ESD claim shows 'disqualified' but I received approval letter - what's going on?

I'm totally confused right now. When I check my unemployment claim online, it shows as 'disqualified', but I just got this letter in the mail saying they approved my benefits from Dec 8, 2024 to Jan 11, 2025. The letter also mentions that I had 'a good reason to file late weeks' (I missed filing for 2 weeks because I was in the hospital). It says I might have 'other issues' preventing payment but doesn't explain what those are. Should I keep filing weekly claims? Call ESD? Wait for more letters? Has anyone dealt with this kind of mixed message before?

this happened 2 me last month!! the online status often doesn't update right away after they make a decision. keep filing ur weekly claims no matter what!! take pictures of that letter too just in case

Thanks, that's a relief to hear. Did you eventually get paid after seeing the disqualified status? How long did it take for everything to update correctly?

What you're experiencing is actually pretty common with ESD. The online system sometimes shows 'disqualified' as a default status while they're processing different decisions about your claim. The letter you received approves your late filing reason, but there might be other issues they're still working on. You should: 1. Definitely keep filing your weekly claims 2. Check if there are any 'Alert' messages or action items in your eServices account 3. Look for additional letters that might explain specific disqualifications ESD often sends multiple determination letters for different aspects of your claim. The approval you received is just for the late filing issue, not necessarily for your entire claim eligibility.

That makes more sense now. I just checked and there is an alert about verifying my identity. Would that be what's preventing payment even though they approved the late filing?

I went through this exact situation back in October!! The online status said disqualified for WEEKS even after I got an approval letter. It was because I had two separate issues - the late filing (which they approved) and an employer dispute (which was still in adjudication). KEEP FILING YOUR WEEKLY CLAIMS!!! If they eventually approve everything, they'll pay you retroactively for all the weeks you filed. If you don't file, you won't get paid for those weeks even if they approve your claim later.

This is correct information. The 'disqualified' status often applies to the entire claim while individual issues are being resolved. ESD's system isn't great at showing the nuances of a claim with multiple issues. The letter specifically mentioned other potential issues, which is standard language when one issue is resolved but others remain open.

Have you tried calling ESD directly??? I know its impossible to get through but I was in a similar situation and NEEDED to talk to someone. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an ESD agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending days redialing. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The agent explained that my claim had multiple issues and each one gets reviewed separately. The online status only shows the worst status until ALL issues are resolved. Seriously worth calling to get clarity instead of waiting and stressing!

Is that service legit? Seems sketchy to pay someone just to call ESD for you. Has anyone else used it?

THE SAME EXACT THING just happened to me last week!!! ESD's system is so BROKEN! My online status said "disqualified" but I got an approval letter for my illness absence issue. Then 3 days later I got ANOTHER letter saying I was disqualified because my former employer said I quit (which is a LIE, I was laid off). So now I'm appealing that decision while also trying to get paid for the approved part. It's MADDENING! The left hand doesn't know what the right is doing at ESD. Prepare yourself for possibly more letters coming with conflicting information!

Oh no, that sounds like a nightmare! Did you keep filing weekly claims during all of this? I'm worried I'll go through the same thing since my employer might contest my claim too.

To clarify what's happening: 1. Your claim had at least two issues: late filing (now approved) and likely another issue causing the disqualification status 2. Common secondary issues include: - Identity verification requirements - Employer contesting the claim - Work search requirements - Able and available requirements - Separation reason determination 3. Each issue is reviewed separately, and you'll receive a determination letter for each 4. The online system shows the most restrictive status (disqualified) until all issues are resolved 5. You should continue filing weekly claims while waiting for resolution Check your ESD correspondence inbox online for any additional letters that may have been sent electronically instead of by mail. Also check your "Upload Documents" section to see if they're requesting any verification documents.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation. I just checked my online correspondence and found they ARE requesting identity verification documents. I'll upload those right away. Hopefully that resolves the disqualification status.

anyone else notice how ESD always sends the GOOD news in the mail but puts the BAD news (like document requests) online where u might miss it?? seems shady tbh

YES!! I've been saying this for MONTHS! They make it so complicated ON PURPOSE so people give up and don't get their benefits. I'm convinced of it! My friend missed an important document request because it was ONLY online and nowhere else and then got denied because of "failure to respond" when she never even knew about it!!

It sounds like you've identified the issue now - the identity verification requirement. This is very common and explains the seemingly contradictory information. Here's what will happen: 1. Once you upload your identity documents, they'll go into a verification queue 2. This can take 1-3 weeks to process (sometimes longer during busy periods) 3. If your identity is verified, that issue will be resolved 4. If all other issues are resolved (like your late filing already is), your status should change from disqualified to paid 5. You'll receive all back payments for weeks you've claimed once everything is resolved Keep an eye on your online account for status changes and any additional requests for information.

I uploaded my driver's license and social security card. Does that usually work for identity verification or do they need more documents? And will they notify me when verification is complete or do I just have to keep checking my account?

Driver's license and social security card should be sufficient for identity verification in most cases. Occasionally they request additional documentation if they can't verify with those documents alone. You may not receive a separate notification when your identity is verified - often, you'll simply see your claim status change and payments issued. I recommend checking your account every 2-3 days. If it's been more than 3 weeks since uploading your documents with no change in status, then it would be appropriate to contact ESD directly. The current average processing time for identity verification is about 10-14 days, but this varies based on current claim volume.

Perfect, thank you! I'll be patient and keep checking my account while continuing to file my weekly claims. You've all been incredibly helpful. I was so confused and stressed before posting here.

Just wanted to add that I went through almost the exact same situation a few months ago! The key thing is DON'T PANIC when you see conflicting information from ESD - their system is notorious for showing outdated or incomplete status updates. In my case, I had three separate issues on my claim: late filing (approved), identity verification (took 2 weeks), and a work search waiver request (took another week). Each one got resolved at different times, but my online status stayed "disqualified" until the LAST issue was cleared. The most important advice: screenshot/save EVERYTHING. Save that approval letter, take photos of any documents you upload, and keep records of when you file weekly claims. If there are any problems later, you'll have proof of what happened when. Also, even though the online system is frustrating, try to check it at least twice a week for any new messages or document requests. Sometimes they'll add requirements without sending you a notification. Hang in there - it sounds like you're on the right track with uploading your identity documents!

Thank you Anna, this is exactly what I needed to hear! It's so reassuring to know that multiple people have been through this same confusing process. I've already started taking screenshots of everything and saved that approval letter in multiple places. Your point about checking twice a week is really good - I was only checking once a week before but I'll increase that now. It's frustrating that ESD's system works this way but at least now I know what to expect. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience!

I'm dealing with something similar right now! My claim has been showing "disqualified" for 3 weeks but I got an approval letter for my separation issue. Turns out I also had an identity verification requirement that I completely missed because it was buried in the online messages. One thing that helped me was setting up text notifications through eServices - you can get alerts when new messages are posted to your account. It's under the "Contact Preferences" section. That way you won't miss any document requests or updates like I almost did. Also, when you upload your identity documents, make sure the images are super clear and all four corners of each document are visible. I had to resubmit mine because my first photos were too blurry. Keep filing those weekly claims no matter what the status says online! The system really is that confusing but everyone here is right - you'll get back pay for all the weeks you filed once everything gets sorted out.

This is such great advice about the text notifications! I had no idea that feature existed. I just went and set it up - hopefully that will help me catch any future messages right away instead of potentially missing them like you did. Your point about making sure the document photos are crystal clear is really helpful too. I was just about to upload some quick phone photos but now I'll make sure to take my time and get really good quality images with all corners visible. Thanks for sharing your experience - it's amazing how many people have dealt with this exact same confusing situation with ESD's system!

I just went through this exact same thing 2 months ago! My online status showed "disqualified" for almost 6 weeks even though I had gotten approval letters for some issues. It turns out ESD's system is just really bad at showing partial approvals - it defaults to the most restrictive status until EVERYTHING is cleared. Here's what I learned: 1) Keep filing weekly no matter what the online status says, 2) Check your online messages religiously because they often put time-sensitive requests there, 3) Save/screenshot every single document and letter you get, and 4) Be patient because each issue gets resolved separately. The identity verification you found is probably the main thing holding up your payments now. Once that's processed (usually 1-2 weeks), your status should flip to approved and you'll get all your back pay. The system really is this confusing for everyone - you're not alone in feeling frustrated by the mixed messages!
