Can I get an extension on ESD unemployment benefits after regular benefits end?
Just got the notification that I only have 2 more weeks of unemployment benefits left, and I'm freaking out because I still haven't found a job despite applying to literally everything. I've used up almost all of my 26 weeks and I'm wondering if ESD offers any extensions after regular unemployment ends? I know during COVID they had all those extension programs, but do they have ANYTHING now? My rent is $1850 and I'm already behind on utilities. My industry (construction management) seems to be in a weird slump right now in Washington state. Has anyone successfully gotten an extension recently? Or am I just completely out of options once my benefits run out?

Unfortunately, there are currently no automatic extensions available through ESD once you exhaust your regular UI benefits. The pandemic-era extensions like PEUC and EB are no longer in effect. Regular UI in Washington is capped at 26 weeks, and once that's done, it's done unless there's a federal emergency program (which there isn't right now). You might want to look into: 1. WorkSource intensive services - they can help with targeted job search 2. DSHS for emergency assistance programs 3. Consider filing in another state if you worked there in your base year Really sorry you're in this position. The 26-week limit is frustrating when the job market is tough.

•Ugh this is what I was afraid of. Thanks for being straight with me though. Does anyone know if there's a way to get through to someone at ESD to discuss options? I've been trying to call for days but keep getting the "high call volume" message and disconnected.

have u tried 2-1-1? they mite be able 2 connect u w/ rent assistance or other help when ur benefits end. i was in same boat last yr, ended up getting temp work thru an agency while still looking 4 something permanent.

•That's a good idea, I'll try 211. Did temp work affect your unemployment at all when you were doing it? I'm worried about taking something temporary and messing up what little benefits I have left.

I went through this last month - no extensions available right now. But definitely call ESD directly to check if you qualify for any other programs. I spent 3 days trying to get through before I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an ESD agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The agent told me to apply for the Training Benefits program if I was interested in going back to school - it can extend your benefits while you train for a new career. Worth asking about if you can't find work in your field.

•TRAINING BENEFITS PROGRAM IS A JOKE!!! I applied for it and they denied me saying my chosen field "wasn't in demand" even though there were literally hundreds of job postings!!! The whole system is designed to get you off benefits as fast as possible, they don't actually care if you find sustainable employment or not!!!

When I exhausted my benefits in January, I was told that I would need to work enough qualifying hours to establish a new benefit year before I could receive unemployment again. The requirement was 680 hours of work in a 12-month period. My WorkSource advisor also mentioned checking eligibility for Trade Adjustment Assistance if your job loss was related to foreign trade, though that's pretty specific. Other than that, ESD doesn't currently have extension programs outside of Training Benefits if you qualify. One thing - make absolutely sure you're meeting all job search requirements (3 activities per week) and documenting them properly. I've seen people lose their last few weeks of benefits over documentation issues.

•Thanks for the heads up about the job search requirements. I've been doing way more than 3 activities a week but sometimes forget to log them all. Definitely won't let that happen now that I'm down to my last weeks.

My benefits ended last year and I was in the same boat. Ended up having to move in with my sister for a few months while I found work. Have you talked to your landlord? Some will work with you on a payment plan if you're upfront about the situation. Also check out churches in your area - some have emergency assistance funds.

•Great suggestion about churches. Also the Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul often have emergency assistance programs that can help with rent or utilities on a one-time basis. I've had to use those services before between jobs. No shame in getting help when you need it.

I used that Claimyr service I mentioned to call ESD again yesterday (on a different matter) and specifically asked about extensions. The agent confirmed there are NO federal or state extensions currently available once you exhaust regular UI benefits. However, she mentioned something I hadn't heard before - if you work part-time while on unemployment and don't use all your benefits within your benefit year, those remaining benefits can sometimes be available to you later. Might not help your immediate situation, but worth knowing.

•Thanks for checking! I just tried that Claimyr service and finally got through to ESD. They confirmed what everyone here said - no extensions right now. But they did connect me with someone at WorkSource who's going to help me with targeted job search assistance. At least that's something. Really appreciate everyone's advice.
