9 weeks since NY unemployment application and still 'in process' - no money yet!
It's been 9 weeks since I applied for NY unemployment and 8 weeks of claiming benefits, but STILL no response from DOL! They keep saying 'give it 3 to 6 weeks' but I'm WAY past that timeframe now. This is absolutely ridiculous!! I don't have people around to help me financially so I desperately need the money that I WORKED FOR. I only had 1 job in 2025 so why on earth is my claim still showing as 'in process'?? Every time I log in, it's the same status with zero explanation. Am I the only person going through this nightmare? My rent is already late and I'm running out of options. Has anyone else waited this long and actually gotten their benefits?

ur definitely not alone! i waited 11 weeks last month before mine finally got approved. no explanation for the delay either, just suddenly started getting deposits. the system is completely broken imo

•11 WEEKS?? Omg that's even worse than me! Did you do anything special to finally get it approved or did it just randomly start working? I'm so stressed I can barely sleep.

Claims that take longer than 6 weeks are usually flagged for additional review. There could be several reasons: 1. Identity verification issues 2. Employment history discrepancies 3. Wage verification problems 4. High claim volume (though this is less common in 2025) You should call and speak directly with an agent. They can see exactly what's delaying your claim and often resolve it immediately during the call. When you do get through, be sure to ask about retroactive payments for all the weeks you've been claiming.

•Thank you for explaining! I've been trying to call EVERY SINGLE DAY for the past 3 weeks but can never get through... it's either busy signals or the automated system just hangs up on me after saying all agents are busy. How are people actually getting through to a real person???

•The call volume is still extremely high, especially in the mornings. Try calling between 3-4pm on Wednesdays or Thursdays when it's typically less busy. Be sure to have your claim ID and all relevant documentation ready. Persistence is key - sometimes it takes 15-20 attempts to connect with an agent.

HAHAHA welcome to the wonderful world of NY unemployment!! 🙃 I waited TEN WEEKS last year with ZERO communication from them. Called literally 47 times (yes I counted) and could never get through. My claim was "pending" the whole time with no explanation. It's CRIMINAL how they treat people who are already struggling!

•It really does feel criminal! How are we supposed to survive while they take their sweet time? Did yours eventually get approved or did you have to do something special?

•Mine finally got approved after I reached out to my state assembly person. But even that took 2 more weeks. The system is DESIGNED to wear you down so you'll give up. DON'T GIVE UP!

just got a job bro, unemployment is for losers anyway

•Wow, super helpful comment. 🙄 Maybe consider that people on unemployment PAID INTO THE SYSTEM while they were working and are ENTITLED to those benefits when needed. Not everyone can just "get a job" instantly.

After fighting with the system for weeks, I finally got through to an agent using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have this service that basically calls DOL for you and connects you with an agent. Totally worth it because the agent fixed my claim status during the call and my payments started processing the next day. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE My issue was actually a simple verification flag that an agent resolved in like 5 minutes once I actually got to talk to someone. The insane part is I'd been waiting 7 weeks for something that took 5 minutes to fix!

•Thanks for sharing this! I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. Did they say what was causing your claim to be held up? Was it something you could have fixed earlier if you'd known?

•In my case, there was a discrepancy between my last employer's report and what I entered on my application. The difference was literally ONE DAY in my employment end date! The agent overrode it immediately once I explained. Without talking to someone, it would have just sat there indefinitely. Definitely worth getting through to a human.

my cousin works at the unemployment office (not in ny tho) and she says they're still super backed up from system upgrades they did in january. she said sometimes claims get stuck in "processing" when there's nothing actually wrong with them, just a computer glitch

•This is correct. The January 2025 system upgrade caused significant backlog issues that are still being resolved. However, claims stuck this long typically need manual intervention - the system rarely resolves these on its own after 6+ weeks.

I'm a career counselor, and I've been helping multiple clients with similar issues. Here's what works most consistently: 1. Call at exactly 7:58am (2 mins before they open) and stay on the line 2. If that fails, try the alternate number ending in 1560 instead of the main line 3. Send a secure message through your online account specifically asking for a status update (use those exact words) 4. Document every attempt to contact them - dates, times, reference numbers In most cases, your benefits will be backdated to when you first became eligible, so you won't lose any money. It's the waiting that's so difficult.

•Thank you for these specific tips! I've been trying the main number but haven't tried the alternate one. Is the 1560 number listed on their website somewhere? I'll try calling right when they open tomorrow morning too.

I had a similar situation happen to me last month! So frustrating just waiting and waiting with no income coming in. Have you checked if your identity verification went through? Sometimes that's what holds things up and there's no clear notification about it.

•I don't remember getting any identity verification request, but honestly I might have missed it. Is there somewhere specific in my account I should check for that? The dashboard just shows "in process" with no other details or action items.

A significant development: The NY Department of Labor just announced yesterday that claims initiated between March-April 2025 may experience extended processing times due to a security review they're conducting. They're promising to clear the backlog by June 15th. This might explain your situation, though it doesn't make the wait any easier.

•Wow, thank you for sharing this update! I hadn't seen any announcement. At least now I know it might not be something wrong with my specific claim. June 15th is still weeks away though... ugh. I appreciate you sharing this information.

I finally got through after 13 weeks of waiting! My issue was that I had worked in another state briefly in 2024 and that was causing some verification issues with my NY claim. Even though I only had one job in 2025 like you, my previous out-of-state work was messing things up. Maybe check if something similar is happening with your claim?

•I've only worked in NY, so I don't think that's my issue. But it's good to know that these random things can cause delays! How did you finally get it resolved? Did you have to speak with someone?

•Yes, I finally got through to someone on the phone who fixed it immediately. That's the frustrating part - once you actually speak to a person, they can often resolve it in minutes. The problem is getting through to that person!
