How much unemployment will I get from Washington ESD - calculation help?
I just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant and I'm trying to figure out how much my weekly unemployment benefit will be. I was making about $28 per hour for the last 18 months, usually working 40 hours a week. Does anyone know how Washington ESD calculates the weekly benefit amount? I've looked at their website but the calculation seems confusing with all the base periods and quarters stuff. Really need to know what to expect so I can budget properly.

Washington ESD uses your highest earning quarter from your base period to calculate benefits. They take that quarter's earnings and divide by 26 to get your weekly benefit amount. Maximum weekly benefit for 2025 is $999 plus $25 for dependents if you qualify.

•So if I made around $14,500 in my highest quarter that would be about $558 per week? That actually sounds reasonable.

•Yeah that math looks right. Just remember you have to pay taxes on unemployment benefits if you choose to.

The base period is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed. So if you filed in January 2025, they'd look at your wages from October 2023 through September 2024. Make sure your employer reported all your wages correctly or it could affect your benefit amount.

•How do I check if my wages were reported right? I want to make sure I get the full amount I'm entitled to.

•You can check your wage history on the Washington ESD website once you create your account. If there are missing wages you'll need to contact your employer to fix it.

I had a similar situation last year and couldn't get through to Washington ESD on the phone to ask about my benefit calculation. Kept getting busy signals or hung up on after waiting forever. Finally used this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach a live agent - check out claimyr.com. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - they basically handle the calling and waiting for you then connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of frustration.

•That sounds too good to be true but if it actually works might be worth it. The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely terrible.

Don't forget you can only collect benefits for a maximum of 26 weeks in most cases. And you have to actively look for work and report your job search activities every week when you file your weekly claim.

•What counts as job search activities? Do I need to apply to a certain number of jobs each week?
0 coins
Mateo Sanchez
•You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. This can include applying for jobs, contacting employers directly, attending job fairs, etc.

The weekly benefit calculator on Washington ESD's website is actually pretty accurate once you figure out how to use it. You just need your total wages for each quarter in your base period.

•I tried using that calculator but it was confusing as hell. Couldn't figure out which quarters to use.

•Yeah it's not very user friendly. The quarters are just calendar quarters - Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sep, Oct-Dec.

ugh the whole system is so complicated why cant they just tell you upfront what youll get instead of making you guess

•Because they want to make it as difficult as possible so people give up and don't collect benefits they're entitled to.

•It's actually not that bad once you understand it. The complexity comes from having to account for different work histories and wage patterns.

I was getting $485 per week when I was on unemployment last year. Made about $25/hour at my previous job. The amount seems fair compared to what I was earning.

•That's helpful to know - gives me a better idea of what to expect. Did you have any issues with your weekly claims?
0 coins
AstroAce
•Not really, just had to make sure I filed every week and kept up with my job search log. Missing a week can mess up your whole claim.

One thing to watch out for - if you have any severance pay or vacation payout it might delay when your benefits start. Washington ESD considers that income even though you're not working.

Diego Flores
•I did get 2 weeks severance pay. Does that mean I have to wait 2 weeks before I can start collecting?
0 coins
Yuki Kobayashi
•Not necessarily 2 weeks but they'll calculate it based on your weekly benefit rate. Best to report it when you file and let them figure it out.

•Definitely report all severance and vacation pay. Trying to hide it will just cause problems later if they find out.

The whole unemployment system is designed to give you just enough to survive but not enough to be comfortable. It's supposed to motivate you to find work quickly.

•Yeah it's usually like 50-60% of what you were making before. Better than nothing but definitely not easy to live on.

•especially with rent and everything being so expensive now. unemployment barely covers basics

I remember when I first applied I was so confused about the monetary determination letter. Took me forever to understand what all those numbers meant.

•What's a monetary determination letter?

•It's what Washington ESD sends you after you apply that shows your benefit amount and how long you can collect. Usually comes within a week or two of filing.

Pro tip: if your benefit amount seems too low compared to what you were earning, double check that all your employers reported your wages correctly. I had one employer who didn't report my last quarter and it cost me $100 per week.

•How long does it take to fix something like that if wages are missing?

Jamal Harris
•Took about 3 weeks in my case. Had to get my employer to submit the missing wage information to Washington ESD.

•This is another situation where being able to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD helps a lot. Claimyr really came in handy for me when I had wage issues.

Don't forget about the waiting week - you won't get paid for your first week of unemployment even if you're approved. It's just how the system works.

•Wait what? So even if I file right away I don't get anything for the first week?
0 coins
GalaxyGlider
•Correct, the first week is unpaid. You still have to file the weekly claim but you won't receive benefits for that week.

The benefit amount also depends on if you have any dependents. You can get an extra $25 per week for each dependent child under 18.
0 coins
Diego Flores
•I have two kids so that would be an extra $50 per week. Do I need to provide proof of dependents?
0 coins
Liam Sullivan
•Yes you'll need to provide documentation like birth certificates or tax returns showing you claim them as dependents.

Another thing - if you work part time while collecting unemployment you can still get benefits but they'll reduce your weekly amount based on how much you earn.

•How much can you earn before it affects your benefits?
0 coins
Amara Okafor
•In Washington you can earn up to your weekly benefit amount minus $5 before they start reducing your benefits. So if your benefit is $500 you can earn up to $495 without any reduction.

Just make sure you file your initial claim as soon as possible after you lose your job. You can't backdate benefits in Washington so any delay costs you money.

Diego Flores
•Good to know - I filed my claim the day after my last day of work so hopefully that was quick enough.

Fatima Al-Qasimi
•That should be fine. The important thing is not waiting weeks or months to file.

I've been through this process twice and the second time was much easier because I knew what to expect. The first time I was constantly worried about doing something wrong.

•What's the biggest mistake people make when filing for unemployment?
0 coins
StarStrider
•Not keeping detailed records of job search activities. Washington ESD can audit your claim at any time and if you can't prove you were looking for work they can make you pay back benefits.
0 coins
Zara Mirza
•This is really important - keep records of every job application, contact with employers, networking events, etc. Date, company name, contact person, what you did.

Sofia Torres
One last thing - if you disagree with your benefit amount you can appeal the monetary determination. You have 30 days from when they mail it to you to file an appeal.

•Good luck with your claim! The process can be frustrating but most people get through it okay if they follow the rules and stay on top of their weekly claims.
