ESD asking about union dispatch/bids after I started new job - how to report correctly?
I was part of a plumbers union for almost 4 years but resigned my membership about 2 months ago. When I initially filed for unemployment, I clearly indicated that I had left the union. I've been filing weekly claims since then, but something weird happened with this week's claim. Now ESD is suddenly asking me questions about union dispatch and bids that never appeared before. If I select 'no,' it'll take me to the job search activities section, but I actually started a new non-union job last week (thank goodness!). I'm confused about how to accurately report this situation without messing up my claim for the days I was still unemployed before starting work. Should I just answer 'no' to the dispatch question and then report my new employment in the earnings section? I don't want to get flagged for misreporting anything since I was legitimately unemployed for part of the claim week.

Congrats on the new job! For your weekly claim, you need to accurately report the days you worked and how much you earned at your new job. Answer 'no' to the union dispatch questions since you're no longer in the union. Then in the earnings section, report the days worked and wages earned from your new job. ESD will calculate partial benefits for the days you weren't working. Make sure to enter the exact start date of your new employment when it asks. If you were unemployed for part of the week and working for part, you might still qualify for partial benefits depending on how much you earned.

•Thanks so much! That makes sense. I'll make sure to report the exact dates and earnings. Do you know if I need to call them to explain why they're suddenly asking about union dispatch when I've already reported leaving the union? I'm worried about this triggering some kind of review of my claim.

•That's reassuring! Did you have any issues with your payments after answering these questions? I'm just nervous about delays since I still need the partial payment for the days before I started working.

BE SUPER CAREFUL!! ESD flags EVERYTHING these days! I got hit with an overpayment notice because I answered a question wrong on my weekly claim during the week I started a new job. The system is designed to trip us up so they can claw back benefits. If you're uncertain, CALL THEM DIRECTLY before submitting! I know it's hard to get through but worth it to avoid the nightmare I went through.

I dealt with this exact situation last year. The ESD system sometimes maintains outdated information about your union status in your profile. Here's what you should do: 1. Answer 'no' to the union dispatch questions 2. Report your new employment accurately in the earnings section 3. Include the exact date you started working 4. Report your earnings for the days you worked You'll still be eligible for partial benefits for the days you weren't working, as long as your earnings for the week don't exceed your weekly benefit amount. The system will automatically calculate this. If you want to update your union status in the system to avoid these questions in the future, you'll need to call ESD directly or submit a message through your eServices account.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! This is exactly what I needed to know. I'll follow these steps for my claim. Do you think it's worth sending a message through eServices to update my union status, or since I'm working now it doesn't really matter anymore?

I tried calling ESD for WEEKS when I had a similar issue with reporting my partial employment. Literally could never get through. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an actual ESD rep in like 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Totally worth it for peace of mind when you're dealing with something that could affect your benefits.

As someone who processes UI claims (not for ESD though), I can tell you that the most important thing is to report your earnings accurately for the week. When you answer 'no' to the union questions, it will just proceed to the regular work search questions. However, since you've started working, you'll need to report: - The exact days worked - Gross earnings (before taxes) for those days - The date you started your new job - The employer information The system will then calculate if you're eligible for partial benefits for the days you didn't work. Just make sure you're reporting gross earnings, not take-home pay. Many people make this mistake and it can lead to overpayment notices later.

•Thank you for the insider perspective! I'll definitely report my gross earnings correctly. I worked 3 days at the new job during the claim week. For the other days, do I still need to report job search activities even though I've already secured employment?

To answer your follow-up question - yes, you should still report job search activities for the days you weren't working at your new job. ESD requires you to meet the job search requirements for any week you're claiming benefits, even partial benefits. Since you've started working, you can actually list your successful job search that led to this position as one of your activities if it falls within the week you're claiming.

Just an update - I finally got my claim resolved using the Claimyr service that someone mentioned above. Got through to ESD in about 15 minutes after trying for DAYS on my own. The agent said I'd done everything right but there was a system flag on my account because my previous employer disputed something. Might be worth checking if you have anything similar going on with yours.

•Thanks for the update! I ended up getting through to ESD and everything's been sorted out now. For anyone else reading this in the future - I did exactly what was suggested here (answered no to union questions, reported my exact work days and earnings) and received partial benefits for the days I wasn't working. The system calculated everything correctly.
