Unexpected $700 SS survivor benefit deposit at month end - still working with regular benefits

I'm confused about an unexpected deposit from Social Security. I've been receiving survivor benefits from my late husband (we were married for 32 years before he passed away about 18 months ago). I still work part-time at the library (about 20 hours weekly), and I know there are earnings limits that apply to my situation. My regular survivor benefit payment always comes at the beginning of the month through direct deposit, usually around the 3rd. Yesterday, at the end of the month, I noticed an additional $700 deposit from SSA that I wasn't expecting. There was no explanation - just the deposit. Has anyone experienced something similar? Could this be related to my earnings record or some kind of adjustment? I'm worried they made a mistake and I'll have to pay it back later.

This is likely a retroactive payment adjustment. SSA sometimes does this when they've recalculated your benefit amount or adjusted for previous months. Did you get any notice in the mail about a change to your monthly benefit amount? Check your my Social Security account online - there should be a message explaining the payment. If there's nothing there, you should definitely call SSA to confirm what it's for before spending it.

Thank you! I didn't receive any notices that I recall, but I'll check my my Social Security account right away. I'm always nervous about unexpected money because I've heard horror stories about SSA asking for repayment years later.

That's reassuring to hear! I'm definitely not touching it until I know exactly what it's for. Did you find out by calling them or did they eventually send you an explanation?

There are several possibilities for this unexpected payment: 1. Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) retroactive payment 2. Recalculation of benefits based on your deceased spouse's earnings record 3. Adjustment related to your work earnings limit 4. Processing of previously unpaid benefits The timing is unusual though - most scheduled payments follow a standard calendar. I'd recommend calling the SSA directly to get clarification. You don't want to spend it only to find out it was deposited in error and have to repay it later.

Thank you for listing those possibilities! That makes me feel a bit better knowing there could be legitimate reasons. I'll definitely call to confirm.

Have you checked your MySocialSecurity account? Sometimes they post notices there before you get the paper explanation. Just log in and check the message center. Also look under "Benefits & Payments" section - might show you what that payment was for.

I just tried to log in and realized my password has expired! Going to reset it now and check as soon as I can get in. Thanks for suggesting this!

THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME!!! Except mine was $840 and came about 3 months after my ex passed away. It turned out they had calculated something wrong with my initial survivor benefit. When I called (after waiting FOREVER) they said it was a one-time correction and not to expect it again. The rep told me they're seriously understaffed right now so notifications are super delayed. Don't be surprised if you get a letter explaining it weeks after the deposit happened.

You need to call them ASAP. I've tried for days to reach someone at my local office about a similar issue and it's impossible. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a live agent in under 10 minutes after I'd been trying for days. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU. Honestly it saved me so much frustration. The SSA rep told me unexpected payments can happen for various reasons - in my case, they had recalculated my benefit amount based on updated earnings information.

I've never heard of that service! Just looked at their website. I might try that because last time I called the SSA I was on hold for over an hour and then got disconnected. So frustrating.

Is it possible you reached Full Retirement Age (FRA) recently? Once you hit your FRA, the earnings limit no longer applies to your survivor benefits, which means you could get higher payments. They might have done a recalculation and sent you some back pay. Just a thought!

I'm actually 63, so I haven't reached my FRA yet. But that's good to know about the earnings limit going away at FRA - looking forward to that in a few years!

After you get this sorted out, I'd strongly recommend setting up direct deposit alerts with your bank if you haven't already. That way you'll get a text or email whenever you receive a deposit from SSA, which makes it easier to track these payments and notice anything unusual right away.

That's a great suggestion! I do have alerts set up for withdrawals over $100 but not for deposits. I'll add that today.

just wondering - did you file taxes recently? sometimes they adjust benefits after getting updated income info from the irs

Yes! I filed my taxes about a month ago. That's an interesting connection I hadn't thought about. Maybe that triggered something in their system.

Update us when you find out what it was for! It will help others who might experience the same thing in the future.

I finally got through to SSA after using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. The $700 was actually an adjustment related to my earnings from last year! Apparently I earned less than I estimated when I applied for survivor benefits, so they recalculated and sent me the difference as a one-time payment. Mystery solved! Thanks everyone for your help.
