Will unpaid car accident debt seize my federal tax refund? Need answers ASAP

I got into a car accident and owe a lot of money. Someone mentioned they might take my federal tax refund. Is this true? I heard they can only garnish state refunds but I need to know for sure before I file.

Tax expert here. Private debts like car accidents cannot directly take your federal refund. Only federal debts (student loans, back taxes, child support) or state debts can be collected through the Treasury Offset Program. If the accident debt went to court and became a judgment, they could potentially garnish wages but not your federal refund.

Even with a lawsuit, they still cant touch federal refunds. Only state and federal agencies have that power.

Was it actually a private debt tho? Might have been something else getting offset 🤔
