Can I get NY unemployment with barely any work history this year?
I'm trying to figure out if its possible to apply for unemployment in New York if I've barely worked at all. Lost my old job about 21 months ago, and just recently got hired somewhere new in April. Only managed to work for 3 days before they let me go. At this point I'm wondering if I should even bother applying for unemployment or just go straight for SSI since I have some medical restrictions (can't lift more than 40 pounds due to back problems). Anyone know if theres any point trying for regular unemployment when I've got almost no work history in the last year and a half?

Unfortunatelly, you need to have worked in your base period to qualify. Base period is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters. You don't have enough work history based on what you said. You might want to check out SSI or SSDI depending on your situation an medical history.

•Damn, thats what I was afraid of. Thanks for the info, gonna look into SSI then.

•Base periods can be confusing. Sometimes they also have an 'alternate base period' that uses more recent work history. Might be worth asking about that specifically.

•True about the alternate base period, but with only 3 days of work this year, I don't think that would be enough anyway. You usually need to earn at least $2,600+ in a quarter.

After struggling with ny unemployment for months and getting nowhere, I found this service that actually calls them for you and connects you with a live agent. Used claimyr.com and got through in under an hour when I'd been trying for weeks! Talking to a human finally got all my questions answered. They can tell you exactly what you qualify for and help with your specific situation. Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•This sounds like an ad. Does it actually work for real people?

•I was skeptical too but it literally saved me weeks of frustration. My claim had been pending for 2 months, got it resolved in one call after they connected me. Best money I've spent considering how much I was owed in benefits.

•I've heard about services like this but wasn't sure they're worth it. How long did you actually wait?

•The system called me back in like 45 min when they had an agent on the line. Compare that to the HOURS I spent on hold before (when I could even get through). Saved my sanity, no joke.

•sounds like more unemployment system BS to me... another 'miracle fix' that probably doesn't work 🙄

•Not a miracle fix - the unemployment system is still broken. This just helps you navigate it. They literally just get you through to a human being who can actually help instead of an endless hold line or website error messages.

You need to have worked and earned enough wages during your base period to qualify for unemployment in NY. Since you only worked 3 days this year and nothing for like a year and a half before that, you probably won't qualify for regular UI. The minimum earnings requirement is pretty substantial - like $2,700 in your highest quarter and at least $4,200 total in your base period.

I was in a somewhat similar situation last year. Had very minimal work hours and tried applying. Got denied. The system is super frustrating because you can go through the whole application process only to find out at the end you don't qualify. Total waste of time. 😡

•Same happened to me! They should tell u up front if ur not eligable instead of making people wait weeks just to get denied. The whole system is rigged against ppl who need it most.

•EXACTLY! Like tell me in the first 5 minutes not after 3 weeks of waiting and followups.

•This is what I'm worried about. Don't want to wait forever just to get denied.

For SSI, you'll need to prove that you have a disability that prevents you from doing substantial work. Back problems can qualify but you'll need medical documentation and it's a pretty intensive application process. If you go that route, get ready for a lot of paperwork and possibly hiring a disability lawyer if you get denied initially (which happens to most people on their first try).

•My doctor has been documenting my back issues for years, so hopefully that helps. Thanks for the heads up about possibly needing a lawyer.

Here's what you need to know about NY unemployment eligibility: - You must have worked and earned enough wages during your base period (usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters) - You need to have earned at least $2,700 in one quarter - You need total earnings of at least 1.5 times your highest quarter earnings across the entire base period - You must be able and available for work - You must be unemployed through no fault of your own With only 3 days of work this year and no work for many months before that, you almost certainly won't qualify for regular UI benefits. However, you might qualify for other assistance programs. If you have documented medical conditions that limit your ability to work, SSI or SSDI might be options. SSI is needs-based (income/resource limits apply) while SSDI requires work credits earned over your lifetime. You might also want to look into: - SNAP benefits (food assistance) - Medicaid for healthcare - HEAP for energy assistance - Local job training programs that can accommodate your physical limitations I'd recommend contacting your local Department of Social Services to see what you might qualify for. You can also try connecting with a live agent at unemployment through claimyr.com if you want a definitive answer about your UI eligibility based on your specific work history.

•This is super helpful, thank you! Sounds like UI is definitely a no-go for me. I'll look into the other programs you mentioned.

•Just want to add that the SSI/SSDI application process takes FOREVER. Like literally months or even years if you have to appeal. Start that process ASAP if you're going that route.

•Great point. The backlog for disability applications is significant. Documentation is key - make sure every doctor visit and limitation is well-documented.

•Lol good luck getting through to a human being. I tried calling NY unemployment for 3 weeks straight and never got past the hold music. 💀

•Try claimyr.com - they call and wait on hold for you then connect you when they get a human. Only way I ever got through.

You don't qualify for regular unemployment with only 3 days of work this year and no work history before that. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but theres specific earning requirements. You need to have earned at least a certain amount in your base period and with 3 days of work you definitely won't meet that threshold.

The criteria to qualify for NY unemployment is pretty clear cut – you need to have worked and earned a minimum amount during your base period. With only 3 days of work this year after a long gap, you're unfortunately not going to qualify. It's not worth the time and effort to apply because you'll just get denied.

For SSI, you need to prove you have a disability that affects your ability to work. Back problems can qualify, but you'll need lots of medical documentation. The application process is long and most people get denied the first time, so be prepared for that. Might be worth talking to a disability lawyer before you even apply.

NY labor department has a unemployment eligibility calculator on their website that might help you figure out if you qualify. But honestly with so little work history it's pretty unlikely.

Unemployment insurance is exactly that - INSURANCE. You have to pay into the system (through working) to get benefits out. If you haven't worked much, you haven't paid much into the system, so you don't get benefits. That's why it's not going to work for your situation with only 3 days of work.

•That's not entirely accurate. Employers pay unemployment insurance taxes, not employees directly. But the principle is similar - benefits are based on your work history and earnings.

•Oh you're right, my bad. But the point stands - no work history = no benefits. That's just how the system is designed.

Lifehack: if you REALLY need to talk to someone at ny unemployment to get a definitive answer on this, use claimyr.com - they wait on hold for you and connect you when there's an actual human on the line. Saved me hours of frustration when I was dealing with my claim issues.

TBH you're better off focusing on finding a job that doesn't require heavy lifting than wasting time on unemployment applications you won't qualify for. There's lots of WFH jobs these days that don't require any physical labor. That's your best bet with back problems.
