ESD website won't let me file appeal - need direct phone number to bypass auto-hangup

I just got a disqualification letter on my ESD claim 4 days ago and I'm trying to file an appeal, but the website keeps giving me an error message saying 'appeal cannot be processed at this time'. I've tried on different browsers and even on my phone but nothing works. Every time I call the main ESD number, the automated system just hangs up after saying they're experiencing high call volume! Has anyone successfully gotten through to a real human recently? Is there a specific number or extension to bypass that annoying machine? I only have 26 days left to file this appeal and I'm getting really worried.

The ESD phone system is basically DESIGNED to prevent you from talking to anyone. I was in your exact situation last month - got disqualified because they said I didn't do enough job searches (I DID!!). Try calling right when they open at 8am, but even then you'll probably get hung up on 10+ times. The appeal deadline is no joke though, they won't make exceptions if you miss it. The whole system is rigged against us.

I tried calling right at 8am today and still got the hang-up message! This is so frustrating. Did you eventually get through?

Your appeal rights are protected by law, so don't panic yet. There are three approaches you can take: 1. Instead of using the online appeal system, you can download and print the appeal form from the ESD website (look for form ESD 5000). Mail it certified with return receipt to the address on the determination letter. 2. Email your appeal to the OAH directly at oah@oah.wa.gov - include your full name, claim ID number, and the determination date you're appealing. Keep proof of sending the email. 3. For phone contact, you can try calling the Office of Administrative Hearings directly at 360-407-2700 rather than ESD. They handle the appeal hearings and can sometimes provide guidance.

Thank you so much! I had no idea I could mail in my appeal. I'm going to print that form right now. Do you know if there's any way to confirm they received it after I mail it? The determination letter says something about my separation from my employer not qualifying for benefits.

I had a similar issue with filing an appeal last month. After days of frustration with the automated system, I found Claimyr.com which got me connected to an ESD agent within 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The agent was able to see that there was a technical flag on my account preventing online appeals, and they removed it so I could submit through the portal. If you're running out of time for your appeal deadline, it might be worth checking out. Appeals are too important to miss the deadline on.

Thank you! I'll check this out right now. Did you have to explain anything special to the agent when you got through?

Just explained that the website wasn't letting me file an appeal and kept giving an error. Had my determination ID number ready (it's on your disqualification letter) and they were able to look it up. The agent said it's a common technical issue that happens when there are multiple issues being processed on one claim.

That Claimyr thing actually works? I thought it was just another scam trying to take advantage of desperate unemployed people. The entire ESD system is broken by design to discourage people from getting benefits they're entitled to.

Yeah, it worked for me. I was skeptical too but was desperate after calling for days. Not saying it's the only solution (the mailed form suggestion is good too), but if you need to talk to someone quickly it does what it promises.

Hey there! Just want to add that whatever method you choose, make sure you get some kind of confirmation. If you mail the appeal form, definitely use certified mail with tracking. If you call and speak to an agent, write down their name, ID number and the date/time you spoke with them. I learned this the hard way when ESD claimed they never received my appeal even though I had submitted it online. Luckily I had taken screenshots of the confirmation page. Also, start preparing your evidence for the hearing now - gather pay stubs, communication with your employer, your job search logs, etc. The OAH will eventually schedule a telephone hearing and you'll want all your documents ready to go. Good luck with your appeal!

That's really helpful advice, thank you! I'll definitely keep detailed records of everything. Already starting to gather my evidence now. I was able to get through to an agent today using the Claimyr service, and they fixed whatever was blocking my online appeal. Just submitted it and got a confirmation number!

Does anyone know if you can still file weekly claims while waiting for the appeal to be resolved? I'm in a similar situation and confused about whether I should keep claiming each week.

Yes, absolutely continue filing your weekly claims while your appeal is pending! This is extremely important. If you win your appeal, ESD can only pay you for weeks you properly claimed, even if you were eligible otherwise. If you don't file weekly claims during the appeal process, you could lose benefits even if you win the appeal.

Update: I was able to get through to ESD using Claimyr and they fixed the technical issue on my account. Just submitted my appeal online and got a confirmation number! The agent said this happens sometimes when there are multiple issues being processed on one claim. Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions! Now I just need to prepare for the hearing...

That's great news! Make sure you check your mail and email frequently over the next few weeks. The OAH will send instructions about your hearing date and how to submit evidence. Don't miss those deadlines! Also, when the hearing happens, be super organized and stick to the facts - the judges appreciate concise, clear explanations.
