Can I update my NY unemployment claim to add a forgotten employer from last year?
I filed for ny unemployment back in August 2022 and completely forgot to add one of my jobs I worked at from March to June 2022. It wasnt a big job, I only made about $3,400 there but I'm worried I messed up by not including it. Is it too late to update my claim now? It's been over a year since I filed. Could I get in trouble for this? Will they make me pay back benefits if I add it now? I've been stressing about this for weeks and don't know what to do.

You need to call them asap. The system probably won't let you update it online after this long. The sooner you fix it the better - they might view it as fraud if they find out later and you didn't try to correct it.

•Call right when they open at 8am. That's when I got through after weeks of trying. Be prepared to wait at least an hour though.

After being in the EXACT same situation (forgot to add a 4-month job), I finally got through to a real person using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They basically hold your place in line and call you when a rep picks up. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast and they helped me update my work history without penalties. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent after weeks of trying. Check out this video too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Not a scam at all! I was desperate after trying for 3 weeks to get someone on the phone. They just call and wait on hold for you, then connect you when someone answers. Saved me like 6 hours of hold music 😂

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? the unemployment system is broken enough without more false promises

•It worked for me! My claim was a mess and I needed to talk to someone ASAP. After using claimyr I got a call back in about 2 hours with an actual agent on the line. Worth every penny after all the stress.

•I tried it too after seeing it here. Got through to a rep who fixed my missing employer issue. Better than wasting days trying to call yourself.

YES you can update it, but you NEED to talk to a rep. They can add the missing employer retroactively. DON'T wait for them to discover it in a wage audit or youll be in bigger trouble. Missing wages is technically misrepresentation, but if you self-report the mistake they're usualy understanding.

I had a simlar issue where I forgot to report a job i worked at for only 2 months. I didn't realize until almost a year later! I ended up getting a letter saying I had unreported wages and they were going to audit my claim. Took forever to sort out and I had to pay back some benefits + a small penalty. Definitely call and fix it before they find it themselves.

•They made me repay about $1200 in benefits they said I wasn't eligible for plus a 15% penalty. Plus it was a huge headache that took months to resolve. Just be proactive and you'll avoid all that.

Look, heres the deal with NY unemployment - they WILL eventually find any unreported wages through quarterly employer tax filings. The system automatically cross-checks. Better to come clean now than have them come after you later with penalties and interest. This happens ALL the time, your best bet is to call and explain it was an honest mistake.

•💯 this is the answer. They have all your wage data already, theyre just waiting to match it up and find discrepancies

•this is why the unemployment system is so messed up. they know if someone made a mistake but make you jump through hoops to fix it instead of just automatically correcting it 🤦♀️

I work at an accounting firm and deal with this stuff regularly for clients. Here's what you need to know: First, don't panic. Mistakes happen and NYSDOL recognizes this. The key is addressing it proactively. What you need to do: - Call the claims center directly (good luck getting through with regular calling) - Explain it was an inadvertent omission - Have the employer info ready (EIN, address, dates worked, wages earned) - They'll recalculate your benefit rate - You may need to repay some benefits if the additional wages would have changed your weekly amount Important: If you're struggling to get through on the phone, I've had multiple clients successfully use claimyr.com to connect with representatives. It's a service that waits on hold for you and connects you with an agent when they're available. Much better than spending days trying to call. The sooner you address this, the less likely you'll face penalties. NYSDOL conducts regular wage verifications, so they'll eventually discover the missing employer anyway. Being proactive shows good faith.

•Thats insane for just forgetting to list a job! The system is designed to punish people i swear

The real question is how much did you make at that job compared to your benefit amount? If you made significantly more at the forgotten job, you might have been overpaid benefits and will need to repay. If it was a small amount that wouldn't have changed your benefit calculation, you might be fine with just updating your record.

•I made about $3,400 over 3 months at that job. My weekly benefit was $375 if that helps?

Max Reyes
•That might actually not change your benefit amount much depending on your other wages. But you still need to report it. The system calculates your benefit based on your highest-earning quarter, so if this wasn't your highest quarter you might be ok.

I used to work for ny unemployment (quit last year thank god). People forget jobs all the time. Call the office, explain the situation, and they'll help you update it. Just be honest - say you genuinely forgot. As long as you're coming forward voluntarily before they catch it, they're usually pretty understanding.

•bro can you share any insider tips for getting through the phone system? its literally impossible

•not really, the phone system is as terrible for employees as it is for claimants. we were constantly understaffed. your best bet is calling right at 8am on a tuesday or wednesday (mondays are swamped with weekend backlog

anyone saying its "too late" is wrong. you can amend claims even years later. the real issue is getting someone on the phone who knows what they're doing. took me 49 calls over 3 days to reach a human last time i had a problem.

This is why the NY unemployment system needs a complete overhaul. How are regular people supposed to navigate this bureaucratic nightmare? Even honest mistakes become huge problems because the system is designed to be confusing and punitive. The whole thing needs to be simplified.

•facts. its like they want people to make mistakes so they can collect penalties 🙄

•The worst part is the impossible phone system. It's 2023, why can't they invest in a callback system that actually works?
