Can I request PA UC backdate for 5 weeks before I filed my initial claim?
Hey all, I'm super stressed about this situation and could use some advice. I lost my job about 10 weeks ago, but I didn't file for unemployment right away because I wasn't sure if I qualified (my previous employer hinted I might not be eligible). After doing more research, I finally submitted my PA UC application 5 weeks ago, but my claim is still showing as 'under review' in the system. I have two questions I'm really confused about: 1. Can I request backpay for those first 5 weeks before I actually filed my claim? I definitely could have used that money. 2. Do I need to wait until my current claim is approved before requesting the backdating, or should I do it now? If backdating is possible, is there a specific email address I need to use for the request? The PA UC website is so confusing and I can't find clear information anywhere. Thanks for any help!

•Thank you! Do you remember how long your claim was under review before it got approved? I'm getting really anxious about mine.

Yes, you can request backdating for your PA UC claim, but you need to have good cause for not filing immediately. Being unsure about eligibility can qualify as good cause. The official term is "backdating" not "backpay" (though everyone understands what you mean). You don't need to wait until your current claim is approved - you can submit the backdate request now. There's no specific email, but you can: 1. Call the UC service center at 1-888-313-7284 2. Use the messaging system in your dashboard (select "Backdating Request" as the topic) 3. Upload a backdating request form through your dashboard Make sure to clearly explain why you didn't file immediately. They'll review your reason and determine if it meets their criteria for good cause.

•This is really helpful information, thank you! I'll try calling them tomorrow morning and if I can't get through, I'll use the messaging system. Would it help if I include documentation about why I thought I might not qualify?

I've helped several people with backdating their claims in PA. Here's what you need to know: - PA will backdate claims up to 52 weeks for good cause - Being misinformed about eligibility is considered good cause - Your benefit year begins with the Sunday of the week you initially file - Each week you're requesting to backdate needs to meet eligibility requirements Important: Start the backdate request process ASAP, even while your current claim is under review. The two processes can happen simultaneously. When you call, specifically ask for a "backdate request form" and be very clear about your reason for delayed filing. Also, while your claim is "under review," make sure you're still filing your weekly certifications for current weeks. Many people miss this step and lose benefits.

OMG the PA UC phone system is THE WORST!!! I spent THREE WEEKS trying to get through to someone about my backdating request. Busy signals, disconnects, or waiting on hold for HOURS only to get hung up on! This system is DESIGNED to make people give up!!! When I finally got through, they told me my backdate request was "pending review" and could take another 2-3 weeks! Meanwhile bills are piling up and they act like we can just wait forever. The whole thing is BROKEN.

•I had the exact same experience trying to reach PA UC about my backdating request. Spent days calling - always busy or disconnected. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZWG3KiHrg2 The agent backdated my claim right away during the call. Saved me weeks of frustration and I didn't have to keep taking time off work to make calls that went nowhere. Just sharing because I know how insanely difficult it is to get through to them about backdating requests.

•This isn't accurate. PA UC regulations specifically allow for backdating claims when there's good cause for the delay. Being unsure about eligibility is a recognized good cause reason. The key is documenting the reason properly on the backdate request form and following up consistently.

Update: I finally was able to get through to someone at PA UC this morning after trying for days! The representative confirmed I can submit a backdating request even while my claim is still under review. I submitted it through the portal messaging system and selected "Backdating Request" as the topic. She said my original claim should be decided within the next week (finally!) and the backdating request will take an additional 1-2 weeks to process. I have to keep filing my weekly certifications in the meantime. Thanks everyone for the advice - will update when I hear back about both requests!

Great news! One more tip - make sure to follow up on your backdating request in 10 business days if you don't hear anything. Sometimes these requests can fall through the cracks if they're busy. Also, be sure you can document your job loss date (last pay stub, termination letter, etc.) as they'll want verification to approve backdating. Good luck!

•Thank you so much for this advice! I do have my termination letter with the date, plus my final pay stub, so I'll make sure those are ready if they ask for them. And I'll definitely follow up if I don't hear anything in 10 business days.

Just wanted to add that I went through a similar situation last year. I was able to get my PA UC claim backdated for 7 weeks after I initially delayed filing because I thought I might not qualify (my employer told me the same thing). The key things that helped me: - I kept detailed notes of when I lost my job and why I didn't file immediately - I submitted the backdating request through the messaging system like others mentioned - I was persistent but polite when following up It took about 3 weeks total to get approved for backdating once I submitted the request. Don't let anyone tell you it's impossible - PA does approve these requests when you have good cause. Your situation sounds very similar to mine and I got approved, so stay hopeful! Make sure you keep filing those weekly certifications even while everything is under review. That was crucial for me.

•This is really encouraging to hear! Your situation does sound almost identical to mine - my employer basically told me the same thing about not qualifying. I'm definitely going to keep detailed notes about my timeline and reasons like you suggested. It's reassuring to know that PA does actually approve these requests when there's good cause. Thanks for sharing your experience and the reminder about continuing to file weekly certifications - I'll make sure I don't miss any of those while waiting for decisions on both my main claim and the backdating request.

I'm in almost the exact same situation right now! Lost my job 8 weeks ago but didn't file until 3 weeks ago because I was convinced I wouldn't qualify (my manager made some comments that made me think I was fired for cause). My claim has been under review this whole time too and it's so stressful. Reading through all these responses is giving me hope that I can get those first 5 weeks backdated. I'm definitely going to try the messaging system approach since calling seems like such a nightmare. Quick question for anyone who's been through this - do they ask for any specific documentation when you submit the backdating request, or do you just explain your situation in the message? I want to make sure I include everything they need the first time. Thanks for posting this question - it's exactly what I needed to see today!

•Hey Max! I'm actually new here but dealing with something really similar. From what I've been reading in this thread, it sounds like when you submit the backdating request through the messaging system, you should include a clear explanation of why you didn't file immediately (like being told by your manager you might not qualify). Several people mentioned having documentation ready like termination letters or final pay stubs that show your actual job loss date, but it seems like they don't always ask for it upfront - they might request it later if needed. I'd probably include the basic details in your initial message and mention that you have documentation available if they need it. The messaging system approach definitely seems way better than trying to call based on everyone's horror stories about the phone lines! Good luck with your request - sounds like we're both in the same boat waiting for these decisions.

I'm new to this community but going through a similar situation right now. Lost my job 6 weeks ago and just filed my claim last week after spending way too long thinking I wouldn't qualify (got laid off during a "restructuring" but wasn't sure if that counted). Reading through everyone's experiences here is really helpful - especially learning that you can submit a backdating request while your main claim is still under review. I had no idea that was possible! I was planning to wait until my claim got approved first. One thing I'm curious about - for those who successfully got backdated, did PA UC ask you to prove that you were actively looking for work during those weeks before you filed? Or do they just focus on whether you had good cause for not filing immediately? I've been job searching the whole time but wasn't keeping detailed records since I hadn't filed yet. Thanks for creating this thread - it's exactly the kind of real-world advice that's impossible to find on the official PA UC website!

•Hey Grace! Welcome to the community - I'm pretty new here too but have been following this thread closely since I'm in a similar boat. From what I've seen others mention, the backdating approval seems to focus mainly on whether you had good cause for not filing immediately rather than requiring detailed job search records for those pre-filing weeks. That said, it probably wouldn't hurt to start documenting your job search activities now if you can remember any specifics (like companies you applied to, dates, etc.) just in case they do ask. But the consensus seems to be that "good cause" for delayed filing is the main hurdle - and being unsure about eligibility due to a restructuring layoff sounds like it would definitely qualify. I'd definitely recommend submitting that backdating request sooner rather than later like others have suggested. The messaging system approach through your dashboard seems to be the way to go based on everyone's experiences with the phone system being impossible to get through to!

I'm new to this community but wanted to share my recent experience with PA UC backdating since it might help others in similar situations. I was able to get my claim backdated for 4 weeks after initially delaying my filing due to confusion about eligibility. A few tips that worked for me: 1. **Use the messaging system first** - I tried calling for days with no luck, but the messaging system got me a response within 48 hours. Select "Backdating Request" as your topic and be very specific about your timeline and reasons. 2. **Document everything** - Keep notes of your job loss date, when you filed, and exactly why you delayed. I wrote out a clear timeline in my backdating request message. 3. **Be patient but persistent** - My backdating took about 2.5 weeks to get approved after I submitted the request. I followed up once after 10 business days like others suggested. 4. **Continue weekly certifications** - This is crucial! Even while both my main claim and backdating request were under review, I kept filing weekly. The whole process was stressful but definitely doable. Don't let anyone tell you PA doesn't approve these requests - they do when you have legitimate good cause. Being unsure about eligibility absolutely counts as good cause in their system. Good luck to everyone going through this process!

•This is incredibly helpful information, Isaac! I'm new to this community and currently dealing with a similar backdating situation. Your step-by-step approach is exactly what I needed to see. I've been hesitant to submit my backdating request because I wasn't sure about the process, but your experience with the messaging system getting a response in 48 hours is really encouraging compared to all the horror stories about calling. The tip about documenting everything in a clear timeline format is great - I'm going to write mine out before submitting. And thanks for confirming that continuing weekly certifications is crucial even during the review process. I was wondering about that but wasn't sure. It's really reassuring to hear from someone who actually got approved recently. How detailed did you get in your initial backdating request message about your reasons for delaying?

•@Cameron Black I m'new here too but wanted to jump in since I just went through this process last month. When I wrote my backdating request, I was pretty detailed about my timeline and reasons. I included: - Exact date I lost my job - Exact date I filed my claim - Specific reason I delayed my (HR department told me I might not be eligible because of how my position was eliminated -) Brief mention that I had been job searching during the delay I kept it to about 3-4 paragraphs total - detailed enough to show I had legitimate good cause, but not so long that they d'skip reading it. The key seems to be being very clear about WHY you delayed filing rather than just when. Isaac s'advice about the messaging system is spot on - I got a response asking for my termination letter within 2 days, then approval about a week after I uploaded it. So much better than trying to call! Good luck with your request!

I'm new to this community but wanted to add my recent experience with PA UC backdating since I see so many people going through similar situations. I lost my job 9 weeks ago but didn't file until 4 weeks ago because my former supervisor told me I was being let go "for performance issues" and wouldn't qualify for benefits. After researching more, I realized this wasn't accurate and filed my claim. Like many others here, I was intimidated by the phone system horror stories, so I went straight to the messaging system approach. I submitted my backdating request about 2 weeks ago through the dashboard (selected "Backdating Request" topic) and included a detailed timeline of events plus my specific reason for delaying. They responded within 3 business days asking for my termination paperwork, which I uploaded immediately. Just got approved yesterday for backdating 5 weeks! The whole process took exactly 2 weeks from initial request to approval. A couple things that might have helped my case: - I kept my request message concise but included specific dates and clear explanation - I had all my documentation ready (termination letter, final pay stub) - I've been consistently filing weekly certifications throughout the entire process For anyone on the fence about requesting backdating - definitely worth trying if you have good cause. The messaging system really does work much better than calling. Stay persistent but patient!

•Congratulations on getting approved, Elin! Your timeline gives me a lot of hope since I'm in a very similar situation. I'm also new here and just submitted my backdating request through the messaging system yesterday after reading through everyone's experiences in this thread. Like you, I was told by my employer that I probably wouldn't qualify (they made it sound like I was being terminated for cause), but after doing research I realized I should have been eligible all along. I lost my job 7 weeks ago and only filed 2 weeks ago. Your point about keeping the request message concise but detailed is really helpful - I tried to strike that same balance in mine. It's encouraging that they responded so quickly asking for documentation and then approved you within 2 weeks total. I've been keeping up with my weekly certifications too, so hopefully I'll have a similar outcome. Thanks for sharing your success story - it's exactly what I needed to hear while I'm waiting for a response on my request!

I'm new to this community but wanted to jump in since I'm currently dealing with a very similar backdating situation. I lost my job 6 weeks ago but didn't file my PA UC claim until 2 weeks ago because my HR department told me during my exit interview that I "might want to think carefully about whether I really qualified" for benefits due to some attendance issues I'd had. This made me second-guess myself for weeks until I finally did more research and realized I should have filed immediately regardless. My claim is still under review, but after reading through all these incredibly helpful responses, I'm going to submit my backdating request through the messaging system today. It's so reassuring to see that PA UC does actually approve these requests when you have good cause - and being told you might not qualify definitely seems to count based on everyone's experiences. •Welcome to the community, Camila! I'm also new here but have been closely following this thread since I'm in a similar situation. Based on all the great advice shared here, I'd definitely recommend submitting your backdating request now rather than waiting for your main claim to be approved - several people confirmed you can do both simultaneously. As for specific wording, from what I've read it seems like being clear and concise about your timeline is key. Include the exact date you lost your job, when you filed your claim, and specifically mention that your supervisor led you to believe you were terminated for cause and wouldn't qualify. That kind of misinformation from employers seems to be exactly what PA considers "good cause" for delayed filing. The messaging system really does seem to be the way to go - so many people have had success with it compared to the phone system horror stories. Make sure to select "Backdating Request" as your topic and mention you have documentation available if they need it. Your situation sounds very similar to others who got approved, so stay hopeful! I'm new to this community but currently going through the exact same situation! Lost my job 9 weeks ago but only filed my PA UC claim 3 weeks ago because my former manager told me during my termination meeting that I was being let go for "not meeting expectations" and strongly implied I wouldn't qualify for benefits. After weeks of struggling financially and doing my own research, I realized I should have filed immediately regardless of what she said. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly eye-opening - I had no idea you could request backdating while your main claim is still under review! Make sure to include a clear timeline with specific dates in your request - when you lost your job, when your manager made those comments, and when you finally filed. Having that documentation ready like your termination letter will help speed things up if they request it. And definitely keep filing those weekly certifications while everything is under review! •Welcome to the community, Connor! I'm also new here but have been closely following this entire thread since I'm in a very similar backdating situation. It's amazing how many of us are dealing with the exact same issue - employers giving misleading information that causes us to delay filing when we should have been eligible all along. Your timeline of losing your job 8 weeks ago but only filing 2 weeks ago sounds very similar to several others who have successfully gotten backdated here. The messaging system approach definitely seems to be the most effective method based on everyone's experiences - so much better than trying to navigate the phone system nightmare. When you submit your backdating request, make sure to include specific details about what your employer said to discourage you from filing and create a clear timeline with exact dates. From what I've learned reading through all these success stories, being told you were terminated for cause when you actually weren't is exactly the kind of "good cause" that PA UC recognizes for delayed filing. Good luck with your submission this week! This thread really has been invaluable for understanding the process and knowing that backdating is actually possible when you have legitimate reasons.
