but 3 weeks might indicate there's an issue with your claim that needs resolution. Have you tried calling to check on the status?

Ravi Choudhury
•tried calling probably 100 times, either busy signal or they hang up after being on hold for hours

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - it's designed for this specific problem of not being able to get through to ESD by phone.

Just went through this process last month. Application to first payment was exactly 18 days for me. No issues with my claim, straightforward layoff situation. The key is filing your weekly claims the moment you're able to - don't wait.

Natasha Petrova
•18 days isn't too bad. Did you get any notifications when you were supposed to start filing weekly claims?

•I got an email but it went to my spam folder initially. Check spam and log into your account regularly - that's more reliable than waiting for notifications.

Been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years (thanks, retail industry). First time took about 2 weeks, second time took over a month because they wanted additional documentation about my work history. Every case is different depending on your situation.

Natasha Petrova
•What kind of additional documentation did they want the second time?

•They wanted verification of my employment dates and wages from multiple employers. Had to track down old pay stubs and tax documents.

•Good to know - I'll make sure to keep all that stuff handy just in case.

The timeline really depends on whether your claim goes into adjudication or not. Simple cases process quickly, but if there's any question about your eligibility it can drag on for weeks.

•What kinds of things trigger adjudication? I want to make sure I haven't missed anything that could cause delays.

•Usually things like voluntary quit vs. involuntary separation, questions about misconduct, or discrepancies in employment information. Since you mentioned layoff, you should be fine.

same boat as you - applied last week and constantly refreshing my account hoping for updates lol. this waiting game is stressful when you have bills piling up

Natasha Petrova
•Right? I keep checking like 10 times a day even though I know it won't change that fast.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Speeds up payment processing by a few days compared to waiting for a check in the mail.

Natasha Petrova
•Good point - I did set that up during the application process. Hopefully that helps when the time comes.

•Definitely recommend direct deposit. Paper checks can take an extra week to arrive and process.

My brother just went through this whole process. Took him about 2.5 weeks from application to first payment. He said the hardest part was figuring out when to start the weekly claims - apparently you can do it too early and mess things up?
0 coins
Javier Morales
•You can only file weekly claims after your initial claim is approved. The system won't let you file before then, so no worries about doing it too early.

•Good to know! He was probably just confused about the timing.

If you end up needing to talk to someone at ESD and can't get through on the phone, definitely check out Claimyr. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked great when I needed help with my adjudication issue.

•Several people have mentioned that service now. Might be worth keeping in mind if I run into problems.

•I used them too when my weekly claims got stuck. Much better than spending entire days trying to call ESD directly.

Washington ESD is actually pretty good compared to other states I've heard about. Most people I know get processed within 2-3 weeks for straightforward cases. Just be patient and keep checking your account.

Make sure you're ready to start your job search activities once approved. Washington has work search requirements that you'll need to track and report on your weekly claims.
0 coins
Natasha Petrova
•Thanks for the reminder. How many job search activities do you need per week?
0 coins
NebulaNomad
•It varies based on your situation, but typically 3 job search activities per week. Keep detailed records of what you do.

•You can find the specific requirements for your situation in your account once your claim is approved. They'll spell out exactly what you need to do.

One thing that helped me was calling really early in the morning when they first open. Still hard to get through but better odds than later in the day.

•Even early morning calling is hit or miss. That's exactly why services like Claimyr exist - to solve this specific phone access problem.

•True, might have to look into that if I need to call again.

The website says processing times but honestly they seem pretty conservative. Mine was faster than their estimate, but I've heard of people taking longer too.
0 coins
Natasha Petrova
•Yeah, I saw those estimates but wanted to hear from real people about their actual experiences.

Nia Wilson
•Smart approach. Real experiences give you a better sense of what to actually expect.

Just remember that even after approval, your first payment might be less than expected because of the waiting week. Washington has a one-week waiting period that doesn't get paid unless you stay on benefits for a certain amount of time.
0 coins
Natasha Petrova
•Wait, what? There's a waiting week that doesn't get paid? I didn't realize that.
0 coins
Javier Morales
•Yes, the first week of your claim is an unpaid waiting week. You can potentially get it paid later if you remain eligible for several weeks, but initially it's unpaid.

Natasha Petrova
•Good to know so I can budget accordingly. Thanks for the heads up.

Hang in there - the waiting is definitely the hardest part but once everything gets rolling it becomes pretty routine. File your weeklies on time and you should be good to go.
