Need phone number to reach NY unemployment live agent about backpay issue
Been trying for TWO WEEKS to get my ny unemployment backpay issue resolved!! The online system is useless for this. Does anyone have a direct number I can use to speak to an actual human being at unemployment? I've tried the main number like 50 times but get stuck in the automated system. My claim shows 4 weeks of payments ($1,876) that are approved but haven't been released to me yet and I'm getting desperate. Bills piling up and landlord breathing down my neck. HELP!!

The main number (888-209-8124) is still your best option, but you have to call exactly at 8:00 AM when they open. If you call even 5 minutes later, you'll be stuck in the queue all day. Also, press 9 for representative instead of going through the menu options. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

•Thanks but thats what I've been doing! Called at 8:00 AM sharp three days in a row and still getting nowhere. The system just says 'high call volume' and hangs up on me!!

•What callback option?? I didn't even get that far in the menu! The system just disconnects me before I can request anything.

I was in your exact situation last month with 6 weeks of backpay stuck in limbo. After wasting days trying to call, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 20 minutes. They basically call for you and connect you when they reach a human. Check out their demo video if you're curious how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - seriously saved my sanity and got my backpay released within 48 hours after speaking with someone.

•Never heard of this before. Is it legit? Did they actually help with your backpay issue specifically?

•Yes, 100% legit. I was skeptical too but desperate. The agent I spoke with was able to see that my backpay was held up for an "identity verification review" that somehow never got completed. She manually released the payments while I was on the phone. Without talking to a human, I would've been waiting forever.

Former NYSDOL employee here. The backpay issue you're describing is extremely common in 2025 due to the new automated review system they implemented. When payments show as "approved" but not released, it's typically one of three things: 1. Identity verification flag (most common) 2. Employer protest requiring manual review 3. System glitch in the payment processing module Unfortunately, all three require speaking with a Tier 2 agent who can override the hold. And yes, phone lines are overwhelmed due to budget cuts. If you absolutely cannot get through by phone, you can try emailing backpay2025@labor.ny.gov with your FULL claim ID in the subject line. Response time is 7-10 business days though.

•Thank you SO MUCH for this detailed info! I'll try the email too, but honestly can't wait 7-10 days. My landlord is already threatening eviction. Do you know if Claimyr actually works or is that just another scam?

•I can't officially endorse any third-party service, but I will say many claimants reported success with call connection services during my time at NYSDOL. The department is aware these services exist and doesn't prohibit their use. Whatever gets you to an agent is worth trying when you're in a desperate situation with backpay stuck in the system.

the whole system is RIGGED!!! they DELIBERATELY make it imposible to talk to anyone so they dont have to pay us OUR MONEY!!! ive had $2,340 stuck in limbo since JANUARY and still nothing!!! this is how they save money, by making it so hard to get help that people give up!!!!

•Calm down with the conspiracy theories. The system is definitely broken but it's not some evil plot. It's just understaffed and poorly designed. My cousin works at NYSDOL (not in claims) and says they're as frustrated as we are with the phone systems.

I had a similar backpay issue in February. What worked for me was contacting my state assembly member's office. They have direct lines to NYSDOL liaisons and can often get things resolved within a few days. Look up your assembly district and send them an email explaining your situation with your claim ID number.

•That's a great idea! I didn't even think about contacting my assembly member. I'll do that today. But I'm still going to try calling again tomorrow morning too. So stressed about this.

•At this point I'd pay whatever to just get my money. I need my backpay for rent!

Update on my earlier advice: I just learned NYSDOL changed their phone system last month. Now the best time to call is actually between 7:30-7:45 AM (yes, before they officially open). The queue starts accepting callers earlier than advertised. Also, when prompted for your PIN, enter it VERY slowly with pauses between each number. This sometimes bypasses the standard menu tree and gets you to an agent faster. Good luck!

UPDATE: I finally got through to a live agent this morning!!! Used Claimyr and had a call back with an agent in about 30 mins. The rep said my backpay was stuck because of a "wage verification hold" that needed manual override. She processed all 4 weeks while I was on the phone and said the money should be in my account within 2-3 business days. SUCH A RELIEF!!! Thank you everyone for your suggestions and help!!

•That's awesome! Glad it worked out for you. Nothing beats actually talking to a human who can fix things.

•Perfect example of why manual review is so important. The system sometimes applies these wage verification holds incorrectly, especially if you had multiple employers in your base period. Always worth speaking to an agent directly for backpay issues.
