How much is unemployment in Washington - weekly benefit amount questions

I'm trying to figure out what my weekly unemployment benefit amount will be if I file a claim with Washington ESD. I've been working full-time making $52,000 a year but my hours just got cut to part-time. Does anyone know how they calculate the weekly benefit amounts? I heard it's based on your earnings but I'm not sure how much I could get or if it's even worth applying for.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount (WBA) based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. The maximum weekly benefit is currently $999 plus $25 for dependents. They take your highest quarter earnings, divide by 26, then multiply by 0.0385 to get your weekly amount. With your salary, you'd probably qualify for a decent amount.

Thanks! So they look at my best quarter, not my annual salary? That's actually helpful to know.

0 coins

Yeah and if you're working part-time now you might still qualify for partial benefits depending on how much you're earning each week.

I had a similar situation last year and ended up getting around $680 per week. The calculation can be confusing but Washington ESD has a benefit calculator on their website that gives you an estimate. Just have your pay stubs ready from the last 18 months.

0 coins

Did you have any trouble getting through to them when you filed? I keep hearing the phone lines are always busy.

0 coins

Oh yeah, calling Washington ESD is a nightmare. I must have tried hundreds of times. Actually ended up using this service called Claimyr that calls for you - claimyr.com. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

just apply online dont bother calling unless u have problems with ur claim

0 coins

This is good advice. The online application is pretty straightforward for most people.

Be prepared for potential adjudication if you're still working part-time. Washington ESD will need to verify that your hours were involuntarily reduced and that you're available for full-time work. The process can take several weeks.

0 coins

What kind of documentation do I need to prove my hours were cut? I have emails from my manager about the reduction.

0 coins

Those emails would be perfect evidence. Also keep any pay stubs showing the difference in hours/earnings before and after the reduction.

UGH the Washington ESD system is SO confusing!!! I've been trying to figure out my benefit amount for weeks and every calculator gives me different numbers. Why can't they just make this simple???

0 coins

The calculators are estimates because there are so many variables - dependents, part-time work, etc. Your actual amount might be different.

0 coins

I just want to know if I can pay my rent! This is stressful enough without all the guesswork.

0 coins

Whatever you do, don't quit your part-time job to get higher benefits. Washington ESD will disqualify you for voluntary separation without good cause.

0 coins

Good point, I wasn't planning to quit but that's important to know.

0 coins

Also remember you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid, even if you're working part-time hours. And you have to report any earnings from your part-time work.

0 coins

How does that work with partial benefits? Do they reduce the amount based on what I earn each week?

0 coins

Yes, they have a formula where they subtract a portion of your weekly earnings from your benefit amount. As long as you earn less than your weekly benefit amount plus $5, you should still get something.

0 coins

I'm in almost the exact same situation! My hours got cut from 40 to 25 per week. Filed my claim three weeks ago and it's still in adjudication. This waiting is killing me financially.

0 coins

Three weeks?? That's terrible. Have you been able to talk to anyone there about the delay?

0 coins

I finally got through using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. The rep said they're backed up on adjudications but mine should be resolved soon. Worth the cost just to get an actual human on the phone.

0 coins

Don't forget about the job search requirements too. Even with partial benefits you'll need to do work search activities and log them.

0 coins

How many job contacts do I need per week if I'm already working part-time?

0 coins

Still three work search activities per week. Being employed part-time doesn't waive the requirement.

0 coins

The waiting period is what gets most people. Even after you're approved, there's usually a one-week waiting period before payments start.

0 coins

So I won't get paid for the first week even if approved?

0 coins

Exactly, it's like a deductible. The first week is unpaid but you still need to file a weekly claim for it.

0 coins

my cousin got like 400 a week but she was only making minimum wage before so with ur salary u should get way more

0 coins

That gives me hope! I'm definitely going to apply today.

0 coins

One more thing - make sure you have all your employer information ready when you apply. You'll need company names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation for the last 18 months.

0 coins

I've only had this one job for the past two years, so that should be straightforward.

0 coins

Been there with reduced hours! Applied in January and got approved for $743 per week. The process took about 10 days total which wasn't too bad. Just make sure you're honest about everything on the application.

0 coins

That's encouraging! Did you have any issues during adjudication?

0 coins

Nope, everything went smoothly because I had all my documentation ready and my employer didn't contest the claim.

0 coins

Washington ESD's benefit year lasts 52 weeks from when you first file, so even if your hours pick back up later you might still be eligible if they get reduced again.

0 coins

That's really good to know for planning purposes.

0 coins

Update: I FINALLY got through to Washington ESD after literally calling 247 times (yes I counted). My benefit amount will be $592 per week which is way better than I expected! Still waiting for final approval though.

0 coins

247 times?! That's insane but glad you finally got through. I'm definitely going to try that Claimyr thing if I have issues.

0 coins

See, this is exactly why services like Claimyr exist. Nobody should have to call that many times just to talk to someone about their own benefits.

0 coins

Remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay at the end of the year.

0 coins

Good reminder! I'll probably have them withhold taxes to avoid a big bill later.

0 coins

The key is to apply as soon as possible because benefits are backdated to when you first become eligible, not when you actually file the claim.

0 coins

Perfect, I'm going to start my application right now. Thanks everyone for all the helpful info!

0 coins

Quick update - my claim finally got approved! Took exactly 4 weeks from filing to first payment. The adjudication was just to verify my hours were involuntarily reduced. Hang in there if you're waiting!

0 coins

Congrats! That gives me confidence that the process does work, even if it takes time.

0 coins

Four weeks is actually pretty good these days. I've heard of people waiting 8+ weeks during busy periods.

0 coins

For what it's worth, I tried using one of those third-party calling services too when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD. Cost me like $20 but saved hours of my time and frustration. Sometimes it's worth paying for convenience.

0 coins

Which service did you use? Was it reliable?

0 coins

It was Claimyr - same one others mentioned. Worked great, got connected within an hour instead of spending days trying myself.

0 coins

Just wanted to add that if you're approved for partial benefits, you'll need to report your part-time earnings every week when you file your weekly claim. Be precise with the amounts!

0 coins

Will do! I'll keep detailed records of all my hours and pay.
