How much is unemployment weekly payment in Washington state?
I just got laid off from my construction job and need to apply for unemployment benefits. I'm trying to figure out how much money I might get each week from Washington ESD so I can budget for rent and groceries. I was making about $22 per hour working full time. Does anyone know how they calculate the weekly benefit amount? I've heard different things from coworkers but want to get the real info.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount using your highest earning quarter from your base period. The maximum weekly benefit for 2025 is $999 but most people get way less than that. You'll get roughly 3.85% of your total wages from your highest quarter.

•Thanks! So they look at my best 3 months of earnings? I had some really good months last summer with overtime.

•Exactly, they take your highest earning quarter and divide by 13 to get your base weekly amount. Then multiply that by 0.385 to get your actual benefit.

I was making similar money in manufacturing and my weekly benefit is $410. But it took forever to get approved because my claim went into adjudication for weeks.

•What's adjudication? Should I be worried about that?

•It's when they review your claim for issues. Mine was because I had a brief period between jobs. Just delays everything.

The formula is confusing but there's a benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website that gives you an estimate. You just need your wage info from the last 18 months or so.

•I'll check that out, thanks. Hopefully it's more accurate than what my buddy told me.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to check on your application or get questions answered, I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helps you actually get through to a real person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•That sounds too good to be true. How does it work exactly?

•They handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you to an actual Washington ESD representative when they get through. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•I've heard of services like this but never tried one. Does it actually work for getting claim info?

•Yeah I'm not expecting to get rich, just trying to figure out if I can cover my basic expenses while job hunting.

Also remember you can collect benefits for up to 26 weeks in Washington state, but you have to file weekly claims and meet job search requirements. Don't skip the weekly filing even if you haven't heard back about approval yet.

•Good to know. What are the job search requirements exactly?

Keisha Thompson
•You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. They can audit you so keep good records of where you applied.

•This is so stressful trying to keep track of everything while dealing with being unemployed.

One thing that helped me was setting up direct deposit right away. Getting paper checks takes forever and you don't want delays when money is tight.

•Good tip, I'll make sure to do that when I apply.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE!! I've been waiting 6 weeks for my claim to get processed and they keep giving me the runaround. Can't get anyone on the phone and my online account doesn't show any issues.

•That's exactly why I used Claimyr - got tired of wasting entire days trying to reach someone at Washington ESD. Within a few hours they had me connected to an adjudicator who explained what was holding up my claim.

•At this point I'm willing to try anything. This is ridiculous.

For what it's worth, your benefit amount also depends on whether you have any dependents. You can get additional money for dependent children under 18.

•I don't have kids so that doesn't apply to me, but good to know for others reading this.

I'm curious about the tax situation too. Do they take taxes out of unemployment benefits or do you have to pay at the end of the year?

Keisha Thompson
•You can choose to have federal taxes withheld when you set up your claim. I'd recommend it unless you want a big tax bill next April.

Javier Morales
•Thanks, I'll definitely have them withhold taxes then.

Does anyone know if working part time affects your benefits? I might be able to pick up some weekend work.

Keisha Thompson
•Yes, you have to report any earnings when you file your weekly claim. They'll reduce your benefit based on how much you earn, but you can still collect partial benefits.

•OK so it's not an all or nothing thing, that's good to know.

Another heads up - make sure you answer all the weekly claim questions honestly. They cross-reference with employer records and if they catch you lying it can disqualify you permanently.

•Definitely planning to be completely honest. Not worth the risk.

I was in a similar situation last year and ended up getting about $385 per week. It's not great but it kept me afloat while I found a new job. The key is applying as soon as possible after you lose your job.

•Yeah I'm planning to apply first thing Monday morning. How long did it take to get your first payment?

GamerGirl99
•About 3 weeks from application to first payment, but that was pretty typical timing back then.

dont forget about the waiting week. first week you file you wont get paid for
0 coins
TechNinja
•Wait, there's a waiting week? So even if I get approved I don't get paid for the first week?
0 coins
Keisha Thompson
•That's correct, the first week is unpaid. It's called the waiting week and it's just how the system works in Washington.

Quick question - do you have to live in Washington to collect benefits or just have worked here?
0 coins
Keisha Thompson
•You just need to have worked in Washington and earned enough wages during your base period. You can collect benefits even if you move to another state.

The online system crashes all the time especially on Sundays when everyone is trying to file their weekly claims. Try to file early in the week if possible.

•Good tip! I'll try to file on Monday or Tuesday instead of waiting until the weekend.

Has anyone had issues with identity verification? I heard that can delay claims for weeks or months.

•YES! That's part of what's holding up my claim. They want all these documents and the upload system keeps failing.

•That's another area where Claimyr really helped me out. The rep they connected me with walked me through exactly what documents I needed and the best way to submit them.

Just a reality check - even if you get approved quickly, it might take a while to get into a rhythm with the weekly filings and job search requirements. Don't get discouraged if it feels overwhelming at first.

•Thanks for the encouragement. This whole situation is pretty stressful but I'm trying to stay positive.

One more thing - if you get disqualified for any reason, you can appeal the decision. Don't just give up if they deny your claim initially.
0 coins
TechNinja
•Good to know there's an appeal process. Hopefully I won't need it but it's reassuring.

•The appeal deadline is pretty strict though, so don't wait around if you disagree with a decision.
