How long does it take to get unemployment benefits approved through Washington ESD?
I just lost my job last week and filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. I'm wondering how long it typically takes to actually receive benefits once you submit everything? I've heard different things from people - some say a few days, others say weeks. My savings are pretty limited so I'm trying to plan ahead. Has anyone gone through this recently and can share their timeline?

Usually takes about 2-3 weeks if everything goes smoothly. But that's assuming no issues with your claim.

•What kind of issues could come up that would delay it?

•Things like identity verification, work history discrepancies, or if they need to contact your former employer.

I filed mine about 3 weeks ago and still waiting. My claim went into adjudication and I can't get anyone at Washington ESD on the phone to explain what's happening. It's incredibly frustrating.

•That's exactly what I'm worried about! Have you tried calling early in the morning?

•I've tried everything - calling right at 8am, different numbers, even tried the chat feature. Nothing works.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Basically they handle the calling and waiting for you.

•Is this legit? I'm desperate at this point but don't want to get scammed.

•Yeah it's real, I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to someone at Washington ESD within a few hours instead of spending days trying to call.

•How much does something like that cost though?

•It's worth checking out their site for details. For me the time savings was worth it since I was losing money every day my claim was stuck.

The timeline really depends on your specific situation. If you have a simple case - regular layoff, no complications - you might see your first payment in 2-3 weeks. But if there are any red flags or your employer contests the claim, it could take months.

•What would cause an employer to contest it?

•If they think you were fired for misconduct, quit voluntarily, or if there are disputes about your work history or wages.

•That's encouraging! Did you have to do anything special or just wait?

•nah just filed weekly claims and waited. made sure to do the job search stuff they require

MAKE SURE you're doing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval! I almost missed this and it would have delayed everything. You have to certify every week even if you haven't been approved yet.

•Oh wow I didn't know that! Where do you do the weekly claims?

Yuki Kobayashi
•Through your SecureAccess Washington account, same place you filed your initial claim. Don't skip any weeks!

Update: I finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Turns out my claim was stuck because they needed additional wage information from a previous employer. The agent was able to tell me exactly what documents to submit. Wish I had known about this weeks ago!

•That's great! How long did it take them to connect you?

Nia Wilson
•About 3 hours. Way better than the weeks I spent trying to call myself.

•Glad you got answers! That wage verification thing trips up a lot of people.

The whole system is broken honestly. Why should it take weeks to get benefits when people need money right away? Other states process claims much faster than Washington.

•It's frustrating but they have to verify everything to prevent fraud. The volume of claims makes it even slower.

Aisha Mahmood
•I get fraud prevention but there has to be a better way. Meanwhile people can't pay rent.

Thanks everyone for all the info! Sounds like 2-3 weeks is realistic if everything goes smoothly. I'm going to make sure I stay on top of my weekly claims and have that Claimyr service bookmarked just in case.

•Smart plan! Hopefully you won't need it but good to have options if you get stuck.

•Also keep detailed records of everything - when you filed, what documents you submitted, etc. Helps if you need to call later.

My claim took 6 weeks because I had multiple employers in the past year and they had to verify wages from all of them. Just be patient and keep filing weekly claims.

•Six weeks?! That's so long. Did you have to submit extra paperwork?

Carmen Vega
•Yeah, pay stubs and W2s from jobs that weren't in their system automatically. Pain in the butt but eventually got sorted out.

One thing that can really speed things up is making sure all your employer information is accurate when you file. Double-check company names, addresses, dates of employment. Small errors can cause big delays.

•Good point, I should probably review my application to make sure everything matches my records.

Luca Russo
•Exactly! And if you notice an error after filing, don't wait - call to get it corrected ASAP.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? Might be worth it at this point to get some answers about what's holding up your claim.

For anyone waiting, remember you can check your claim status online through SecureAccess Washington. Look for any 'to-do' items or messages from Washington ESD that might need your attention.

•I check mine daily but it just says 'claim filed' with no other details.
0 coins
Ethan Clark
•That's normal for the first couple weeks. If it goes to adjudication, you'll see that status change and usually get more information about what's needed.

Don't forget about the job search requirements! You need to be actively looking for work and keeping records. They can ask for your job search log at any time.

NebulaNinja
•How many jobs do you have to apply for each week?
0 coins
Zoe Stavros
•I think it's 3 job search activities per week, but check the Washington ESD website for current requirements. Can include applications, networking, job fairs, etc.

also make sure you report any work or income during your weekly claims, even small amounts. being dishonest will just cause problems later

•What if you do some freelance work while waiting for benefits?

•report it when you do your weekly claim. they'll adjust your benefits accordingly but better to be honest upfront

The waiting is the worst part. I remember checking my account multiple times a day when I was waiting for approval. Just try to stay busy with job searching and don't let the stress consume you.

NebulaNinja
•Yeah the uncertainty is really stressful. Especially when bills are piling up.

•I know it's hard but try to use this time productively - update your resume, learn new skills, network. The benefits will come eventually.

My sister works for Washington ESD and she says they're still dealing with backlogs from the pandemic. Be patient but don't be afraid to follow up if it's been more than a month.
0 coins
NebulaNinja
•A month seems like a long time to wait before following up. What's considered reasonable?

Jamal Harris
•She said 3-4 weeks is normal processing time, but after that definitely try to get in touch to see if there are any issues.

At least Washington ESD has better customer service than some other government agencies. When you do get through to someone, they're usually helpful.

•True, the agent I spoke with through Claimyr was very knowledgeable and patient. The problem is just getting through to them.

•Exactly! If only they had enough staff to handle all the calls.
