How many weeks of processing before calling ESD to escalate my claim?
Hi everyone, I'm totally new to the whole unemployment process in WA state. I submitted my initial claim last week and am trying to manage my expectations. I've been scrolling through posts here and it seems like most people are waiting several weeks before even attempting to call ESD about their claims? I'm not sure what's considered "normal" these days and when I should start getting concerned. How many weeks should I reasonably wait before trying to call and get my claim escalated? My rent is due in about 3 weeks so I'm starting to get a bit anxious. Thanks for any advice!

wait at least 3 weeks before calling. thats what i did and my claim was already processing by then. calling earlier is just wasting your time tbh

•Thanks, that's helpful to know. Did your payment arrive soon after it started processing? I'm trying to figure out if I need to dip into my emergency savings or not.

The official guidance from ESD is that claims can take 2-3 weeks for initial processing. However, that's assuming there are no issues requiring adjudication. If your claim goes into adjudication, it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer. I'd suggest checking your eServices account daily to see if there are any alerts or action items. If your claim status doesn't change after 3 weeks, or if it shows 'adjudication in progress' at any point, that's when you might want to start trying to contact ESD.

3 WEEKS?? I waited 3 weeks and then ended up waiting ANOTHER 5 weeks after I finally got through to someone!!! The whole system is designed to make you give up. Don't listen to people saying wait - if you need that money for rent, start calling NOW. Their backlog is insane and by the time they get to your claim it might be too late. Just my 2 cents after getting screwed by the system.

•This isn't entirely accurate advice. Calling too early when your claim is still within normal processing time just clogs up the phone lines for people with older claims who truly need assistance. The system is definitely overloaded, but there's a difference between a claim that's still in normal processing time vs. one that's stuck in adjudication for months.

I filed in January and waited 4 weeks before calling. My claim was actually fine but there was some issue with my identity verification that nobody told me about? So waiting didn't help me at all. If I hadn't called I would have just been sitting there forever probably.

Wait times are variable depending on several factors. Generally speaking, 3-4 weeks is reasonable for initial processing. Here's what I suggest: 1. Check your eServices account daily for any "Pending Issue" alerts 2. Make sure you're completing your weekly claims on time 3. If after 3 weeks your claim still shows as "pending" or "processing" 4. If you see "adjudication" status at any point 5. If you receive any correspondence requesting additional information These are all valid reasons to contact ESD. If you're getting close to your rent due date with no movement, that's also reasonable grounds to try reaching out. Just be prepared for long wait times on the phone.

•Thank you for such a detailed response. This is really helpful. I'll keep an eye on my eServices account like you suggested.

I've been helping people navigate ESD for a while now, and from my experience, if your claim is straightforward (W2 employment, clear layoff, no complicated work history issues), you should see movement within 2-3 weeks. However, if you have any potential issues (multiple employers, quit instead of layoff, part-time work, etc.), it's likely to take longer. If you're worried about making rent, you might want to try reaching Claimyr.com - they offer a service that helps you get through to ESD agents faster. I've recommended it to several friends who were in time-sensitive situations. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 showing how it works. Definitely helped reduce the stress of trying to call repeatedly.

•I'll check out that service if I don't see any progress in the next week or so. My situation should be pretty straightforward - I was laid off after 3 years at the same company. Hopefully that means fewer complications.

•does that service really work? i tried calling like 50 times one day and just gave up

•Yes, it does work. The basic idea is they use technology to wait on hold for you, then call you when they have an ESD agent on the line. Saves hours of frustration, especially during high-volume periods.

One important thing to remember is that regardless of how long your initial claim takes to process, you must continue filing your weekly claims on time. Even if the initial claim is still pending, those weekly certifications are essential. If you miss filing them, you could lose benefits for those weeks even after your claim is approved.

•Thanks for the reminder! I've already started filing my weekly claims even though the initial one is still processing. Glad to know I'm doing something right!
