How much is Washington ESD unemployment per week - need to know my benefit amount
I just got approved for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD and I'm trying to figure out how much I'll get each week. My old job paid me about $4,200 per month before taxes. I've heard different numbers from people but want to know the actual calculation. Does anyone know how Washington ESD determines your weekly benefit amount? I need to plan my budget while I'm job searching.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. They take that quarter's earnings and divide by 26 weeks. The maximum weekly benefit amount for 2025 is $999 per week, but most people don't get the max.

•So if I made $13,000 in my highest quarter, that would be $500 per week? That seems like a lot more than I expected.

Ava Martinez
•Yes, that's roughly correct. Your base period is the first four of the last five completed quarters before you filed your claim.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helps you get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. I used it to get my benefit calculation explained and it was super helpful.

•Is that service free? I don't want to pay extra fees when I'm already unemployed.

•It's not free but it saved me hours of calling. Worth it when you need answers about your benefit amount calculation.

•sounds sketchy to me, why would you need to pay someone to call washington esd for you?

The maximum weekly benefit amount changes each year. For 2025 it's $999 per week. You can also get an additional $25 per week if you have dependents. Your benefit amount is listed in your determination letter from Washington ESD.

•I haven't gotten my determination letter yet. How long does that usually take?

Connor Gallagher
•Usually takes 2-3 weeks after you file your initial claim, as long as there are no issues that require adjudication.

JUST A WARNING - don't trust the online calculators you find on random websites!! They're usually wrong. Washington ESD has their own specific formula and it's different from other states. I learned this the hard way.

•What happened when you used an online calculator?

•It told me I'd get $650 per week but my actual Washington ESD benefit was only $425. Big difference when you're trying to budget!

Here's the exact formula Washington ESD uses: They look at your two highest earning quarters in your base period, add them together, then divide by 52. That gives you your weekly benefit amount, up to the maximum of $999.

•wait i thought it was just the highest quarter divided by 26?

Ava Martinez
•You're right, I mixed that up. It's the highest quarter divided by 26 weeks. Thanks for the correction!

•Great! That sounds about right based on the salary you mentioned. Don't forget you also need to file your weekly claims to actually receive the money.

Dmitry Sokolov
•Yes, I already filed my first weekly claim. Should see the payment in a few days hopefully.

the whole system is confusing. why cant washington esd just tell you upfront what your benefit will be

Connor Gallagher
•They do tell you - it's in your determination letter. The problem is people don't always know where to find it or how to read it.

Don't forget about taxes! Your unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can have taxes withheld or pay them when you file your return.

Dmitry Sokolov
•Oh no, I didn't think about taxes. How much should I have withheld?
0 coins
Paolo Longo
•Washington ESD can withhold 10% for federal taxes. You set this up in your online account or when you file weekly claims.

my benefit amount seemed low so i called to ask about it. turns out i had a part time job during my base period that messed up the calculation
0 coins
Dmitry Sokolov
•How did the part time job affect it? I had some freelance work during that time.
0 coins
Keisha Johnson
•if you didnt report the freelance income properly it could lower your benefit amount. might want to check with washington esd

•The phone lines are definitely hit or miss. Claimyr worked better for me than trying to time the calls perfectly.

Thanks everyone for all the info! I feel much better understanding how Washington ESD calculates the weekly benefit amounts. $487 per week should help me get by while job searching.

question - does the weekly benefit amount ever change or is it fixed for your whole claim?
0 coins
Connor Gallagher
•It stays the same for your entire benefit year unless there are special circumstances like a wage protest or correction.

•good to know, thanks!

i wish washington esd would send text updates about benefit amounts and stuff instead of just letters

Dmitry Sokolov
•That would be so much easier! I almost missed my determination letter because I wasn't checking my physical mail.

Just want to add - if you think your benefit calculation is wrong, you can appeal it within 30 days of getting your determination. I had to do this once and it was worth it.
0 coins
Dmitry Sokolov
•How long did the appeal process take?
0 coins
Natasha Orlova
•About 6 weeks, but I got back pay for the difference once it was resolved.

the benefit amount also depends on when you filed. if you wait too long after losing your job, it can affect which quarters they use for the calculation
0 coins
Dmitry Sokolov
•I filed within a week of my layoff. Should be okay then?
0 coins
Javier Cruz
•yes that should be fine. the base period is determined by when you file your claim

Another tip: your benefit amount is gross, not net. So if you get $500 per week, that's before any taxes are taken out.
0 coins
Dmitry Sokolov
•Right, I need to remember to account for taxes in my budget. Thanks for the reminder.

•yep, learned that one the hard way on my first unemployment payment

One more success story with Claimyr - my friend used it last week to get through to Washington ESD about a benefit calculation error. Agent was able to fix it on the spot and she got her corrected payment within days.
