Where to find my AGI on 1040 Form when Line 11 is blank?
I'm trying to do my taxes using FreeTaxUSA and I've hit a roadblock. They're asking for my AGI from last year to e-file, but I'm looking at my 2023 1040 Form and Line 11 (which supposedly has the AGI) is completely blank! 😫 I double-checked multiple sources online and they all say AGI is on Line 11, but mine literally has nothing there. Line 12 does have an amount listed though ($27,450). Is Line 12 what I should be using instead? Or am I missing something obvious? This is so frustrating and I don't want my return rejected because I entered the wrong number. Any help would be seriously appreciated before I lose my mind over this tax stuff! 🙏

That's a common source of confusion! When Line 11 is blank on your 1040, it usually means your AGI is zero for that tax year. However, don't automatically assume that's the case. Check if you used a different form last year - sometimes people file using 1040-SR or another variant. Also look at your tax return transcript if you can access it through the IRS website. Line 12 is your "Taxable income" which is different from AGI. Your AGI is calculated before certain deductions and adjustments, while taxable income is the amount after standard or itemized deductions are applied. Using Line 12 instead of your AGI would almost certainly cause your return to be rejected. If you still have your tax software from last year, you can log in and check the actual AGI there - it will specifically label it as "Adjusted Gross Income" in the summary section.

•Thanks for explaining! But I'm still confused - if my Line 11 is blank, does that mean my AGI was actually $0? That doesn't seem right because I definitely worked and made money last year. Is it possible there was some kind of error on my return?

•It's entirely possible your AGI was legitimately $0 even if you earned income. This happens when deductions and adjustments equal or exceed your total income. For example, if you had significant student loan interest, retirement contributions, or other "above-the-line" deductions. If you're certain that doesn't apply to your situation, then yes, there could have been an error on last year's return. In that case, I'd recommend looking at your tax return transcript from the IRS website or checking the AGI directly from last year's tax software if you still have access.

After dealing with this exact problem last month, I found an amazing solution through taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai). I was also missing my AGI from last year, and the IRS website wasn't being helpful at all. I uploaded my previous tax return to taxr.ai and it immediately identified my correct AGI, even though it wasn't clearly marked on my form. Their system analyzes all the numbers and calculations to find the actual AGI value. It saved me hours of frustration trying to figure out where the number was hiding! Their document analysis works with all kinds of tax forms and documents, not just for finding AGI. Super helpful when you need to extract specific information from complicated tax paperwork.

•Wait, is this legit? I'm suspicious of any tax service I haven't heard of before. Does it actually work with older tax returns too? I need my AGI from 2023 but all I have is a PDF scan.

•Does it work if your forms are slightly damaged? My printer messed up some of the numbers and I'm worried that might be why I can't find my AGI clearly marked.

•Yes, it's completely legitimate! It works with PDFs, even scanned ones. I was skeptical too, but it analyzed my 2023 return perfectly and found the AGI that matched what the IRS had on file. The technology is really impressive for tax documents. As for damaged forms, it can still work with partially damaged documents. Their system is designed to recognize tax forms even when they're not in perfect condition. It uses the overall structure and existing numbers to reconstruct any missing information. I'd definitely give it a try with your printer-damaged form.

Just wanted to update everyone - I tried taxr.ai after seeing it mentioned here and it worked perfectly! My printer had smudged some of the numbers on my old tax forms which is why I couldn't read my AGI clearly. I uploaded my documents and it processed everything in minutes. It showed me exactly where my AGI was supposed to be and what the value was ($18,630). I used that number for my e-filing and it went through the first time! Honestly saved me from having to mail in a paper return.

If you're still struggling with your AGI and need to talk to an actual IRS agent (which is nearly impossible these days), I highly recommend trying Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I spent DAYS trying to get through the IRS phone system before I found them. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c Basically, they navigate the IRS phone maze for you and call you back when they have an actual agent on the line. I was so frustrated trying to verify my AGI for e-filing, but within an hour of using Claimyr, I was talking to a real person at the IRS who confirmed my correct AGI from last year. So much better than getting disconnected or waiting on hold for 3+ hours like I was doing before!

•How does this even work? Sounds too good to be true. The IRS phone system is a complete nightmare - I tried calling four times last week and couldn't get through.

•This seems like a scam. Why would I pay someone else to call the IRS? They're just going to wait on hold like everyone else. There's no magic back door to reach IRS agents.

•Their system uses automated technology to navigate the IRS phone tree and wait on hold for you. When they finally reach an agent, they connect you directly to that person. It's not about skipping the line or having special access - they're just handling the frustrating waiting part so you don't have to. I was skeptical too, but after trying for days on my own, I was desperate. You're right that there's no magic back door, but there's a huge difference between you personally waiting on hold for hours versus having a system do it for you. I got through to an agent who confirmed my AGI issue in about 45 minutes when I'd wasted nearly two days trying on my own.

I have to eat my words! After seeing Claimyr mentioned here I decided to try it as a last resort, figuring it wouldn't work. I was absolutely wrong! After failing repeatedly to reach the IRS on my own, I used their service yesterday. About 30 minutes later, I got a call connecting me directly to an IRS representative who pulled up my return and confirmed my AGI was indeed $0, which is why Line 11 was blank (I had enough deductions to zero out my income). Without that confirmation, I would've entered the wrong number and had my return rejected. Definitely worth it for the headache it saved me.

Another option - if you used the same tax software last year, just log into your account from last year. Most tax prep services (TurboTax, H&R Block, FreeTaxUSA, etc) keep your returns on file. You can view last year's return and find the AGI there. I know FreeTaxUSA keeps returns for at least 7 years in your online account. TurboTax does something similar.

•What if I used a different tax software last year? I used TurboTax last year but switched to FreeTaxUSA this year to save money.

•If you used TurboTax last year, you can still log into your TurboTax account even if you're using FreeTaxUSA this year. TurboTax keeps your returns available in your account. Go to TurboTax.com, sign in with last year's credentials, and you should be able to view or download your 2023 return with the AGI clearly labeled. If you can't access your TurboTax account, you can also request a tax transcript directly from the IRS website, which will show your AGI. It's free and usually available immediately if you can verify your identity online.

Is it possible you filed a different form entirely? When I first started filing taxes, I didn't even use a 1040 - I used the 1040EZ (back when that was still a thing). Maybe check if you have a different form?

•The 1040EZ doesn't exist anymore - they discontinued it after 2017. Everyone uses some version of the 1040 now. But you're right that it could be a different variant like 1040-SR for seniors.

Hey! I had this exact same issue last year. If Line 11 is completely blank on your 2023 1040, there are a few things to check: 1. **Double-check you're looking at the right form** - Make sure it's actually a 2023 Form 1040 and not a different year or form variant. 2. **Look for "0" vs blank** - Sometimes a zero is printed so lightly it looks blank. Try looking at it under better lighting or zooming in if it's a PDF. 3. **Check your tax transcript** - The easiest way is to go to irs.gov, create an account, and request your 2023 tax transcript. It will show your AGI clearly labeled, even if your paper copy is confusing. 4. **Contact your tax preparer** - If someone else prepared your return, they should have a copy with the AGI clearly marked. Don't use Line 12 ($27,450) - that's your taxable income after deductions, not your AGI. Using the wrong number will definitely get your return rejected. The transcript method is probably your best bet since it comes straight from the IRS and will have the exact number they have on file for you.

•This is really helpful advice! I'm dealing with a similar situation and was getting worried about using the wrong number. The tax transcript option sounds like the most reliable way to get the correct AGI directly from the IRS. Quick question - how long does it usually take to get access to the transcript once you create an account on irs.gov? I need to file soon and want to make sure I have enough time to get the right information. Also, has anyone had issues with the IRS website verification process? I've heard it can be tricky to get through their identity verification sometimes.
