In Washington state, regular unemployment insurance (UI) provides up to 26 weeks of benefits during a benefit year. However, the actual duration depends on your work history and earnings in your base period. You calculate your potential benefit duration by dividing your total base period wages by your weekly benefit amount, up to the 26-week maximum.

•ok so if i made like 40k last year what would that mean for my weekly amount?

•Your weekly benefit amount would be roughly $400-500 depending on your exact base period wages. Washington ESD uses a formula based on your highest earning quarter.

You absolutely need to be job searching the entire time you're collecting benefits. Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job contacts per week and log them in your WorkSourceWA account. If you want to go to school, you'll need approval for a training program or you could lose your benefits.

•damn really? i was hoping to take some time to figure things out. what if i just dont report the school thing?

•DO NOT do that. Washington ESD will find out and you'll have to pay back everything plus penalties. There are legitimate training programs you can get approved for though.

•There's also the able and available requirement. If you're in school full-time, you might not be considered available for work.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks to ask about my benefit duration and it's impossible. Their phone lines are always busy and when I do get through, I get hung up on. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

•Same problem here! I've been calling since 7am every day and can't get through. The system is broken.

•I discovered this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD agents. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. It basically calls for you and gets you connected to an actual person.

TWENTY SIX WEEKS IS NOT ENOUGH!!! I've been unemployed for 8 months now and only got 6 months of benefits. The system is rigged against working people. How are we supposed to survive???

•I feel you but that's just how the system works. You can't collect forever.

•easy for you to say. try finding a decent job in this economy when you're over 50

To clarify the duration calculation: Washington ESD looks at your base period (first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters) and uses your two highest earning quarters. Your maximum benefit duration is 26 weeks, but you might qualify for fewer weeks depending on your earnings pattern.

•what if i only worked like 8 months at my last job? does that affect anything?

Noah Ali
•As long as you have sufficient earnings in your base period, the duration of your last job doesn't matter. It's all about total wages earned during the base period quarters.

just file your weekly claims and look for work. its not that complicated

•thanks for the helpful advice captain obvious

•Actually it can be complicated if you have unique circumstances like going to school or having part-time work.

For the school question - Washington ESD does have approved training programs where you can collect benefits while in school. You need to apply for what's called Training Benefits (TB) approval. This includes things like trade schools, community college programs, and some online certifications.

Layla Mendes
•how do i apply for that? is there a form or something?

Lucas Notre-Dame
•You'd need to contact Washington ESD directly to discuss your specific training program. They have to approve it before you start.

•Good luck getting through to them though. I ended up using Claimyr after trying for weeks and finally got my training benefits approved.

Wait, can you work part-time while collecting unemployment? I might have a chance at some freelance work but don't want to mess up my benefits.

Noah Ali
•Yes, you can work part-time but you must report ALL earnings on your weekly claim. Washington ESD will reduce your benefits based on how much you earn, but you might still get some unemployment benefits.
0 coins
James Martinez
•do they reduce it dollar for dollar?
0 coins
Noah Ali
•No, there's a partial benefit formula. Generally, if you earn less than 1.5 times your weekly benefit amount, you'll still get some unemployment benefits.

One thing people don't realize is that your benefit year is fixed at 52 weeks from when you first file. So if you exhaust your 26 weeks of benefits, you can't just file a new claim immediately - you have to wait until your benefit year ends or qualify for a new claim with recent work.

•so if i use up all 26 weeks i cant get more unemployment for another 26 weeks?
0 coins
Aria Park
•Exactly, unless you've worked enough to qualify for a new claim or there are special extended benefits available.

Update: I finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr thing someone mentioned. Took about 20 minutes but they connected me to an actual agent who answered all my questions about benefit duration. Way better than calling manually for hours.

Layla Mendes
•did it cost anything to use?

Chloe Boulanger
•Yeah there's a fee but honestly worth it compared to the hours I was wasting trying to call myself. They have the details on their website.

the whole system is designed to kick you off benefits as fast as possible. they make the job search requirements impossible and then act like its your fault when you cant find work

•3 job contacts a week isn't impossible. just apply to stuff online

For anyone wondering about extensions - Washington state doesn't currently have any extended benefit programs active. The federal extensions from the pandemic ended in 2021. So right now it's just the standard 26 weeks maximum.

Layla Mendes
•so theres no way to get more than 26 weeks? what if unemployment is really high?
0 coins
Lucas Notre-Dame
•There are federal extended benefit programs that can activate during high unemployment periods, but they're not active right now in Washington.

Quick tip for the OP: when you file your initial claim, pay close attention to your monetary determination letter. This will show exactly how many weeks of benefits you're eligible for and your weekly benefit amount. Don't assume you'll get the full 26 weeks.

Layla Mendes
•when do you get that letter? is it mailed or online?
0 coins
Noah Ali
•You should get it within a week of filing your claim. It'll be available in your Washington ESD online account and usually mailed as well.

26 weeks is plenty of time to find a job if you actually try. people just get comfortable collecting benefits

•what planet are you living on? try finding a job that pays enough to live on in seattle

•The job market varies a lot by industry and location. 26 weeks might be enough for some people but not others.

does anyone know if the 26 weeks includes the waiting week? i heard there used to be a waiting week where you didnt get paid
0 coins
Lucas Notre-Dame
•Washington eliminated the waiting week in 2020. So now you can get benefits starting from your first week of unemployment if you're eligible.

James Martinez
•oh good, i was worried about that

Another thing I learned from talking to the Washington ESD agent - if you move to another state while collecting benefits, it can affect your claim. You need to notify them and follow their interstate claim procedures.

•what if you just go on vacation for a week?
0 coins
Chloe Boulanger
•Short vacations are usually ok but you need to be available for work. If you're out of state and can't accept a job offer, you might not get benefits for that week.
0 coins
Aria Park
Bottom line for the OP: File your claim as soon as possible since there's no waiting week. You'll get up to 26 weeks of benefits if you qualify. You must actively search for work and report it weekly. If you want to go to school, get it approved first. And don't lie about anything on your weekly claims.

Layla Mendes
•thanks this is really helpful. sounds like i need to just file and see what happens
0 coins
Aria Park
•Exactly. The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator tool that can give you an estimate of your weekly amount too.

One last thing - keep detailed records of all your job search activities. Washington ESD can audit your claim at any time and ask for proof of your work search efforts. Save job postings, applications, contact information, etc.

•how long do i need to keep that stuff?

Lucas Notre-Dame
•I'd keep it for at least a year after your claim ends, just to be safe.
