Social Security tax withholding - need appointment or can I just drop off W-4V form?
I started collecting my retirement benefits about 6 months ago and just realized I'm going to owe a bunch at tax time next year. I want to have federal taxes withheld from my monthly Social Security payment now, which I know requires filling out form W-4V. My question is: Do I need to schedule an actual appointment at my local SSA office to submit this form? Or can I just walk in and drop it off at the front desk? Their phone system is impossible and I don't want to waste a trip if they're going to turn me away without an appointment. Has anyone done this recently? I tried mailing it in last month but haven't seen any change in my deposits so I'm getting anxious.

You don't need an appointment to drop off the W-4V form. I did this exact thing back in February. Just walk in during normal hours, take a number, and when called tell them you're just dropping off a completed form. I brought mine already filled out and they accepted it right away. The withholding started on my very next payment. Make sure you've selected the correct withholding percentage on the form (7%, 10%, 12%, or 22%). And keep a photocopy of the completed form for your records!

•Thank you! That's such a relief! Did they give you any kind of receipt or confirmation that they received it? I'm worried about it getting lost in the shuffle again.

i just mailed mine in and it worked fine, took about 3-4 weeks to start seeing the withholding. maybe your form got lost in the mail? or maybe u filled something out wrong? did u sign it?

•I definitely signed it and double-checked everything. I chose 10% withholding and mailed it to the address on the SSA website. It's been over 5 weeks now with no change to my deposit amount. That's why I thought maybe dropping it off in person might be better.

YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED AN APPOINTMENT!!!!! I tried to drop off my W-4V last year and they REFUSED to take it at the front desk!!! Said I needed an appointment which was booked 6 WEEKS out!!! The whole system is DESIGNED to prevent you from giving them your money!!! I ended up faxing it instead and it took TWO MONTHS to process!!!!!

•This really depends on your local office. Some offices are stricter than others about appointments. If you're worried, you could call your local office directly (not the main SSA number) and ask about their specific policy for dropping off forms.

When I needed to submit my W-4V last year, I was struggling with the same issue. I called for days and couldn't get through to anyone at SSA. I finally discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to an actual SSA agent in about 15 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. They confirmed I could just drop off the form at my local office without an appointment. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU Saved me so much frustration! The agent I spoke with also explained why my mailed form might not have been processed - sometimes they need additional information that wasn't clearly indicated on the form.

•I've never heard of this service before. I'll check out the video, thanks! Anything to avoid those endless phone menus and disconnects would be worth it at this point.

I just did this last month! No appointment needed at my office (Tampa). But bring ID and your Social Security card if you have it. They'll still make you take a number and wait, but it was pretty quick once my number was called. Good luck!

This is actually a common issue. The W-4V form (Voluntary Withholding Request) can be submitted multiple ways: 1. Mail to your local SSA office (can take 4-6 weeks to process) 2. Drop off in person (no appointment technically required, but policies vary by office) 3. Fax to your local office with a cover sheet including your SSN Since you already tried mailing it in without success, dropping it off in person is your best bet. Bring your ID and be prepared to wait. Make sure you're using the current version of the W-4V form (Rev. January 2023). If the withholding doesn't start within 4 weeks of in-person submission, you should contact SSA directly. Also remember this only affects federal taxes - for state taxes, you'll need to make estimated quarterly payments if your state taxes Social Security benefits.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I didn't even think about state taxes. Fortunately, my state doesn't tax Social Security, but that's really helpful info. I'll double-check which version of the W-4V I'm using too.

Same thing happened to me last year! Mailed it twice and nothing happened. When I finally went in person they told me they never received either form. So frustrating!

Thanks everyone for the advice! I went to my local office this morning with my filled-out W-4V form and ID. Took a number, waited about 30 minutes, and they accepted it no problem! The staff person said I should see the withholding start on my payment next month. She also gave me a receipt showing they received the form, which made me feel much better. For anyone else wondering, at least at my office (Tucson), no appointment was needed just to drop off a form.

•Great! Glad it worked out for you. That receipt will be important if there are any issues later on. Smart move going in person!
