Does collecting unemployment affect you in Washington ESD long term?

I've been on unemployment for about 2 months now and I'm wondering if collecting benefits will affect me down the road. Like will it show up on background checks for jobs? Will it hurt my credit score? I've heard mixed things from people and I'm starting to worry that filing for UI might have been a mistake. Has anyone had issues with this later on?

No, collecting unemployment benefits won't affect your credit score at all. It's not a loan or debt, it's insurance you paid into through your payroll taxes. As for background checks, most employers can't see your unemployment history unless you're applying for a government job that requires extensive screening.

That's a relief about the credit score thing. I was really worried about that.

0 coins

Yeah I was wondering the same thing when I first filed. Turns out it's totally fine.

0 coins

I've been collecting UI on and off for years (construction work) and it's never affected me getting hired anywhere. The only thing that might show up is if you're applying for a federal job or something that requires a security clearance, but even then it's not necessarily a problem.

0 coins

Good to know. I work in tech so hopefully that won't be an issue.

0 coins

Construction here too, never had a problem with background checks because of unemployment.

0 coins

The only real 'effect' is that you'll owe taxes on the benefits at the end of the year if you didn't have them withhold taxes. But other than that, no long-term consequences at all.

0 coins

Oh yeah I did have them withhold taxes, so that should be covered.

0 coins

I forgot to do that my first time and got hit with a big tax bill. Definitely recommend having them withhold.

I was actually stressed about this same thing when I first started collecting. I ended up using Claimyr to get through to an Washington ESD agent to ask about it directly. They confirmed what everyone else is saying - it doesn't affect your credit or show up on most background checks. The service made it so much easier to actually talk to someone instead of waiting on hold forever. Check out their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ if you want to see how it works.

0 coins

Thanks for the info! How does that service work exactly?

0 coins

You just go to claimyr.com and they handle calling Washington ESD for you. Way better than spending hours on hold.

0 coins

honestly the biggest effect is just the peace of mind knowing you have some income while job hunting. I wish I hadn't waited so long to file when I first got laid off

0 coins

Yeah that's true, it definitely helps with the stress of being unemployed.

0 coins

Same here, I was too proud at first and it just made everything harder.

0 coins

The only time it might 'affect' you is if you're collecting benefits and then get a job offer. You need to report that income to Washington ESD right away or you could get in trouble for overpayment.

0 coins

Good point, I'll definitely remember that when I start getting interviews.

0 coins

Yeah overpayment issues are no joke. Always report everything accurately.

0 coins

I've collected unemployment 3 different times over the past 10 years and never had any issues. Got hired at good companies each time, no questions asked about my unemployment history.

0 coins

That's really reassuring to hear from someone with experience.

0 coins

Same experience here, it's really not a big deal at all.

0 coins

The only negative effect I can think of is if you get too comfortable on unemployment and stop looking for work seriously. But that's more of a personal discipline thing than a system problem.

0 coins

Yeah I'm definitely staying active with my job search. Don't want to get too comfortable.

0 coins

Good attitude. The job search requirements help with that too.

0 coins

I actually think collecting unemployment made me a better candidate because I used the time to take some online courses and improve my skills. Employers seemed to appreciate that I was being productive during my job search.

0 coins

That's a great idea! I should look into some courses too.

0 coins

Yeah I did the same thing, took some certifications that helped me get a better job.

0 coins

Don't let anyone make you feel bad about collecting unemployment either. You paid into this system through your payroll taxes, so you earned these benefits. There's absolutely nothing wrong with using them when you need them.

0 coins

Thanks, I needed to hear that. Some people have made comments that made me feel guilty.

0 coins

People who say that don't understand how the system works. Ignore them.

0 coins

The biggest positive effect for me was being able to be selective about job offers instead of taking the first thing that came along out of desperation. Led to a much better job match.

0 coins

That's exactly what I'm hoping for. I want to find something that's really a good fit.

0 coins

Same here, unemployment gave me time to find the right opportunity.

0 coins

Just make sure you keep up with your weekly claims and job search requirements. The only way it could affect you negatively is if you mess up the paperwork or don't follow the rules.

0 coins

Yeah I've been really careful about filing on time and documenting my job searches.

0 coins

Good, consistency is key with Washington ESD.

0 coins

One thing to consider is that if you have a gap in your resume, you can honestly say you were actively job searching during that time. It's not like you were just sitting around doing nothing.

0 coins

That's a good point about how to explain the gap in interviews.

0 coins

Most employers understand that layoffs happen and people need time to find new work.

0 coins

I had a friend who was worried about the same thing and ended up calling Washington ESD through some service called Claimyr because he couldn't get through the regular phone lines. They told him the same thing everyone's saying here - no long-term effects on credit or employment background checks.

0 coins

Yeah someone else mentioned that service too. Sounds like it might be worth checking out.

0 coins

I've heard good things about Claimyr, especially for getting through to actual people at Washington ESD.

0 coins

The system is designed to help people during temporary unemployment, not to punish them later. If it affected people negatively, it would defeat the whole purpose of having unemployment insurance.

0 coins

That makes perfect sense when you put it that way.

0 coins

Exactly, it's insurance that we all pay into for situations like this.

0 coins

I think some people confuse unemployment with welfare or other assistance programs. Unemployment is insurance you earned through working and paying taxes. Completely different thing.

0 coins

Yeah I think that's where some of the stigma comes from.

0 coins

Exactly, it's not charity, it's insurance benefits you paid for.

0 coins

The only advice I'd give is to keep good records of everything - your job search activities, any correspondence with Washington ESD, etc. Just in case you ever need to prove you were following the rules.

0 coins

Good idea, I'll make sure to keep better records of my job search activities.

0 coins

Yeah documentation is always important with any government program.

0 coins

Bottom line: collecting unemployment when you're eligible won't hurt you. It's there to help people get back on their feet, not to create problems for them later.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the reassurance. I feel much better about this now.

0 coins

Good luck with your job search! You've got this.

0 coins

I actually got a better job after collecting unemployment than I had before. Used the time to network and really think about what I wanted to do next. Sometimes getting laid off is a blessing in disguise.

0 coins

That's inspiring! Maybe this will turn out to be a good thing for me too.

0 coins

That's awesome that it worked out even better for you in the end.

0 coins

Just remember that you're not alone in this. Millions of people collect unemployment every year and go on to have successful careers. It's a normal part of the working world these days.

0 coins

Thank you, that really helps put things in perspective.

0 coins

Especially with how unstable the job market has been, unemployment is just part of life now.
