Can you work and get unemployment at the same time in Washington ESD?

I just got offered a part-time job that's only 15 hours a week, but I'm still collecting unemployment benefits from Washington ESD. I'm confused about whether I can work part-time and still get some unemployment money. I don't want to mess up my claim or get in trouble for fraud. Has anyone else worked while on unemployment? Do I need to report the hours and wages on my weekly claim? I really need the extra income but I'm scared to do anything wrong with my UI benefits.

Yes, you can work part-time while collecting unemployment in Washington state. You need to report ALL hours worked and gross wages earned on your weekly claim filing. Washington ESD will reduce your weekly benefit amount based on how much you earn. Generally, they subtract 75% of your gross wages from your weekly benefit amount, but you can still receive partial benefits as long as your earnings don't exceed your weekly benefit amount plus $5.

Thank you! So if my weekly benefit is $400 and I earn $200 from part-time work, they would subtract $150 (75% of $200) from my $400 benefit, leaving me with $250 in unemployment benefits plus my $200 wages?

0 coins

Exactly right! That's how the calculation works. Just make sure you report everything accurately on your weekly claim.

I've been doing this for months - working part-time and getting partial unemployment. The key is being 100% honest about your hours and wages. Never try to hide work income because Washington ESD will find out eventually through wage matching systems. I report every penny I earn and every hour I work on my weekly claims.

How long does it usually take for them to process the weekly claim when you report work? I'm worried about delays.

0 coins

Usually processes the same as regular claims - within 1-2 business days. Sometimes there might be a brief delay if it's your first time reporting work income, but nothing major.

I was in a similar situation last year and kept trying to call Washington ESD to make sure I was doing everything right, but could never get through. The phone lines are always busy and I'd get disconnected after waiting forever. Super frustrating when you just need to talk to someone about your specific situation.

I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents without all the waiting and busy signals. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Made my life so much easier when I needed to talk to someone about reporting work income.

0 coins

That sounds too good to be true. How does it actually work?

0 coins

It's legitimate - they basically call for you and connect you when they get through. No more sitting on hold for hours or getting hung up on.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too. Even if you're working part-time, you still need to be actively looking for full-time work and completing your required job search activities each week. Don't skip that part just because you have some work income.

0 coins

Good point! I forgot about that. So I still need to do 3 job search activities per week even though I'm working 15 hours?

0 coins

Yes, unless your part-time job is considered 'suitable work' that could lead to full-time employment in your field. But generally, yes, you still need to meet job search requirements.

0 coins

Been there done that. The math gets confusing but it's worth it. Just remember to keep detailed records of all your work - hours, wages, dates. If Washington ESD ever audits your claim, you'll need proof of what you reported.

0 coins

What kind of records should we keep exactly?

0 coins

Pay stubs, timesheets, any written communication about your work schedule. I keep a simple spreadsheet with dates, hours worked, and gross pay for each week.

0 coins

Wait, so you can work AND get unemployment? I thought it was one or the other. This is news to me.

0 coins

It's partial unemployment benefits. You can work part-time and still receive reduced unemployment benefits as long as your work income isn't too high.

0 coins

Wish I'd known this earlier. I turned down a part-time job thinking I'd lose all my benefits.

0 coins

The system is actually designed to encourage people to take part-time work while looking for full-time employment. It's better than sitting at home doing nothing, and you get to keep some of your unemployment benefits while earning extra income.

0 coins

That makes sense. Gives people incentive to work instead of just collecting benefits.

0 coins

Exactly. Plus you're building work experience and keeping your skills sharp.

0 coins

I did this for about 6 months. One thing to watch out for - if your part-time job starts giving you too many hours, you might become ineligible for unemployment benefits altogether. Keep track of your weekly earnings vs your weekly benefit amount.

0 coins

What's considered 'too many hours'? Is there a specific limit?

0 coins

It's not about hours, it's about earnings. If you earn more than your weekly benefit amount plus $5, you won't get any unemployment that week.

0 coins

Whatever you do, DON'T try to hide the income. I know someone who thought they could work under the table and still collect full benefits. Washington ESD caught them and they had to pay back thousands in overpayments plus penalties.

0 coins

How did they get caught?

0 coins

Cross-matching with employer wage reports. The state gets copies of all wage information from employers.

0 coins

The weekly claim asks specifically about work and wages. Just answer honestly. I've been doing part-time work for 3 months now and never had any problems with my claims.

0 coins

Do you file your weekly claim on the same day each week?

0 coins

Yep, every Sunday like clockwork. Makes it easier to remember what I worked the previous week.

0 coins

Pro tip: When you report work income, the system might take an extra day or two to process your payment compared to weeks when you don't work. Don't panic if your payment is slightly delayed - it's normal.

0 coins

Good to know! I was wondering about that.

I tried calling Washington ESD multiple times to confirm how to report part-time work correctly but could never reach anyone. Finally used Claimyr to get connected to an agent who explained everything perfectly. Worth checking out if you need to speak with someone directly.

0 coins

How much does that service cost?

0 coins

I focused on the value of actually reaching someone rather than the cost. When you really need answers about your claim, it's worth it to talk to a real person.

0 coins

Make sure your part-time employer knows you're on unemployment. Some employers are weird about that, but there's nothing illegal about it. You're allowed to work part-time while receiving benefits.

0 coins

Do we have to tell our employer about the unemployment benefits?

0 coins

Not required, but it's good to be upfront about your availability and that you're still job searching for full-time work.

0 coins

Been working part-time and collecting partial benefits for 4 months now. It's actually nice to have some structure and extra income while still looking for a full-time position. Just follow the rules and report everything accurately.

0 coins

Any tips for managing the job search requirements while working part-time?

0 coins

I do my job search activities on my days off from the part-time job. Keeps everything organized and I don't feel rushed.

0 coins

The Washington ESD website has a pretty good explanation of working while on unemployment if you want to read the official policy. But basically, yes, you can work part-time and still get reduced benefits.

0 coins

Link to that info?

0 coins

Just go to the main Washington ESD site and search for 'working while on unemployment' - should come right up.

0 coins

I was hesitant to take a part-time job at first because I thought it would mess up my benefits, but it's actually worked out really well. Still getting some unemployment money plus the part-time wages. Financial situation is much better now.

0 coins

That's encouraging to hear. I've been on the fence about a part-time opportunity.

0 coins

Go for it! Just make sure you report everything correctly and you should be fine.

0 coins

Another thing - if you get hired for full-time work, you need to report that immediately and stop filing weekly claims. Don't try to collect benefits while working full-time, even for a few days.

0 coins

What if the full-time job doesn't work out in the first week or two?

0 coins

You can reopen your claim if the job ends, but you need to follow the proper procedures. Don't keep an active claim while working full-time.

0 coins

Love seeing posts like this where people are trying to do the right thing. Working part-time while on unemployment is totally legitimate and actually encouraged by the system. Just be honest and accurate with your reporting.

0 coins

Agree! Better to ask questions and do it right than guess and mess up your claim.

0 coins

One last tip - keep your work schedule flexible if possible. If you get called for a job interview, you want to be able to go. Most part-time employers understand when you're actively job searching.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the advice! I feel much more confident about taking the part-time job now.

0 coins

Good luck with the new job! You're doing everything right by asking questions first.
