How do you collect unemployment benefits in Washington - complete beginner here
I just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant after 2 years and have no idea how to collect unemployment benefits. I've never filed for unemployment before and the Washington ESD website is pretty confusing. Can someone walk me through the basic steps? Do I need to apply right away or can I wait a few days? Also heard something about weekly claims - what's that about?

You need to file your initial claim as soon as possible after your last day of work. Don't wait! Go to esd.wa.gov and click on 'Apply for Benefits.' You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including dates and wages. The process takes about 30-45 minutes.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or will they verify my wages automatically?

Zoe Papanikolaou
•They'll verify most wages automatically through their system, but keep your pay stubs handy just in case they ask for additional documentation.

After you file your initial claim, you have to file weekly claims every week to get paid. This is super important - if you miss filing a weekly claim, you won't get benefits for that week. You can file online or by phone starting Sunday for the previous week.

•What kind of questions do they ask on the weekly claims?

•Basic stuff like did you work, did you look for work, are you able and available to work. Pretty straightforward once you get used to it.

One thing that helped me a lot when I was dealing with Washington ESD was using Claimyr to actually get through to a real person when I had questions. The regular phone lines are always busy but they have a way to get you connected faster. Check out claimyr.com - there's even a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How much does that cost? I'm already stressed about money.

•It's definitely worth it when you need answers fast. Way better than sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected.

•I'll keep that in mind if I run into problems. Hopefully the online system works smoothly for me.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements! In Washington you need to do at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. This includes applying for jobs, networking, going to job fairs, etc. Keep detailed records because they can audit you.

•Do I start the job search requirement right away or is there a waiting period?

Amara Nnamani
•You start immediately. No waiting period for job search activities. The sooner you start looking, the better.

ugh the whole system is so confusing when you're new to it. I remember being overwhelmed too. Just take it one step at a time and don't panic if your claim goes into adjudication - that's normal for a lot of people

•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.

Zoe Papanikolaou
•Adjudication just means they need to review something about your claim before approving it. Could be verifying your employment history or the reason you lost your job. It can take a few weeks but don't worry.

Also register with WorkSource Washington (worksourcewa.com) right away. It's required and they have job search tools and resources that count toward your weekly job search activities.

•Is that separate from the unemployment claim or part of the same process?

NebulaNinja
•It's separate but required. You'll get instructions about it after you file your claim. Pretty easy to register though.

One thing nobody tells you is that your first week is usually a waiting week where you don't get paid even if you're eligible. So don't expect money right away.

•How long does it typically take to get your first payment?

Liam Fitzgerald
•If everything goes smoothly, about 2-3 weeks from when you file. Longer if your claim needs adjudication.

Make sure you have all your employer information ready when you apply - company name, address, supervisor name, dates of employment, reason for separation. The more accurate info you provide upfront, the smoother the process goes.

•I have most of that but not sure about my supervisor's full name. Will that be a problem?

Jamal Wilson
•Just put what you know. They can contact the employer directly if they need more details.

Don't forget to report any severance pay or vacation payout you received. That can affect when your benefits start. Better to report it upfront than have problems later.

•I got two weeks severance. Does that mean I have to wait two weeks to file?
0 coins
Fatima Al-Suwaidi
•No, file right away but report the severance. They'll calculate how it affects your benefits timing.

Another tip - set up your online account with a strong password and write it down somewhere safe. You'll be logging in every week and if you get locked out, it can be a pain to reset.

•Good point. I always forget passwords. Is there a mobile app or do you have to use the website?

Mei Lin
•Just the website as far as I know. Make sure to bookmark it - esd.wa.gov

Keep copies of everything you submit and take screenshots of confirmation pages. If there are any issues later, you'll want proof of what you filed and when.

•That's smart. I learned that lesson the hard way with other government stuff.

honestly the hardest part is just getting started. once you file that first claim and do a couple weekly claims it becomes routine. don't overthink it too much

•Thanks, that's reassuring. I tend to overthink everything when I'm stressed.

One more important thing - if you have any questions or run into problems, don't just guess or assume. Either call Washington ESD or use a service like the one mentioned earlier to get through to them. Wrong assumptions can mess up your benefits.

QuantumQuasar
•Yeah I definitely don't want to mess anything up. Better to ask than guess.

•Exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. Sometimes you really need to talk to a human and their regular lines are impossible to get through.

Also be prepared for the possibility that your claim might get flagged for identity verification. They're pretty strict about that now. You might need to upload documents or do a video call to verify who you are.

QuantumQuasar
•What kind of documents do they want for identity verification?

NebulaNinja
•Usually driver's license, Social Security card, maybe utility bills or bank statements. They'll tell you exactly what they need if it comes up.

Just remember that unemployment is not charity - you earned this benefit through your work history. Don't feel bad about using it, that's what it's there for.

•I needed to hear that. I do feel weird about it even though I know I shouldn't.

Liam Fitzgerald
•Totally normal to feel that way but you paid into the system through your taxes. It's your safety net.

If you're thinking about doing any part-time or temporary work while collecting benefits, make sure you understand how that affects your weekly benefit amount. You can work and still collect partial benefits in most cases.
0 coins
QuantumQuasar
•That's good to know. I wasn't sure if working at all would disqualify me.
0 coins
Jamal Wilson
•Nope, they just reduce your benefit amount based on what you earn. Still worth doing if you can find work.

Last tip - if you move or change your contact information while collecting benefits, update it immediately in your account. They need to be able to reach you and mail can get lost.

•Good reminder. I might be moving in a few months so I'll keep that in mind.

The whole process seems overwhelming at first but thousands of people do this successfully every week. You'll figure it out. Just file that initial claim ASAP and take it one step at a time.

One final thought - if you do end up needing to reach Washington ESD by phone for any reason and can't get through on their regular lines, definitely check out that Claimyr service I mentioned. It saved me hours of frustration when I had an adjudication issue to resolve.
