Unexpected small Social Security direct deposits - what are these mystery payments?

I'm really confused about something that just happened. Yesterday I noticed two small direct deposits in our checking account from 'US Treasury 310, xx Soc Sec' that we weren't expecting. They're not our regular monthly benefits (those come on a different day and are much larger). One payment is for $127.54 and the other is $83.27. My husband and I are both on Social Security retirement - he started collecting last year and I've been receiving benefits since 2022. We haven't filed anything new with SSA recently, so I have no idea where these random payments came from! Has anyone experienced something similar? Should I be worried they'll want this money back if it's a mistake?

Those are probably COLA adjustments or back payments for something. Call SSA to find out for sure. Don't spend it till you know what it is!

Thanks! I tried calling this morning but was on hold forever. I'll try again tomorrow. Just seemed so random to get two different amounts.

This sounds like it could be one of several things: 1. Retroactive COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) payments if SSA determined you were owed additional amounts from previous adjustments 2. Underpayment corrections if they discovered your benefit calculation was off slightly 3. One-time adjustments based on earnings record updates 4. Medicare Part B premium adjustments (sometimes these come as separate payments) I'd recommend checking your MySocialSecurity account online - sometimes there are notices there explaining adjustments before the paper notices arrive in the mail. The fact that you received two different amounts suggests they might be adjustments for different periods or different types of corrections.

Thank you! I just logged into my account but don't see any notices yet. I'll keep checking though. The Medicare adjustment makes sense since we did get something about Part B in the mail a while back, but I didn't expect separate payments.

THE EXACT SAME THING just happened to my parents last month!!! Two random deposits - different amounts. Turns out it was because SSA had calculated their benefits wrong for a few months. Something about their earnings record being updated from 2021. They got a letter about it like 2 weeks AFTER the money showed up. Check your mail carefully the next few days!!

Oh that's good to know! I'll definitely watch for a letter. Was your parents' situation resolved okay? They didn't have to return the money?

Nope! It was legitimately owed to them. SSA had messed up some calculation. Dad was SO MAD that they didn't tell him BEFORE depositing though because he thought it was fraud at first!!

I've been helping seniors with Social Security issues for years, and these mystery deposits are almost always legitimate adjustments. The Social Security Administration occasionally reviews accounts and makes corrections when they find discrepancies. The separate payment amounts likely represent different adjustment periods or different types of corrections. For example, one might be a COLA adjustment while the other could be an earnings record correction. Like others suggested, check your MySocialSecurity account and watch for mail explaining the payments. Typically, when SSA makes errors in THEIR favor, they correct them automatically when discovered. If you're concerned, you can request an explanation by calling SSA directly, but be prepared for a long wait. The earlier in the morning you call, the better your chances of reaching someone.

I've been trying to reach SSA for THREE WEEKS about a payment issue! Their phone system is impossible - either "all circuits are busy" or I wait 2+ hours only to get disconnected. Any advice on actually getting through to a human being there??

That's reassuring! We'll just let the money sit in our account until we get an explanation. Good to hear from someone who's been through this.

This reminds me of when I started getting SS checks - I had all kinds of weird adjustments at first! My brother in law works for the government (not SSA) and he said their computer systems are ancient. Like from the 1980s! So sometimes they process things in weird batches. My dad used to say never look a gift horse in the mouth lol.

Ancient systems or not, you should ALWAYS verify unexpected money. The government doesn't just randomly send extra money without reason.

Update? Did you ever find out what the payments were for? I'm curious because I just checked my account and saw a small deposit too!

Yes! Finally got a letter yesterday. It was a combination of a Medicare Part B adjustment and a small COLA correction. The letter explained that they found some discrepancy when they were reviewing our file. So everything's fine - it was our money after all!
